New canning flats deals/buys?

Came across this ad this morning. I don't think the price will get much if any better on new pint jars. Up $2 over last two years.

I haven't been to the amish stores in a while, but I'd say for retail, they are still the best price. $20.00 for 120 lids in bulk.

Red found a sale at Menards + a rebate.


I have enough lids for several years, but feel like I need to keep a good supply.

I peeked on Amazon today. Case of regular mouth flats $191.00 (432 lids).

I have not bought flats for years - I use the Tattler for everything but bacon.  Are they going up in price then?  Just curious for the sake of information.

I am going to look next time I am at the store.  I need to pick up a few boxes of pint jars anyway.  Amazon has 8 boxes (a dozen in a box) for $44 - $6/box

Sorry to be late seeing this, I am not happy wiht the performance of orchard road lids compared to regular ball lids.  First, the orchard road does not have a "belly button" slight bump in the middle, which means I have seen them almost fold and hten right themselves upon cooling 9 that may have been pressure canning ) also, some jars of carrot habanero butter ( so, vinegar, lime juice, habanero ingredients, water bath canned) has upon opening shown degradation where the sealant edge is, so much that the sealant ( what is the correct name for that ? ) is rippled and pulled away from the metal, and the metal there shows some discoloration.  The seal stayed just fine.  I ate the condiment.  But, I will no longer use them for any pickled product or use them for pressure canning, I will use them up for jams and tomatoes and I do not buy any more

I did just bought some packages of the Walmart brand last month, and I will try those out.  There is no walmart in this county, but I am in locations that have one a few times a year, so if they work out, I can stock up.  I think they were around .10/lid. plus our insane almost 10% sales tax -- in my opinion, canning jars and lids should be exempt, like food and seeds as they are for food, but..... it is what it is

I haven't tried the Orchard Road lids, still have 36 dozen Ball/Kerr lids I bought from Menard's a couple years ago. Don't remember the price but even paying shipping it was better than Walmart and I can get those locally. That was the break even, save a little quantity. I think I saved around $8.50.

I've had a few Orchard Roads, came with the jars. Don't remember any problems MM. 5-6? cases of regular mouth.

On those Mainstays (Walmart lids) we had a canner load that 4 of 7? lids I think buckled under pressure (I may still have the pics). They stayed buckled, but did not unseal.
I won't buy any more of those. They were less than 2 dollars I think. Made in China, as is all Mainstay products from Walmart.

The buckling did straighten out as they cooled

SO, basically, between the 30 or more boxes of orchard road and the dozen of Mainstay, I have no good lids, but I guess I will just have to use these up and hope for better next year

I've noticed that when they are boiled the seal areas return to unused looking. I know reuse is not recommended but I have boiled and reused a few for water bath canning. No failures that I recall. I haven't used any previously used lids for pressure canning.

I've re-used a lot of lids that look in good shape for water bath canning with good success. I'm happily making jam again now that we are settled... so far lots of strawberry, some raspberry and blueberry, and most recently, peach jam. I made all these batches with no pectin and have been very pleased with the consistency. If you like a more firm and solid jelly or jam, this wouldn't be for you, but I have to say they are all pretty fantastic stirred into my homemade Greek yogurt.

No Amish stores in the state.   When I went to Walmart, it had very, very little in the canning area, it is a small area in that location, but people had being buying it out was obvious.  I was lucky to get the regular mouth mainstay lids and a couple canning jar flats, and not the larger ones I was looking for, but I should have plenty of jars. I very rarely am traveling in an area that has a Walmart, maybe once or twice a year

The big grocery store in town had a dz wide for $3.79 and the regular were $2.69.

no quart jars of either size, only pint (both wide and reg) and half-pints.

They only had Ball.

We save most all used lids. The good ones we put on jelly jars and also use them to vacuum pack mason's with.
We've never reused any for canning, but have had an oopsie a couple times and got a used one that was marked in the canner. They sealed so......

After we empty and wash jars in the house, I put used lids with rings on them to keep them clean inside. We still rewash when canning though.
Then they all get sorted and boxed and put away.
Sometimes I'll store a dozen jars a week that we've emptied.

Yes I save all lids unless badly bent when opening a jar. I also put used washed lids and rings on washed jars for storing. Also I hate washing jars especially quarts but it's necessary and we don't have a working dishwasher. Main reason to get another but it's just two of us. Hand wash 15 minutes max.

thus far, I have used small hands to get mine clean.  Unfortunately, my little hands have been growing, and now only one child has hands small enough to reach inside a reg mouth jar 
I have found that a dishrag with a dish brush works pretty well.
