Looks like I will be picking this up in the near future.
Seems to be in excellent shape aside from a few rust spots. No fluid leaks and is clean inside.
More pics later.

Sweet! Cant beat a deuce and and a half. Pretty much run on anything you put down the filler tube.
-
8) definitely a 10 on the cool BOV scale
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruQFh_TkPto
Now that's how you test drive a Deuce!
-
Ok I'm officially drooling here! That'll make an awesome BOV! ;D
-
Put the deposit down today. The fellow is going to go over it to make sure there are no safety problems (cracked tires etc) and we are waiting on the SF97 from the .gov so I can get it titled.
:)
-
Any specific plans? Might I recommend an auxiliary fuel tank? Lol they get about half of zero mpg
Have longed fondly of owning one myself. Nice find will be interesting to see it progress
-
I plan on putting a 100g aux tank in the back. My plans are to turn it into a camper/bov that way if nothing happens we have a kick ass RV and if it gets bad we don't have to leave our stuff unattended as we travel to the BOL

-
I was just thinking - the size of the beast - it could be both a BOV and BOL at the same time.
I think that truck weight just might fit under the requirement for a commercial license. No space to store that type of hardware where I live....the best I could to fit in my garage would be a M416...
Thanks for sharing.
-
You are correct that you do not need a CDL to drive it.
No space here so I am using an RV storage lot to keep it. Not my first choice but it is all that I have.
-
Absolutely amazing BOV! I hope you are planning to share pictures once you get it all set up! BTW: What is that unit up in the top left of the front wall of the box(directly above and behind where the driver sits)? Is that some sort of heating unit?
-
That is awesome!
Congratulations on the BOV/pseudo-BOL!
:)
-
that is a heating unit. :D
-
missed this thread on the first go-round, but when I saw the title I thought you were getting one of these and I was extremely envious!!!!!!

Cool BOV though, looking forward to the thread on fixing it up.
-
This is too cool!
-
That is sweet!
I hope you keep this thread updated as you move along!
-
Did some work on it today while the weather was good.

Next is to put the solid oak hardwood flooring I found on craigslist in. This is a fun project.
-
That is too cool. That thing has so much freakin' potential! :)
Radio and antenna for comms?
Generator? Solar Panels?
-
gonna put a few hundred watts of solar on the roof and another hundred Ah in batteries in it. I have a few radios that will go it in.
it will be epic :D
-
picking it up tomorrow
-
picking it up tomorrow
And you have the whole weekend to play with it.
:)
-
amazing what a little paint can do..
-
What's the square footage in the back there? The wide angle shots are throwing off my spacial relations a little bit.
-
If you restore the exterior to original military finish, you might be able to license it as a "Special Interest" or Historical Vehicle - Save you a ton of money on licensing fees and maybe insurance.
Nice truck, by the way. They'll get stuck go places no 4X4 would dare to go.
soup
;D
-
Here in Jersey you could register it as an antique (over 25yrs old) and as long as you have another vehicle registered as your primary car Antique Ins is 75-100$ a year
Nice paint job really brightens it inside alot

It is around 86 sqft

Where is the cup holder?
That is the best BOV I have seen in quite some time. Best of luck, and might consider a 50 cal mount on the top. For show, of course...

No cup holder.. but it still has the two M16 racks in front :D

So, on the way home, did you notice the sensation of the road in front of you just "opening up"? No one daring to cut you off in traffic? People accelerating or changing lanes to make room for the camo creature in their rear view mirror?
;D
-
The times I did actually catch up to people yes. But most of the times people just slowed down as they passed then moved on. One idiot did pull in front of me while I was on a secondary street and upon realizing I was not slowing down promptly unassed the area in front of me.
-
Can't wait to hear what the neighbors think of your purchase! Ever think about driving that thing in the next 4th of July parade? A guy in a neighboring town has a WWII era 6 wheeled armored personnel carrier and runs it in the parade....very awesome sight!
-
Please post pics, cmxterra, as you work on it. I want to see the transformation over time.
:)
Is it going to get a new color scheme or will that remain the same?
-
there is a group that runs some mv's in the 4th parade. Might have to join them.
as for the paint I am not sure. Still deciding.
-
Got some good work done today.
Picked up some 1/4 plywood for the subfloor.

-
This is awesome! Can't wait to see how it progresses. Where are you keeping it while you work on it?
-
Right now I have it at the house. But to keep a wife happy it can only stay here a few days at a time. The rest of the time I found a person here in town with some land that he rents space to RV's and such to keep it.
I wish I had more land here at the house to keep it here all the time. Oh well.
-
Man, that thing is lookin' better every day.
(How many BOV's do you know of that have hardwood flooring?!)
-
Starting to look good now.

