Finding other preppers
« on: June 03, 2014, 05:30:19 AM »
I have been thinking of trying to find other people who are like minded to share skills and other ideas with in my area, any suggestions on how to do this without sounding like I wear a tinfoil hat?

I live in N.E Ohio near Youngstown.

Thanks
Tim

p.s. sorry if this is wrong place.

As a general question, I'll leave this here.

If your looking specifically for people in your area, you should try the Regional Boards.

Look for classes or workshops in your area that promote "prepping skills", like, butchering, cooking over a fire, etc.  You can check the bulletin board at your local feed store.  If you have an organic store in your area, you can see if they have any workshops on "homesteading" skills.  I have found most of my contacts through "homesteading" as opposed as using the label of prepper.

I suspect we found one at Dairy Queen the other day. If I had chosen to talk to them longer and said a few more things of what we do, I bet I would have gotten a confirmation.

I have found most of my contacts through "homesteading" as opposed as using the label of prepper.

That would not be unusual I think...

not easy in the UK where most people are sheeple and preppers are looked on as a bit weird.

Here are some Facebook pages to consider.

DISCLAIMER!!!These groups are NOT necessarily endorsed by TSP!

I avoided listing any "gun" FB pages. I limited my searches exclusively to search terms such as "prepping" and "survival" and "homesteading" and "food storage." If you want to find a gun-focused group, you're on your own.

I found at least 2 of them at my EMR course I am taking. I bet if you take a HAM class, you will find a few.

indeed, I know of a few. there are about 4 other preppers I would (almost) trust in an emergency but the trouble is we are spread out over all of the UK and the nearest is 100 miles away from me and the furthest is up in Northumberland/Scottish border.

I have a like minded friend in that 100-200 mile bracket. We both gain as we both have a fallback position if something happens near us and our BOL is also down.

I have a prepper friend I regularly meet to have "brain storming sessions"-his description not mine, but he lives on the Devon/Somerset border within a few miles of 40,000+ population, so not somewhere I want to go post SHTF(the population of my PARISH is 1,300).

What if your parish floods from massive rains? And his doesn't? Or Avian flu comes through your area? Or something which doesn't affect those areas the other three live in, but does effect yours. And if neither of you think your area will be hit, and you think they are BO to your place, then he needs to come down or you need to Skype/private irc alot to 'brainstorm'.

flooding is not an option, this is hill country and we live on the highest point around. Avian flu/swine flu/Ebola/ we're going into total isolation. he's the nearest and he's still 100 miles away, the others are 600 miles away-too far to do anything and they all have their own BO plans anyway.

I've found several "like-minded" folks at estate/farm auctions.  Just keep your ears open and you'll find that it's pretty easy to discover who is looking to actively use the items in their preps vs those only looking for shabby chic decor.  Then while standing around waiting for that certain homesteading/prepping type item to come up for bid, just start up a "safe" topic of conversation of a fellow bidder whom you suspect might be, although make sure the topic is one that "could" just as easily relate to prepping as not, just to feel them out. In most cases, you'll find out pretty quick those of the prepper mindset.  Sometimes you can end up with livelong friends this way, though it can take a while as one can never be too cautious.
