I had a 706mkiig for about 6 years, then a bolt of lightning sent it to the radio grave.  It was a great radio and easy to use.  There are some things I really miss about it, and other I don't.  I replaced it with a Yaesu 897.

Congratulations on purchasing a great radio.
The 706 is a benchmark standard and a great radio.  I have the 706 mark 2.....no g....mine is older and does not have the 70 cm band.  I use my 706 for all my HF needs.  I am into the digital modes these days and use HRD with it.  I highly recommend HRD as it will allow you to use the radio from your pc, saving the knobs and switches. It also comes with DM 780 which is a full complement of digital modes, and it is free.  Go here, http://www.ham-radio-deluxe.com/.  I will say getting the 706 to work with HRD is tricky, but it can be done.
Good Luck,