Indeed it is! I need to get one of these :D
-
Is this truck the multi-fuel variety?
I know it's bad, but what sort of mileage does it get?
I love the concept, it's a robust truck/camper combination.
-
It is the multi-fuel
I have not had a full tank through it yet but from what I understand it gets about 10mpg or so.
It has a 50gl tank and I am going to add another 50 to 100gl
-
It's the multi-fuel that really makes this truck shine as a bug out vehicle. And 10mpg ain't bad for a truck this big.
-
I have not had a full tank through it yet but from what I understand it gets about 10mpg or so.
That would be awesome. My buddy's gets like 500ft per gallon. :o
-
Got the floor done today. Advil is my friend.
I will get some pics tomorrow.
-
Love the detailed conversion you are doing. Keep the pics coming.
-
It is fun to share the project.
Next on my list is to seal the roof of the camper section. There is some rust up there and it is letting some water in. So I am either going to go the Herculiner route or find some other way to get some rubberized sealant.
I did look at the spray on stuff but they are wanting way more than I have to spend to get it done.
-
Your local RV dealer would probably have some products/suggestions for your roof sealer.
-
Happy camper.

What are your other plans for the interior?
-
Bunk bed.. Counter top with sink/ cook top.. Cabinets.. Maybe a small flat screen and DVD player.. Small Fridge.
-
My only concern is if someone tried locking you in it. Can you use the smaller windows as an escape hatch? Does that bar dividing the window come out.
-

It does

Another fun filled day.
Found some roof repair tape (commercial grade) Stuff was expensive 95 bucks for a 4" x50' roll. But buy once cry once on this part (and the spray on liner involved too much crying so I skipped that)
Also you can see some 3M undercarrage spray.

I used three cans of the spray but that was not enough. I think I am going to need at least three more, maybe four.
-
Looks good with the undercoating !! after a couple days the undercoating dries enough you can paint over it if you want to The 08881 3M you bought is good stuff i've been using it for over 20 years. Did they come with the straw and extra nozzle? you can be very neat with the straw, the wide spray tip it comes with is a little sloppy. you can use one of of a can of carb cleaner or brake cleaner as a substitute. A little tip keep the cans warm before you spray keeps them from blocking the sprayer or straw longer and helps you use the whole can. leave in the house on the radiator or in the sun in the window. I let the car/truck run with the heat blowing on the can on the floor on fall days like now if was too much of a pain to go in and out and i didn't want to touch anything with U/Coat on my hands
I like the truck alot, it looks great with the wood floor & paint job 8)
-
thanks for the tip on the 3M stuff

cool!!! good job. great project. keep posting, i'm living vicariously thru you
-
Excellent choice on the roof stuff. Eternabond is the best stuff for this purpose. With all my past and current motorhomes and travel trailers I grew very familiar with eternabond. This doesn't help you much now, but that exact same roll of eternabond is $57 with free shipping on Amazon and I have seen it on a couple websites recently in the high $40's.
I am working on making your thread and ncjeepers thread into stickies. Asked an admin to help me out and waiting on a response.
(edit) Figured it out. Someone beat me to ncjeepers

I did see it cheaper but I needed it now. Weather moving in and I have to move it to a storage spot and wanted it to be sealed.

great :-P
now that the roof is sealed I can finish the trim on the floor and finish the interior painting.
other projects in the works are some led aux lamps. Also on the prowl for full led replacements for all the lights.

Is the truck 24 volt or 12?
-
24v
-
While I realize the size of the truck, and it's capacity,.. I wonder about the weight that the hardwood adds...
It looks awesome regardless.
-
While I realize the size of the truck, and it's capacity,.. I wonder about the weight that the hardwood adds...
I'm going to throw out a guess that the wood flooring weighs a LOT less than the radios that used to live in there! :D
Having fun watching the transformation - and looking forward to its trail debut.
-N
-
Maybe he can shed some light, but I'd guess the hardwood and subfloor weigh a 250-300 pounds, if that, and will effectively make no difference with this truck. He probably would not notice the first couple of tons of gear driving it.
-

seeing as it is road rated to carry 5000#'s in the back, the couple hundred pounds of the wood will be noticed. Even once I fully furnish the back I seriously doubt that I will be coming near the rated capacity.
-
What are your plans for furnishing the truck and making the most out of the space available?
-
I'm going to add a twin sized bunk bed which should allow for mom and me on the bottom and both kids on the top.
Other plans are to find a stainless steel table to mount a sink/stove on with one of the small "dorm" refrigerators under it. Then mount cabinets above that.
I have seen where people have mounted fresh water tanks either under the van or under the bunk bed.
The rest of the area I am going to have to think about as there are some other things I want to add such as a decent sized battery bank to run off solar.
-
The 7" LED aux lights showed up today.
Need to figure out how I am going to wire them up :)

I have no doubt that it can handle the hardwood.. Everything is a little bit of a trade off.. It looks awesome.. and something I would be interested in doing myself...But with my brother have a 5th Wheel RV,.. He's kinda gotten me into the mode of watching the weight..
The Aux lights look nice.. Can't wait to see them on. Don't know if you are inclined to do so.. but a running parts list would be cool.. And where you got them (so I know where to look for when I can mod my truck..

Worked on repairing a rust through spot on the front of the van.

Wider view so you can see the area (also notice I got the 5gl German Jerry can in) If you look at the can, that is the color I am thinking about painting the whole thing. Leaving the wheels and a few other parts flat black. What does the hive mind think??

