Interesting article covering a huge CME (Coronal Mass Ejection,) including an informative video from NASA.

Thinking about the Carrington Event and the 1889 storm, and the damage the latter did to our infant electronics infrastructure, made me reevaluate some of my threat assessment.

The good news is that we have more resources watching the sun than a lone English gentleman, and would have tens of hours of warning to power things down.

The question is however, do we have the plans in place to do this in an orderly fashion?  And do we have backup systems for hospitals, nuclear plant cooling pumps, etc. ready to go?

It's something to ponder late at night.
