I was talking to an old timer up here and he was telling me there is a survival rifle which is a 22 that breaks down into a tiny compact case inside the
stock and is water proof.

A quick search I found this

I have read that these are hit or miss. If you can find the OLD version before Henry took them over, they are the old school Air Force Pilot survival rifle and are supposedly super good.

If you can find and afford one, the Savage 24C is a great gun.

My grandfather had this in his plane in Alaska (in AK, you are required to keep a gun in your plane).

It's 22 (I can't remember right now if it's 22LR or Magnum) over 20 guage.

Best of both worlds and breaks down easy into it's own case.

If you go to the video and photo section and look at the picture of the bug out gear I carry in my truck there is a picture of one. http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php/topic,233.msg1770.html#msg1770 They are cool as a novelty item and in a pinch they are better than nothing, but they are not reliable or accurate I would save your money or get a Ruger 10/22. Hope I did the link right I am a computer tard.

What problems are there with the henry and when did henry take them over ? That gun is an unbelievable 2.5 pounds, that's awesome. The Marlin might be cool, but it weighs twice that

I found here an over/under 12 gauge that weighs 6 pounds, that seems really light for that gun.

A good friend of mine has the Henry produced version of this gun, and hasn't had any issues that I know of.

I carry the Henry in my truck and havent had any problems with it. It suits it's purpose and is reasonably accurate.

I hereby pronounce the Henry AR 7 survival rifle the single worst firearm I've ever owned!

Not only did it reliably jam with every brand of ammunition i fed it. its natural point of impact fell outside anything close to the area covered by the sights.

After sending this POS back to the factory because of the sighting issue, i was shocked to find they had replaced my polymer barrel with steel rifled insert, and given me the upgraded full steel barrel which eliminated the problem not one bit.

I traded the thinge back to the shop that originally sold it to me out of pure spite for selling it to me in the first place.

I think marlin still makes the papoose. It doesnt pack up qute as small as henry, but its close, and you have the benifit of an all steel barrel, and a gun that will stand a lifetime of use.

My dad had one of the Savages, if I recall it was a .22 over a .410 shotgun. It was a great little varmint gun. You could take everything from a squirrel to a deer with it if needed.

I saw a henry at cabelas for $189, it was really super light, I guess you could shoot rabbits and squirrels with it.

I have one of the AR-7's by Charter.

It's kind of old and beat up but it functions quiet well. Accuracy is acceptable. I keep it and a box of ammo in my 72 hr kit. The ammo is a mix of every thing from CCI stinger, shot shell, Aguila sub sonic, and CB's.

The only function problems I've had were due to an aftermarket mag I bought.

Wasn't the first AR-7 chambered for the .22 Hornet? I thought I heard that somewhere once upon a time, but I cannot remember the reference source.

I believe you are thinking of the M6 Survival rifle issued by the Air Force. Originally it was chambered in .22 Hornet over .410.

I looked it up. The M6 also came with .45 as an option instead of .22, interesting. They also had a bolt action AR-5 in .22 Hornet. Thanks for pointing me the right direction.

For another option what about some of the .45 Colt/ 410 guage options out there. I used to own a contender barrel chambered this way and they made a removable shoulger stock for the gun. Pricing might be a little prohibitive. I've never shot one but H&R or NEF looks like they've got one too

i've been looking for a Springfield M6 Scout for a while if i could find one around the money i have. man are they pricy the cheapest used ones i've seen was around $400

Sorry saw the mention of the Springfield M6 and just had to resurrect this topic - they are on the expensive side and hard to find, but hands down one of the greatest plinking rifles you can find. Sure you wouldn't want to go into combat with one, but I keep mine in the truck for emergency hunting/plinking needs. The older M6's were .22 Hornet over .410 gauge; the more modern ones made by Springfield in the 1990s are .22LR over .410. Very sturdy and compact (it breaks down in two and fits inside a padded case); if you can find one (in your budget), jump all over it.

Agreed, the M6 is a great option for a "survival" carbine. Another often overlooked option is the short 10/22 CRR with a folding stock. Accurate and very compact.

I love the Browning pictured in the first link. I have never got to shoot one, but man, I used to dream about that thing as a kid. I think the barrel just unscrews from the stock and you're good to go. Kinda expensive though last I checked. Norinco makes what used to be a cheaper copy for those that don't mind imported Chinese junk, but I think they are getting more expensive now as well. I think I read on gunbroker they have, or are about to ban the importation of them.

Hey, I know this isn't the firearms topic, but I this post is really about a bug out bag or day pack.

I saw a guy at the gun store buying a foldable carbine in 9mm and thought, hey, that would fit nicely in a BOB.

It's a Keltec sub 2000 in 9mm.

Here it is folded up:

It takes standard Glock mags, including the 32 round one.

I mentioned this in another thread, but a buddy of mine has the modeal that accepts S&W Model 59 mags, and it's an awesome little gun. His Kel-Tec P11 handgun accepts the same mags so he has interchangability. I've been thinking about purchasing one of the little carbines myself.

I like it too but being a red dot freak, decided it wouldn't be for me, since it would clash with the fold-in-half feature. Still I really like this sub gun. The 33 round flexibility makes it even more attractive. Was "wallet out" on one a few months ago, but the sight limitation made me hesitate.

Iraq made me appreciate the AimPoints and Eotechs. Loved that I could easily and accurately shoot left handed from a moving vehicle (passenger side engagements).

*sigh*

For now, I'll use the Auto Ordnance folding M1 Carbine Tactical. Fits inside my BOB. I still haven't mounted the red dot on it cause the irons are so sweet. But I have it ready for mounting and zeroing.

I got to shoot one of these this weekend as well. It's a good shooter. Based on the interchangable Glock mags and some other factors in my requirements, I see one in my future. First, however, there will be some pistol and shotgun training.

I just got a Sig 556 pistol and converted it to a SBR with a folding stock, I did this so I could have a .223 in my BOB, for me, I didn't want to buy another type of ammo that I did not already have on hand, hence, my choice of BOB weapon

Since I have a 9mm side arm, I would go with 9mm in Keltec to standardize ammo. But if you have a .40 sidearm, the increases punch of a .40 in the Keltec would be nice.