I also did some underbody coating in the front wheel wells but it is sort of hard to see. Makes it look better but not sure how much noise reduction I will see from it.
-
No pics.. but I repaired the middle side window on the passenger side.
The wood had split from the frame allowing the glass to start to slide out. Pulled the wood frame and worked it so that it fit correctly and then resealed it into the metal frame and reinstalled the glass. I think it is ready for a MN winter now.
Not sure what will be next as the temps are dropping here so I think I will have to wait till spring to do the repainting.
I think I will work on installing the aux lights and keep an eye out for full LED replacments if I can find a good deal on them.

Keep it up.
I love checking back to this thread and seeing all the progress.

Your truck looks great. LEDs are pricy but an excellent upgrade. I know there are many options out there on the web. I'm a fan of www.v-leds.com They are a bit more for the "ricer" croud, but have top shelf LED stuff and are very knowledgeable. I'm not sure what they have that would fit your truck, but they have great customer service. As a matter of fact I'd guess they would get a huge kick out of helping you with your truck.

There are actually just two vendors that sell LED replacements for my truck Truck-Lite and Grote. They are not just bulb replacements but they replace the entire unit with dedicated LED parts. I wish it was so easy as to just replace the bulb. :) (well I guess you could but the results would not be as good as the full replacement parts)
-
I have Grote tail lights on my rig. Expensive but well built and have held up fine since installing them back in 2001
-

You won't go wrong with either brand. 90%+ of all the big rigs on the highway are running one of the 2 brands, some both. The trick to long life with them is to put a little electrical grease in the connectors. Most problems/failures are a result of corrosion, not a failed light assembly, which have a great warranty.
-
I have a set of them on my M101A3 trailer and they rock. I hope I can find some at the same price I found those at. They can be expensive.
The LED aux lights I have to install are Truck-lite's so I expect that they will rock. They also make LED headlight replacements that I am on the lookout for.

cmxterra, your neighbors must LOVE you! Do you keep the truck out front all the time?
-
if i was his neighbor i'd be out drooling over it all the time.
-
I was less worried about the neighbors and more worried about my wife :) So it stays off site about 8 miles from the house. I can keep it at the house about a week at a time without ruffling too many feathers.
One of my neighbors actually came by when I first got it and said "You have all the husbands saying THAT IS SO COOL and all the wives saying NO WAY IN HELL"

Why would you put down hardwood flooring instead of some type of thick rubberized flooring mats with more flexibility?

What is your overall plan for the interior layout design: features, electronics, sleeping, storage, ect.....
-
Question:

I went with wood because it looks nice and was an easier sell to the wife
-
What is your overall plan for the interior layout design: features, electronics, sleeping, storage, ect.....
bunk bed (twin over full)
LCD tv
small fridge
microwave
counter top with cook top
cabinets and other storage
solar on roof with battery bank
ham radios
propane tank for stove
led lighting
aux fuel tank
repainting
I'm sure more things will add to the list.
-
Great job - great hobby truck, and all for less than the cost of an equivalent sized boat. (Might mention that to the Mrs.) Speaking of boats, you might find some of the stuff you are looking for - stoves, fridges, sink and water tanks, etc., at a good sized yachting supply house, even down to slosh-proof chemical toilets.
If I can also suggest - you might also want to sturdily mount a bench seat from a van, complete with seat belts, for folks who ride in the back. Hit a curb or chuckhole at the wrong time, or - God forbid - an accident.........

-
I've been looking at kitchenettes (like the kind you would find in a small cabin) and a restaurant type table that is steel construction that can be bolted down.
-
I found a kitchenette used for less than I can get all the individual parts for (stove, sink, fridge and counter)
What does the hive mind think? Go modular for easier replacement or get the all in one to save on space and money.
Edit to add a pic of what I am looking at getting.

Save the money and go with the all-in-one for now. Leave some fudge-room around it so if/when there's a breakdown of one of the components that you can't fix, you have enough space to swap it out with the modular components you're considering (presuming they take up more space than the all-in-one). In the meantime, use the savings for some other part of the project.
$0.02 deposited. ;)

go with the all in one as long as it works well.

Adding my vote for the all in one unit as well. I like the look of it too. Kinda cool and retro. lol Plus that stainless top should be easy to keep clean.
How is the unit powered? Looks like a propane stove, but is the fridge propane as well? Those small propane fridges don't use much gas and have always worked pretty well for me. Or is it one that works on propane and electric?

If you have the room and it wont hamper your original plans then go with the all in one unit.
-
Well I went today to look at the all in one that I found on Craigslist. It has seen better days and there was rust in spots that looked important. That and the seal around the fridge was not soft and did not make a good seal. I am going to see how much the replacement seal is along with some other parts. Might not be worth it.
bummer.

I am sorry that the all in one was in rough shape.
Thank you for posting the pic of it anyway. Even when things don't work out the way that you planned, your ideas and pictures are of great value to the members here as far as seeing what you are thinking. We are all learning a great deal from this thread.

it was a gas/electric unit and would have rocked. I might look into getting a new unit as I really like the all in one aspect. New ones are pricy though :-(

Maybe take a shot at finding a cheap low use FEMA trailer rip out what you need and scrap/sell whats left

Very cool project, my guess is it will be solar powered ?

you guess correctly. I will have a genny but primary will be solar.

Got my Glad Hands hose made today. Now I will be able to use air tools in the field. Woot!

