Thank You DeltaEchoVictor!! And now I'll add a survival series I don't see on the list: William Johnstone's "Ashes" series...the first one is "Out of the Ashes" this series is hard core conservative, very military and quite tongue-in-cheek at times. I loved his phrase "hanky-stomping liberals". His hero Ben Raines pulls no punches, gives no quarter, takes no hostages, follows Marine rules, is beloved by his "troops" and despised by his enemies.
<chuckle> Too bad the author went a bit over the deep end.
First, he started making references to the fact that he was the real-life Ben Raines. Then, he starts writing the book with Ben Raines' background as his own.
For those who don't know about this series. The main character is a guy who wrote post-apocalyptic fiction before the war started. He presented in those books (the fictional character, that is) a concept called the Tri-States Philosophy.
Without the character's knowledge, his fans started preparing for an eventual nuclear war and, when it happened, they searched the nuclear-ravaged country looking for the author and begged him to lead them.
Lead them, he does, as a "benevolent" dictator. They go into three states (Hence the phrase "Tri-States"), kicks the people who do live there out. They force everyone who wants to live with them to undergo electronic- and drug-induced testing (the ones who don't pass their requirements just don't wake up) and they take on the United States Government.
Yeah, so what?
Well, what a lot of people don't know or remember is that in the couple of years building up to Y2K, Johnstone started believing his own hype. Several groups, just like in his books, contacted him and begged him to lead them post-Y2K to actually create the Tri-States (no, I'm not joking. . .I wish I were).
They somehow believed that Johnstone was just like Ben Raines. . .after all, didn't Johnstone write a book where he, the author, interviewed himself, the character of Ben Raines? (answer: Yes, he did.)
Luckily, Y2K never came about and, as with most fads, the Tri-States Alliance, the Tri-States Coalition, et al, withered away from lack of interest and guidance.
Interesting books, though.
