Looking at your amended post, I should also add that though it is wrong, this generally has been a game played by the left.
But in either case, it should be punished to the full extent of the law.
When was it played by the left ?
I seem to recall numerous cases of the right doing that.
on here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Rove you can find the following on Karl Rove:
In 1986, just before a crucial debate in campaign, Rove claimed that his office had been bugged by Democrats. The police and FBI investigated and discovered that the bug's battery was so small that it needed to be changed every few hours, and the investigation was dropped.[27] Critics, including other Republican operatives, suspected Rove had bugged his own office to garner sympathy votes in the close governor's race.[28]

Bush republicans leafleted cars just hours before a primary in the Carolinas in 2000 claiming that MCains adopted child was an illegitimate child of his own, a charge that was baseless, though may have influenced that race.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080128/banks Most all of the major assassinations in the US JFK, RFK, MLK where all of democrats.
Senators who received weapons grade Anthrax that came from a US army lab where all democratic congressmen who opposed the patriot act.
Then there's election fraud in 2000 and 2004, diebold voting machine company that is run by former computer criminals connected to republicans.

There have been numerous articles and problems exposed with these voting machines by computer scientists and others.
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0511-11.htm The recent Acorn thing is actually a scam because although a few voters where possibly registered falsely, actual cases of people showing up at poles to vote under false identity is practically unheard of and would be a foolish thing to try and an election could not conceivably be altered in such a manner as it would not work. Republicans are trying hard to purge voter lists and other such tactics.
Then there was Watergate .. I'm sure the democrats have done some dastardly things, but none of them I can think of at the moment ..
Having said all that, you might think maybe I support the far left, I consider myself a moderate centrist however.