That is the right trailer for my truck. Nice genny in the back too. Those show up on the GL site all the time and now I have been thinking of getting one.. Oh how the wife will kill me. (until SHTF and we need it then I become the hero)

I currently dont have a use for it, but was tempted to put in a bid just because of the cool factor. :)

Looks like I found a suitable bed. It is a twin over Full bunk bed (and the full is a Futon so it can double as a couch when just relaxing)

As with everything that I am putting back there it will be mounted to both the floor and to the wall (there is a mounting rail along the length of both side walls)

OK..
Here is a quick mock up of what I am thinking

And the other side

with the empty space on either side I am thinking of a rolling tool chest for spare parts and other useful items.
Input? Suggestions?
-
Just to keep it more open, I would look at putting the bed toward the front of the box unless you are planning a window A/C in the forward window. I'm working on a similar project and have given myself the goal of keeping the floor as open as possible toward the rear doors. I think it will cut down on the claustrophobic feel of being in a box as well as keep some floor space available for loading big(er) cargo. I'm shooting for enough room for a quad/rzr/???. I'm looking toward a murphy bed.
-
I should clarify.. in the top image the back of the box is to the right.
In the bottom image the back of the box is to the left.
-
Got the bed.

It is just the right size that I can switch it from one side to the other without taking it apart. This will allow me to really plan this layout well.

A quick note. There is a kit you can buy that is a do it yourself bed liner simular to a linex or rhino type. Note as think of course but still good and strong. You roll it on. Works pretty good. I was wondering what year is that truck and if I may ask what was a ballpark cost for it? I am really enjoying watch the progress and it is really going to be a nice setup when your done. I am also a ham and would love to have one of these as a rv / mobile hamshack. Keep up the good work.

I was going to use that on the roof but seeing as there were some spots that the liner would not have totally sealed due to rust I went the way I did with the industrial sealing tape and the spray on stuff.
The truck is a 1971 and I paid 4600 for it. That seems to be about the going price on one depending on its condition. When it is done I will have a radio in the van section for sure and might have another in the cab.
-
I think I might copy your tan with wood floor. I like the look. Have you sorted out the transfer switch/electrical in the box yet? Any plans for an onboard generator connected to it?
-
It actually came with a transfer switch and all the breakers for either 24v or 120. There is an outlet on the outside of the van that allows for the direct connection of either shore power or a genny.
Question I have for myself now is do I run my solar to work on 24v or leave it as 12v so I can run 12v things. I am leaning to keeping it 12v.
-
Are there separate outlets for 24v vs 120v?
-
No. There are no 24v outlets in the van. Just 120. The transfer switch is for the lighting. I will have to take some close up images of the electrical area to show.
-
Added to the gear for the BIG TRUCK.
Ingersoll Rand Titanium impact wrench and a set of both shallow and deep sockets up to 1 1/2 in.
Misc tie down points that I am going to install in the van for lashing down misc stuff.
Craftsman 11 drawer tool chest
Mounting bracket for the 24" tv.
Still looking for cabinets. Might have to break down and just buy new. Yuck.

Speaking of trailers.... I spotted this on Craigslist and while I'd like it I don't have the means to haul it home (no pintle hitch for my Jeep right now) it would be very cool.

That is a M105 and your jeep would die trying to pull it. It was designed to be pulled behind trucks like mine. The M101 series is what you want for smaller vehicles. Be happy you did not get it :)

I actually found three just like this one.

Also be SUPER mindful of the weight of all the stuff you're putting in it.
Use lightweight materials, and honeycomb the cabinets where possible to save weight.
-
although I am mindful of the weight I doubt I will have anywhere near the 5k rating for gear in the rear.
-
although I am mindful of the weight I doubt I will have anywhere near the 5k rating for gear in the rear.
Going off the gear you have already put in, and have listed as going in,.. and a previous point I asked.. I think the only way to get close to the limit is if you add water tanks. If you install saddle tanks for water, then your limit could be more reachable.. But if you don't plan to add the tanks,.. your gear list should be quite doable.
-
When I do put tanks in They will not be bigger than 40gallon.

I think I found the cabinet/ storage that I am going to go with.
All metal construction and they are lockable so no worries about things flying open while in motion. Stainless Steel top too which looks nice.
My only complaint is that the two lower cabinets can not be put flush next to each other due to the doors on the vertical one. I am thinking of getting a piece of metal to fill the gap so there is no place for crap to fall between them.

Got the fire extinguisher installed and picked up a dedicated med kit today.
Also picked up a few pieces of cast iron cookware that I can keep in the deuce. I need to get a good name for her now that I think about it.

Did some more research about the cabinets.
After going to Home Depot and looking at the ones I posted above I am having second thoughts about them. They seem to have been made in a half assed way. The top is actually smaller than the drawers under them so there is some space on either side which looks like crap. Another problem is that with the way the hinges are on the vertical cabinet you can not put it directly next to the cabinet with the drawers. This is not acceptable.
Looks like Lowes sells a more thought out unit. A little more expensive but seems more refined and complete. I am going to do a drive by tomorrow to put eyes on it and see if they are as good as they look online and worth the extra cash.
Here is the HD unit

The only thing that bums me out about the Lowes cabinet is that they do not have a five drawer unit that would go with it. I would have to get two of the same.

