Got a little bit of work done today

Moved the radio tray and hard mounted one of the 2m/440cm radios. Plenty of room left for another radio and scanner.

Got a shelf installed over where the tool chest sits. No I will not leave the coleman fuel up there. It is just for reference so you can see how much space there is.

Moved the cabinets over some to leave space for the small fridge. Also moved the first aid kit so that I used the space more efficiently.

Got the 24v LED aux lamps hard mounted and moved the ZS fleet number to the bumper. I will come back and get rid of that over spray at some point.

Next on the list is to finish out the wiring for the lights. Then on to the other many projects.

Got the Aux lights wired in today.

Switch

Powered up in daylight

Both regular lamps and leds together

Normal head lights all by themselves

Normal headlights WITH the leds (about twice the distance illuminated plus more light thrown to the sides) Same exposure for both images.

Thanks for all the kudos. It is a fun project with real life applications and it keeps me busy.

BONUS

Just scored two of the Truck-Lite 24v headlamps on Ebay. So true hi/low beam LED's are on the way.

Now I just need to get the rest of the marker and brake lights in LED and never have to worry about losing a bulb again.

CMX - It may have been through this thread, but I saw that one person who was doing about the same had converted his from a Dual tire setup to a single tire setup in the rear.. saying it was less stress on the tires and axle.

Have you considered this?

Have you considered this?

They are built for the stress of dual wheels.
Drawbacks of going singles are :

Lose one tire and you might be DRT.
Much heavier tire so doing a swap is more difficult and dangerous.
More expensive to replace if you have one fail
Not as easy to find replacements.

But going back to the first draw back is the deal breaker for me.

Advantages are :

Look awesome
Higher top speed

My curiosity is totally peaked. You know I love your truck cmx, but I'm concerned about the maneuverability in the wilderness, and it seems like these are made for carrying a lot of weight and passing anything but a fuel station. Are you concerned about that in a SHTF scenario?

Looks like in the desert or open field, these would be awesome. But in a situation where fuel is unavailable, how far can you go before you have to leave the truck on the side of the road?

It has a tighter turning radius than a Ford F350. It gets about 10 MPG and I am adding a second 50 gal tank which will give me a max range of no fueling of about 1000 miles.

As for fuel in a full on SHTF setting. It is multi fuel. That means it can burn damn near any flammable liquid. So you see all those stalled out cars. Good. Go drain their motor oil, transmission fluid and gear oil... do a quick filtering (if there is time) dump it in the tank and motor on. You would be awash in fuel in a SHTF world where gas was gone.

I tore some forest in Germany up and also lots of field work in WA in a duce, They are surprisingly nimble for a vehicle of that size. Lot more fun to drive light than heavy though ;-) If you've spent any time in a duce, then you've had it up on 5 wheels at least once

I did see one get stuck once, and the 5 ton wrecker that tried to get it out got stuck and then the engineers tracked vehicle that tried to get them both out got stuck and they finally managed to get it (And the other vehicles) out with a crane. I figured if that duce could bury itself far enough out in a muddy field to get a 5 ton and a tracked vehicle stuck trying to get it out, it should be good.

I love em. Wish I could do one of these projects.

It takes some getting used to mentally that you can use more than one fuel in an engine without messing it up.

that is so cool. why haven't(?) they miniaturized this (old!) technology for regular cars and/or made it more common!??!? is this one of the trucks that jack mentioned the other day in the call in show?

Just keep in mind that you need a multifueler to burn practically anything and not all MVs are multi. The multi has special designed pistons, fuel system and engine timing. Interesting thing is you can bump start one by rolling backwards and putting it in a forward gear - causing the engine to run backwards due to the near TDC timing. IMHO the M109 and M820 series trucks are the ultimate in BOVs.

Not sure it would work in a smaller engine format and yes it is one of the trucks that Jack was talking about.

And someone should let Jack know that this thread is here. And you can get them ALOT cheaper than what he suggested. In fact most of the stuff on that link that he posted is double or more than other places that sell the same products.
