Thanks for all the book suggestions guys (although my wife wouldn't agree)!

I just finished Alas Babylon. It is not a really detailed account of survival after nuclear war but leaves you what to think about - don't forget to stock up on salt!

I have also been reading Lights Out - this one is lots of fun!

I just started the postman and can't wait to get through some more.

No one has mentioned "World Made by hand"? Great book, good for introducing the genteler side of survivalism.
Also My take on the road is only read if you can withstand the amount of depression it instills in you. Gawd I felt aweful almost the entire time I read it. So sad, but things are going to be like that in the end for some people.

I read the first half of the book the day I got it. That night I put my 3 yo son in bed with me and kept reaching over to amke sure he was breathing. This is a great book, but yes extremly depressing.

First a request to the Monitors: An off Post sub-directory form of Listing of Survival Books for reference, please.... might also be good for other things, a listing attached to a forum post... like recipes, URLs, ammo, etc... things that get re-posted often because they get lost in the depths of a thread and are hard to find.
OK... here are some books I've read that are great Survival reads....
C. Palmer's "Emergence" it's about survival after a world wide genetic plague, so is Frank Herbert's "White Plague" (think it's F Herbert)
Edgar Pangborn's "Davy" which is about some 1000 years after nuclear war
many of Andre Norton's books are about post nuclear war... "Starman's Son/Daybreak2250" for one...,
And the wonderful Roger Finlay "Wonder Island Boys" 'bout a couple of boys and an old professor cast away on an island. Some great "how-to" stuff in these books!

And now I'll add a survival series I don't see on the list: William Johnstone's "Ashes" series...the first one is "Out of the Ashes" this series is hard core conservative, very military and quite tongue-in-cheek at times. I loved his phrase "hanky-stomping liberals". His hero Ben Raines pulls no punches, gives no quarter, takes no hostages, follows Marine rules, is beloved by his "troops" and despised by his enemies.

Read "Patriots" over Christmas and it was the first book I've read with the newly developing preparedness mindset. So it will always have a special place in my heart.

I really enjoyed it. My in laws were in town at the time so I had to fight with my father in law to get my hands on it to read because he picked it up and could not put it down. They left to go back home before he finished so we order him a copy to finish when he got home.

Just finished The Long Emergency and World Made by Hand, back to back. The Long Emergency is an analysis of the upcoming economic crisis, touches on the effects of peak oil on America and the world, and goes into detail on how no form of energy (wind, hydrogen, etc.) will ever be as abundant/efficient as fossil fuel. A must read for anyone wanting insights on the potential effects of the apocalyptic 'perfect storm': peak oil, global warming, population explosion, etc. Kunstler's 'The Geography of Nowhere' is also a good read - an analysis of how the concept of suburbia was a waste of resources (being built on the assumption that most everyone is driving a car), knowing that we won't have any oil someday to get people from suburbia to work.

World Made by Hand is a novel, in contrast to the two I mentioned above. It's a story about life in a post-collapse small town, and what people to to get by. It's not a 'shoot-em-up' read like The Stand, and doesn't take place in a wasteland like The Road, but provides some interesting insights into the 'good vs. evil' and social interactions that would likely be evident in a post-collapse society, to include the lack of knowledge of what's going on in the outside world. It's a pretty good read if you're already into the genre. Kunstler is now working on the sequel to the novel (per his podcast) that will be released later this year.

The entire series was Ghost written. A guy named Vic Milian wrote the first 12 or so, and then a handful of authors took it out to somewhere around 20. There never really was a real Richard Austin.

Ah, my bad. . .I thought that Richard Austin was the pen name for Vic Milian (who also recently wrote a couple of books in the Deathlands series).

I did like his writing style. I really was unhappy with the other ghost writers' styles.

Too bad Vic (assuming he's still alive) isn't writing more PA fiction.

This has very detailed instructions on living off the grid; water, electric, food storage, etc. Ex-military guy.

Forgive me if these two books have been mentioned. Also forgive me for not knowing the titles or author of these two books. Maybe somebody will know the books.

1. This book is about a Teenager who joins a fishing boat to help earn extra money for his family. The boat strikes an iceberg and sinks. The boy was able to jump from the ship to the iceberg and survive on the iceberg for many years. I read this book as a kid and loved it.

2. These scientist live in this Biosphere and during their stay a Disease hits earth and 99.9% of the population dies. One scientist decides to leave to find his family to see if anybody is alive. Of course he lives being one of the few people immune to the disease. Okay book.

Let me know if you guys find out the name. I have been trying to find it forever.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I read the Postman on my days off, I liked it so much better than the movie.

I'm back to work now and don't have a lot of time to read so I checked out the audio book of The Road at the Library. I have listened to it on and off for the last 4 days. It is very good. I'll have to see if there are any other audio books in the Library that you guys suggest. Seems to make my shift pass by when we aren't that busy.

My 10 year old grandson read "City of Ember" and gave it to me to read. It is a kids book, but as a 65 year old man, I still enjoyed it.

If you have read Lights Out, the internet book, then you probably should also read the actual predictions about that happening soon by Richard C. Duncan. in his "Olduavai Theory. He believes that the US electric grid will fail from lack of energy to maintain it, the industrial age will be over, and the lights really will be permanently out.

Hi guys...brand new prepper here. If you haven't read "One Second After" by William Fortschen then I highly recommend it. Not hardcore survivalism but well written and an engaging plot about a massive EMP strike ending all electricity, new cars, etc and just how quickly society breaks down. If you troll Amazon often you will see a book called "The Collapse"....skip it. Worst $30 I ever spent.
On a related note on the BBC there is a series called "Survivors 2008" and it is a kinda melodramatic post-flu apocalyptic series set in the UK. Not much gun play (for obvious reasons) but it has a way of drawing you into the characters. You won't learn anything but it will kill 6 hours. I think you can watch it online at BBCs website.

I just finished reading ONE SECOND AFTER. It's a well written engaging book I think most here would enjoy. Not a survival manual like "Patriots" by any means but a good read. Very similar kind of story as "Alas, Babylon" was - P.A.W in a small town. Highly recommended.