Good to look at as they have few pieces that is seems Lowes does not have. But Lowes will let me pay over 6 months no interest :D

Family Personnel Carrier (FPC)
my vote there....

I like the tool/cabinet set up alot. Have you bolted the top box to the bottom tool box? One good bump or hilly turn and you may have a flying toolbox. almost all the newer boxes if take the drawers out have holes predrilled for bolts, if not drill 4 3/8" holes and put washers and locknuts and your all set. I've moved many a toolbox on a flatbed and seen many guys lose them on the roads not realizing how much they actually weigh.
A good idea but i hate to see you wreck your floor is to bolt a piece of angle iron to the floor like a wheel chock to wedge the box in place or a couple ring bolts in the floor to tie it down they would look neater and could be used for other tie downs. I don't want to see you get hurt by a flying toolbox ;)
-
I did secure the top box to the bottom box via some metal screws.
I was thinking if I want something to stay put I am going to put so no-slide pad under the footings and then secure them to the walls via angle iron. Maybe.. just maybe on the main cabinets I will secure them to the floor.
-
That's a good way too bolt it to the walls. When does the flat screen and XBox or PS3 go in?? :D
-
flat screen is ready to go in.
-
Maybe I need to look for a small box truck.. I like the idea of using a school bus too.

If I were to convert a school bus,.. and I'd like to one day.. I'd replace the axles for ones from a cement truck.. that will give you the gearing and the 4x4 option.
Maybe also put in gas bags to lower the center of gravity for normal road use.

No tint on the windows. They are fairly high off the ground so no real worries of someone walking up and peeping in.
As for the water. I am still working on that.

The gas version (made by a different company) is a good 300.00 bucks more. Makes me sad.
Of course if I look at it from the standpoint that it would give me a third way to cook then it could be a good thing. I could use the Coleman mutli-fuel most of the time and if in a crunch I could use the electric. (it is a 500 and 1000w burner)

The air driven drill really sucks the cfm's. My buddy has a converted york compressor and air tank on his toyota truck. We were doing a trail fix and it couldnt keep up. We would drill for about 20 seconds and then it would stop and we would have to wait for it to refill. I have an onboard welder on my jeep with a 110v dc outlet. I use an electric drill from it and it works great. Something to think about.
-
Another option is to source a 12 volt cordless drill (super cheap if it has bad batteries)and convert it to 12 volt corded drill. Plug it into a cig lighter socket and away you go.

Got a little bit of work done today

Continued compliments on an awesome project....
-
dude this is awesome. found the thread and caught up on the project and you're awesome! this is making me want a project but i keep remembering that i'm on a serious budget because of the wedding...........next year i'll have a project. a house. but enough about me. your truck shall be named sasquatch in my opinion. that is all
-
Thanks for all the kudos. It is a fun project with real life applications and it keeps me busy.
Louisiana Suvivor: I understand the budget concerns of doing this build as I am a stay at home dad and all my income is currently coming from photography that I can do when the Lady of the house gets home. (cheaper than day care). But let me tell you Craigslist is your friend.
-
that's awesome! i'm gonna learn from you because you seem to be doing it right and yes craig is a great friend! lol
-
BONUS
Just scored two of the Truck-Lite 24v headlamps on Ebay. So true hi/low beam LED's are on the way.
Now I just need to get the rest of the marker and brake lights in LED and never have to worry about losing a bulb again.

Awesome.. Wished I could fall in behind with another (that would be a interested site,.. the TSP MilSpec Convoy.. lol
CMX - It may have been through this thread, but I saw that one person who was doing about the same had converted his from a Dual tire setup to a single tire setup in the rear.. saying it was less stress on the tires and axle.
Have you considered this?

They are built for the stress of dual wheels.
Drawbacks of going singles are :
Lose one tire and you might be DRT.
Much heavier tire so doing a swap is more difficult and dangerous.
More expensive to replace if you have one fail
Not as easy to find replacements.
But going back to the first draw back is the deal breaker for me.
Advantages are :
Look awesome
Higher top speed

My curiosity is totally peaked. You know I love your truck cmx, but I'm concerned about the maneuverability in the wilderness, and it seems like these are made for carrying a lot of weight and passing anything but a fuel station. Are you concerned about that in a SHTF scenario?
Looks like in the desert or open field, these would be awesome. But in a situation where fuel is unavailable, how far can you go before you have to leave the truck on the side of the road?
-

It has a tighter turning radius than a Ford F350. It gets about 10 MPG and I am adding a second 50 gal tank which will give me a max range of no fueling of about 1000 miles.
As for fuel in a full on SHTF setting. It is multi fuel. That means it can burn damn near any flammable liquid. So you see all those stalled out cars. Good. Go drain their motor oil, transmission fluid and gear oil... do a quick filtering (if there is time) dump it in the tank and motor on. You would be awash in fuel in a SHTF world where gas was gone.
-
I tore some forest in Germany up and also lots of field work in WA in a duce, They are surprisingly nimble for a vehicle of that size. Lot more fun to drive light than heavy though ;-) If you've spent any time in a duce, then you've had it up on 5 wheels at least once ;) ;D :o
I did see one get stuck once, and the 5 ton wrecker that tried to get it out got stuck and then the engineers tracked vehicle that tried to get them both out got stuck and they finally managed to get it (And the other vehicles) out with a crane. I figured if that duce could bury itself far enough out in a muddy field to get a 5 ton and a tracked vehicle stuck trying to get it out, it should be good.
I love em. Wish I could do one of these projects.
-
Oh.. and it gets the about the same fuel mileage fully loaded or empty. It does not really care much.

