Carl passed away on March 11, 2019. As most know, he was fighting a long and painful battle with cancer. He was in a hospice facility and incoherent for more than two weeks.

On a personal note...

I got to know Carl fairly well. While he was of modest means, he was incredibly generous with what he did have. A great deal of my amateur radio knowledge and skill can be directly attributed to him. I'm glad his suffering is over and I hope to honor him by "paying it forward", as he'd say.

Thank you for letting us know. he has been in my prayers for the last number of months, since the last time he posted. He was a wealth of information and always cheerful. I have no doubt he is resting in peace - the peace he KNEW was waiting for him.

Hi TSP friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this post. However, I was given permission by his son, David to do so. Carl lost his battle with Cancer and passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019! Out of respect for his family, I held off posting here or anywhere.

Carl was not only my Elmer in real life, but he was a very close personal friend! He had a wide range of knowledge! He was close to a master in every one of his vast areas of expertise! Which is why I know he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone and we all enjoyed it!!

He thoroughly enjoyed helping out and learning on TSP with y'all! He introduced me to the site a few years ago! Like most of you, I appreciated and respected his opinions! He will be missed!

Carl David McNair, 61, of Bossier City, LA, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 in Minden, LA after a long struggle with cancer.

Carl was born on April 6, 1957 in San Antonio, TX, the second son of Ernest and Tillie (Willborn) McNair. Carl graduated from Airline High School in 1975 and married Evelyn Buchanan a year later. They had one son, David.

Carl was a man of many passions; photography, gunsmithing, and amateur radio. Known widely through the local HAM community, Carl (KB5WMY) was a regular attendee at local hamfests. During Hurricane Katrina, he volunteered at the Bossier Parish 911 center and successfully coordinated dozens of rescues. The US Coast Guard presented him with an award for saving lives in the aftermath of the hurricane. Carl is survived by his son David (& Kelly) McNair; grandchildren, Jonathan, Bryan and Andrew McNair; parents, Ernest and Tillie McNair; and siblings, Gene McNair and Jessica McNair. The family would like to give special thanks to Glenna Monday, who has provided many years of companionship, and to Don Cota, who has stayed by Carl’s side much of these last few weeks. Thanks also to the doctors and staff of Meadowview Health and Rehab Center and LSU Medical Center for providing Carl with the best possible care.

Sorry to be late but I had no internet access for 10 days.

I wouldn't throw out the term "pillar of our community" lightly but with Carl it fits. I got to a point where I would purchase his recommendations without even thinking. If he liked a battery, flashlight, knife, cartridge, etc. it meant it worked. Bear in mind I don't do his real field of expertise: HAM. I don't know how one gets so much expertise in so many fields.

I regret not being able to meet but I am happy that he lives on with those of us who were able to learn so much. He'll be missed.

David, it's good to hear from you. I wish you and yours the best in a hard time.
