*Sigh* is there any current songwriters/singers with current themes on these topics? Last ones I knew were Pink with "Dear Mr President" and "Dixie Chicks"... but the Pink song was 2005? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_Mr._President

You want current protest-y songs? I got current protest-y songs!
0. *THE* current protest song is I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore by Rise Against. Just released this year, topping billboards, showcases today's punk crowd's mindset, EXACTLY what you're looking for Cedar.
It's a pretty subtle message but it's pretty much about being fed up with the current bullshit system, "Your paradise is something I've endured," in reference to the fake American dream we've been sold. The music video is a lot less subtle and with a different message, covering ALL of the problems in the world, focusing on violence, and then equating guns to violence and being complete crap in that regard.
1. Satellite by Rise Against
Awesome song that's basically an anarcho-libertarian's theme. Also one of my old old favorite running songs.
2. Survivor's Guilt by Rise Against
Addresses the emotional trauma experienced by soldiers and how shitty the government treats them.
3. Listen to Rise Against!
4. Revolution by Nickelback.
Kinda cheesy. Nickelback sucks. But it's there and it's a thing.
5. Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell by Five Finger Death Punch
A bit more of a subtle message, again about veterans. They played this song for a Veteran's Day concert somewhere just recently.
6. Where Is the Love by The Black Eyes Peas? It's a pretty old song now but it's awesome and I figured I'd throw in something without screamed lyrics.
7. Bridges by Rise Against (y'all might be able to guess my favorite band by now)
Talks about the erosion of the middle class. Just released this year, how's that for current?
8. The Pride by Five Finger Death Punch
Basically a huge f*** you to American consumerism.
9. Another Way to Die by Disturbed
Talks about how we're destroying the planet and ourselves in the process. Freakin classic.
10. Land of Confusion by Disturbed
Another freakin classic. If you're not turned off by heavy metal listen to this song!
11: Here's a curveball. Diamonds from Sierra Leone by Kanye West!
It amazes me but Kanye of all people has a meaningful song. It's about the destruction the blood diamond industry causes and the responsibility people like him have in it.
12. Same Love by Macklemore
In support of gay marriage.
13. White Flag Warrior by The Flobots
Pretty much anti-war.
14. Rage Against the Machine
They're pretty old but they're still current. They're all protest songs basically.
15. Definitely old but The Hand That Feeds by Nine Inch Nails plays on the radio all the time. The protest spirit is alive and well among us rockers!
16. All I Want by A Day to Remember
Not EXACTLY a protest song, but it more provides a snapshot of how a lot of us feel about the state of the world. And it's just a good song.
Really Cedar if you can't find current protest songs either you're not looking hard enough or you don't listen to enough new metal, lol!
Now on the topic of theme songs. My theme song at this exact moment in time tonight is Forever by Papa Roach, and Thin Line by Macklemore. Because I'm a heartbroken sentimental 20 year old at the moment.
Normally my theme music is more like Savior by Rise Against to get me PUMPED or Miracle by Blackmill (give Blackmill a listen!!) to put me in a freakin awesome mood.