It takes some getting used to mentally that you can use more than one fuel in an engine without messing it up.

that is so cool. why haven't(?) they miniaturized this (old!) technology for regular cars and/or made it more common!??!? is this one of the trucks that jack mentioned the other day in the call in show?
-
military diesels can run on nearly any oil...
Just keep in mind that you need a multifueler to burn practically anything and not all MVs are multi. The multi has special designed pistons, fuel system and engine timing. Interesting thing is you can bump start one by rolling backwards and putting it in a forward gear - causing the engine to run backwards due to the near TDC timing. IMHO the M109 and M820 series trucks are the ultimate in BOVs.
-

Not sure it would work in a smaller engine format and yes it is one of the trucks that Jack was talking about.
And someone should let Jack know that this thread is here. And you can get them ALOT cheaper than what he suggested. In fact most of the stuff on that link that he posted is double or more than other places that sell the same products.

Good. :)

CMX - Are they generally sold in different states, or one central location? WHile I can't do anything now, it would be a fun project to do,.. I've heard there is a depot close to central KY (AVON) and since the BGAD (Bluegrass Army Depot) is close, I would think that there would be some nearby.
I see some on eBay.. Hmm There is a kraz 255 TMM 3 Bridge..That would be fun.. To have the M109a3 and the Kraz - nearly nowhere you couldn't get to..
-
They are sold all over the place. If you want to get them directly from the US Government here is the site you go to bid on them when they come up for auction.
http://www.govliquidation.com (http://www.govliquidation.com)
Check your state to see what is around you.

Why these and not HID or H4? They are pretty expensive.
-
Why these and not HID or H4? They are pretty expensive.
Last longer than either of those
Not a single point of failure (with just one bulb)
Draw less current
Better beam pattern
Look cool as shit (very cool looking shit, not your normal shit)
I got them for well under retail

Found it:
Here is a thread I found of another project with the M109.

Why these and not HID or H4? They are pretty expensive.
one of the big problems of HID replacements is 99.9% are illegal to install into a vehicle that has regular H series replaceable halogen bulbs, no matter what the package says HID's are meant to be placed into a lens assy made for HID to project the light correctly. you've seen many on the road that don't focus right and throw light all over everywhere except down the road but when you see a caddy-benz-bmw with them they look right. all the DOT rules in the world doesn't keep them from being sold every day sadly.
The LEDs Cmxterra has are Dot approved and have the correct codes on the lamp, you pay more but they fit correctly, friggin bright and really light the road ahead.
-
I wondered about a slightly different project.
Not sure which truck it is, maybe the 815 with a 20' bed, and then build your own box using SIP panels. I don't know if I would want a 9' tall box all the time, so build it similar to a Hi-lo trailer...
Still looking for a m109a3 - more as to just waiting til I can pick up one. Mobile Ham shack or smoke shack....
-
How about an M820? It is the big brother to the M109. It doesn't collapse but it does expand. 17' deep box. 3' expansion on each side. Comes with everything but the plumbing.
-
Only problem with those is it is based on the 5 ton and you need a CDL to drive it, unlike the 109.
That said they are awesome.

I thought about the slide outs too.. but wonder if it would make the rig unstable.

I've seen some commercial rigs licensed without a CDL.. IDK,.. but maybe you can do it...
However, I'd rather not deal with the paper work and what not as having to had a CDL several years ago.
-
I think the trick to not needing a CDL is if you register it as an RV
-
I thought about the slide outs too.. but wonder if it would make the rig unstable.
maybe it's intended to only slide out once stopped?
-
Yep, RV is the ticket although there are some hoops to jump through depending on what state you are in. The box expands only when not moving. It takes it from 8' to 14' wide x 17' deep. The M109 is the hot ticket though. Anyone interested should check out the M109A3 vs the M109A4. Both are awesome, but for different reasons. The A3 is a multifueler and manual trans - simple tech and easy to work on. The A4 has a newer CAT diesel, auto trans (wife-friendly?), split brake system, CITS - more comforts and more to work on.

The A4 is nice.. but all the bonuses that you listed were negatives for me since I was looking just for a BOV with the least number of break points.

That's why I have a 800 vs a 900 too. Just have to do some driver training for the family in case I can't drive. What size are the NDTs on your 109? Just curious.

yeah i'm with you. the least amount of break points is the way to go. less problems on the road while the zombies are after you is a plus for me!

looks awesome with those Asphalt melters, can't wait for the nighttime pics 8) great job

I went out last night and did some adjustments on the beams and will want to get to a completely dark place to take the pics. They are very nice and the light is awesome. Good throw for the LEDs and street signs with the reflective surface pop.
They remind me of the HIDs I have on my Xterra but with less current draw and not a single failure point.
-
Totally Totally Awesome!!!! I'm drooling. Awesome posts and pics. Keep it up.

