Russia could use bases for its strategic bombers on the doorstep of the United States in Cuba and Venezuela to underpin long-distance patrols in the region, a senior air force officer said Saturday.

Russia: Venezuela, Cuba Could Offer Bomber Bases

March 14, 2009 | 1526 GMT

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has offered Russia the use of an island as a temporary base for strategic bombers, The Associated Press reported March 14, citing comments by Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev, Russian chief of staff for long-range aviation, published by Interfax news agency. Zhikharev said Cuba also could be used as a base for the planes, but the Kremlin said the plan was hypothetical.
