Ill take it apart and test voltage input and output maybe see and fix something that is obviously broke.

Also, I don't think it's the battery because I have 2, I could put either in the cradle and not get a green light.

Actually The -5R cradle has an input of 12VDC...Check the wall socket/converter specs.

well this is one interesting option...next to the GT-3 and at the same price.
The wining factor will be accessories compatibility.

Tomorrow I will loaning my -5R...I would NOt do this for my Kenwwod. replacing a 30dollar radio is so easy!

yes but it makes no sense doing any test without knowing the proper waterproofness ratings.
Skiping at 13:30 one will find the explanation.
in example the GT-3 is IP55 rated.
which means
(5) Dust protected
(5) Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
Water immersion rating is scale 7 and more

Not that I'd trust my life to a Baofeng, but if push came to shove I'd rather have one running in stealth mode.

So I have a UV-5R that doesn't transmit voice. When I hit the PTT it breaks squelch in simplex and ker-chunks the repeater in that mode, but my voice is not being transmitted. I am fiddling with the setting to see if I somehow muted the internal mic.

Anyone else have a similar issue? I am still in business since I have three of the things.

Often the 'disconnect' on the mic plug failure can do this,have you tried an external mic?

It's not the radio I'd want for an ARES deployment during a hurricane, but I'm think that it would be a fine radio for a car or keep at work BOB where I'm at. We've got lots of repeaters that can allow for a lot of situational awareness in a pinch if something should happen, and I could always grab my Yaesu HT from home or other radios should the need arise for more serious, long term work.

Carl's probably called it on this one, but I've also heard of the case hole over the mic not being punched out. Never actually seen it, but it is easy to check.

UV5R is a pretty tough bargain.

I had ordered a uv5r off Amazon that had this problem. Speaker mic plugged into jack worked. I could TX DTMF tones, kerchunk repeaters, but no audio from the built in mic.

I didn't bother to repair myself as I exchanged it for no cost.

There is a New kid on the block. There is another hand held on the market that some are calling the “Baofeng Killer.” The Quansheng UVr50 2-way transceiver similar to the Baofeng UV-5R. I don’t know if it can be programmed to MURS or FRS like the BF, but it does Have 2-M and 70-cm frequencies. The reviews on YouTube say that it functions better on xmit and receive. The catch, it is cheaper. It will have the same programming fun as the Baofeng unfortunately. Here is the Amazon link...don’t forget to use tspaz when you order.