Update Pics of Lights:
All the images were shot at the exact same exposure.
Although not shot on the same night showing the same markers you get a general idea of what the stock headlights look like. The road in this image is about 25 yards from the truck.

I still need to do a little bit of tweaking to get the beams just where I want them. Overall it is a VAST improvement over the standard lights and well worth the money.
-
Holycow cmxterra!!! Those things really light up the night! Maybe you should call them landing lights and not just headlights? lol ;D
Awesome job on the photos too. That really shows just how well those new lights light things up. It's hard to believe those are LEDs and just how little power they're taking to give all of that light!
Maybe a pair of LED spotlights up on the cab would go along with those? ;)
Thanks for showing us all how those lights are working for ya cmx!
WVMan73
-
They look Awesome ;) I guarantee you won't have any slow pokes in front of you playing lane hog. You'll be settin' their hair on fire when you hit the high beams
-
Yeah shouldnt have any problems out running those lights. Of course top speed is like 45mph down hill with the wind behind ya right. ;D
-
If I may, what kind of current draw do the LEDs have? They are nice.
I may have missed it, but are they DOT legal?
Thanks.
-
You're going to be calling down UFOs with those lights on! ;D
Seriously though, that's some impressive illumination.

They are DOT legal and current draw per light is about 2.4amps

A little more work today while the weather was nice
Used a back feed extension cable to test out the A/C. You can also see the bins above the tool chest and the deep basket installed on the door.

From the other side. You can see how bright the fluorescent lights are in this pic. Also notice the new shelf next to the T.V.
I need to get a new shore power plug on the outside so I don't have to back feed. From now on though I will be keeping the small generator with her along with icky gasoline. It is nice to be able to charge electric tools, watch t.v. and listen to music now. Of course when I get the solar on the roof I should not have to resort to generator power much. Spring time can not get here soon enough.
-
I swear that comparing the inside of the M109 to the outside it looks like two different vehicles... Or a vehicle and a small apartment.
Nice work!

CMxterra you have truely set the bar high with your BOV. Obviously you pay attention to detail. Do you have a "Floorplan" you've drawn up? If not I'd love to see one once you've got things settled. Are you going to have a "kitchen table/booth" type spot? What are your plans for the exterior (besides the bottle opener) for camping?

I started with a floor plan but soon altered it due to the varying products and sizes of things. I have a general idea in my mind as to how I want it to turn out and there are some aspects of the design I have yet to build (i.e. the battery bank for the solar panels)
As for the kitchen table I was thinking a fold up table that could be placed outside the vehicle as the inside is not as big as the pictures make it out to be (fisheye lenses do that)
For the exterior I am planning on a 360 deg area lighting. I am thinking one on each corner of the van. LED and flood. I have also flirted with the idea of putting some type of awning on one side. We will see how that works out.

So I thought I would make a post, heck this may even be my first one. As far as I know and have experienced. As long as what ever you are driving and you are not using it for commercial purposes you do not need a CDL, hence the C in CDL. My neighbor has many historic tractors owns a triple axle Pete with a 48 ft flat deck trailer. He hauls them all over the western states and he hauls his and friends of ours rock crawlers to Moab.
No CDL needed because it is for recreational purpose.
Look at all the older generation who own a 40ft bus with a 25ft trailer behind it, no CDL there, just watch them drive ;)
-
Ha it was

Almost.
Once you get to a certain weight you have to have a CDL no matter what you are using the vehicle for. The cut off is 26k pounds.

24v impact gun for your truck, thought you might like it

I bet that baby would be a bear to handle if it grabbed while drilling.
-
I have a cpl 120v models from Ingersol/Rand, they're are fantastic to have around for a quick tire change or a bitchy nut/bolt on a boiler. They are plenty strong for auto/Lt truck nuts. Sometimes though for bigger stuff like Hub nuts or frozen lugs I need the air tools but for a quick brake job or tire they're great. Now i see alot more powerful battery powered impacts arounds finally the batteries caught up a little

Almost.
Once you get to a certain weight you have to have a CDL no matter what you are using the vehicle for. The cut off is 26k pounds.

Thank you so much for doing this with all the pics. Sooooo Waaay Cooool 8) >drooling< For a long time I have been telling hubby I wanted an "old army truck" but didn't really know how to describe it. Emailed him this thread now he will know what I am talking about! This looks great! Your wife has to love it now!?
@ HUBBY hint hint. ;D B-day is less than 2 months away

This is an awesome thread cmxterra! I've actually been looking for a truck like that for some time now but wasn't really sure if I wanted to go with the M35 or the M109, but after seeing this [and a few other threads] I've decided on the M109.
One thing I may suggest, since it may help out people like me, could you put all of the information in the first post you made [IE: pics, websites, products, etc.]?
Can't wait to see what else you are going to do with this! Definitely a bada$$ truck!
-
Where can I get one? Seriously, where do you buy these???
-
Where can I get one? Seriously, where do you buy these???
You can find them online, if you're lucky.
From what I've found, these are not as easy to come by as the M35s. You might want to search for military surplus vehicles in your area and call them to see if they have this specific model.
-
Look around on Craigslist. People price the shit out of them on there but if you haggle well you might get a deal.
One guy on there said it was a pain in the butt getting a civvy title for it. Was that your experience cmxterra? Looking sharp btw.

no problem at all getting the title. Varies by state.

