Want Cheap Trees for Your Permaculture Eden?
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:11:41 PM »
I was reading an old copy of BackHome Magazine and came across this great idea.  I was dumbfounded at what I found.  My home state seems to have a great program.  A few others are nice.  My comments below aren't digs at the departments.  Some just seem to have better programs than others.  The prices are extremely nice in most cases.  Granted you aren't going to find blackberries and peach trees but you will find persimmons and walnuts and things like that.

Hope you all get some mileage out of this.

KY  http://www.forestry.ky.gov/seedling/  Accepts out of state orders with conditions.

TN  http://state.tn.us/agriculture/publications/forestry/seedlingcatalog.pdf  Not clear about out of state orders.

AL--No apparent program

MS--No apparent program

FL  http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/onestop/forms/11206.pdf  Pretty weak--no well known food crops.

GA  http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/Seedlings/documents/SeedlingPriceList0910rev010410.pdf

NC  http://nc-forestry.stores.yahoo.net/containerized1.html  Weak

That's awesome. It would be cool to buy a bundle of 100 pawpaws, cherries, pecans or other fruit trees and just give them out to neighbors. Jack talks about what a great thing it would be if every suburban home replaced (or added) just one tree with something that is productive. This would be a great way to start making that happen.

Info on Wisconsin DNR nursery program, not too much in way of edible bearing trees, but large selection or hardwoods for those thinking long term, also coniferous for habitat as well.  Probably not useful for urban land owners due to minimum order requirements. Page has link to commercial nurseries.

Enjoy.
