Can gps be used to track you?
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:50:29 AM »
Forgive me if the question is a bit out there, but I've wondered for a while if it is best to buy a vehicle devoid of any navigational aids as they actively track and show your position.

I know it's a bit far-fetched but I question if your vehicle gps will be used against you in a bug out scenario. Any thoughts?

GPS units don't transmit any data.

However, a GPS-enabled transponder could be placed in your car -- and could broadcast your coordinates.

I think OnStar tracks you. I am pretty sure that is supposed to be one of the features. Like if it gets stolen you can track it down.

Lojack transmits.

New cars will start being tracked if they pass the mileage based carbon footprint tax.

Ugh.

Yes, it does. Or if you get in an accident, breakdown, etc., it knows where you are.

Mark is right.  If the car in an accident, OnStar will relay the position of the vehicle automatically.  If the car is reported stolen, the OnStar people can find it.  It can even be setup to transmit the location if the car moves when it isn't supposed too, such as while you are at work and the car is supposed to be in the parking lot.

Of course, all of this is a two edged sword.  Remember, the government now owns the company that provides this service.  That's why we call it Government Motors.

The state of Oregon is wanting to put GPS on all cars so they can tax you by the miles you drive.