First bracket going on. And let me tell you. PITA. There are air tanks and wiring behind that frame rail so extra caution was had drilling the holes.

Using new fasteners did make it easier. This is as far as I have gotten on the spare tank. I have one other little thing I need to do. Relocate the parking brake cable so that the tank does not hit it.
So while taking a brake from that I moved on to something easier.
Here you see the stock position of the air intake.

I will see if I am motivated enough to get that brake cable moved later today. Or wait till it is back out of the 50's to work on it.

so, are you going to ditch the spare tire completely? or you have another home for it?

If I am just driving around town I can limp home if I lose a tire. If I am bugging out the spare will be following behind me in the trailer.

My God, you can probably feel my jealousy from wherever you are. Great work!

I may have missed it, but what kind of trailer will you be pulling? The M101 or?

Lots of electronics, engine control and function being the most critical.
Plus tied to just one fuel. Diesel.

Thinking of drilling the hole for the power lines under the panels to help keep it water sealed and away from anything that might try to snag the lines.
There is also a slight rise on the far sides of the panels to allow for the junction boxes to not hit the roof (about an inch and a half)

CMXterra: Could you tell us how you purchased your truck and what kind of experience it was? Did you go through the site Jack has referenced in his podcasts or similiar? If it was a Gvt. auction where you able to inspect it first? Thanks. I'm interested if I can get one for under $3K (dunno if that's possible) but I don't want to get burned on something not in running shape or get caught in a bunch of red tape hassle. I really enjoyed the recent podcast with the guy who got a 5ton, but he's a bit braver than me diagnosing and fixing a valve issue.

Originally I was going to get it via GL (government liquidation) but they are getting VERY hard to come by (I have bought from them before though and the process is long but not difficult). Had I gotten it from them they do allow you to preview the items. The only problem with that is that sometimes what you are bidding on is not just down the street and could involve some traveling.
I ended up getting it from a fellow locally that buys and sells them. Found him on Craigslist.
Back to your questions. You are not going to find a M109 for under 3k. Those days are long gone. Anything under 4500 and you are lucky. The A4 (which is NOT multifuel) go for 9k plus at the GL auctions.
Edit to add:
The fellow I got mine from had several for sale so I was able to pick the one I wanted. And yes he still has a couple more if anyone is interested. He made sure I was in good working order before I drove off and even fixed a few little problems that were bugging me.

It has a built in 100a battery charger for when you are hooked up to shore power and an automatic switch if shore power it dropped to transfer to battery power. Way nice unit.

and we have 24v to 110 power up and running.
next up is to wire the inverter into the junction box.

did you use rigid aluminum for the outside pipe? is that LB "form 7"? or did you use pvc?

PVC

PVC
:( hopefully nothing hits it. it may be rigid but metal's WAY better. BUT.....it is also more expensive
-
if anything hits it.. it is also hitting the solar panels.
In fact it will hit the panels first (unless I back up into a cliff face or something)

yeah i was more worried about backing up into something LOL

I don't do much backing up with it as you might imagine. Fun enough going forward. :)

Next on the list in no particular order:
Get new weather seals for the cab (need to order)
Replace windshields (need to order these)
Replace front window on van (actually have that one sitting in the office waiting for me to do it)
Van area lighting (LED)
LED lighting inside the van body
Finish repainting (spray paint for now)
Get more batteries in the van installed and switched for use with the inverter
Plumb up spare fuel tank
Mount ham radio antennas (in a way that won't get them killed by a branch or low bridge)
Charge controller for the solar panels (24v)
Find out why the van heater is not getting fuel
Wish list:
Winch
Upgraded tires
Some type of waste motor oil filtering (BSutter is working on this and I like what he is doing)
LED tail and marker lights
A/C
Rhino line the floor boards in the cab
Back-up camera
Fix roof on the cab (either body shop or get a new one)
I'm sure there is more.. I just can't think of it at the moment.
-
That thing just keeps gettin' better an' better!
Ya gonna put the ZS designation back on it?

I think it would be cool to have a hatch between the cab and the box (van, as you call it). This might take some work, but I think it would have several advantages.
It would probably make the lovely Mrs and the kiddos feel better if you can all talk to each other (without radios) and see each other. You can switch places between front and back while on the move. You can check on them, make sure everyone is okay. Perhaps even take care of things on the move if nature calls. And of course, if you wake up to the zombies knocking on the door, you can hop to the driver's seat without the need to fight your way to the cab. ;D
-
If anyone's interested just saw 2 x M109s in what I would think is decent condition (didn't see them running but was told they run) in Central Oklahoma for $6000-6500. Not sure if that's a good price or not but they looked clean.

CM, check out http://www.accordionboot.com/
I used this to connect the bed and cab of a pickup very successfully (no leaks) back in my big stereo days. As close as the box and cab are on the 109s I bet the extra wide one would make the connection. I would guess you would have to change some of the bracing in the cab and maybe the box to make a crawl space under the box's window and probably under the cab/hard-top joint. It wouldn't be walk-through - more like crawl-through.
I thought about doing the same thing only going up through the roof of the cab into the overhang on the box.

I am leaning that way too. It would be nice to not have to worry about having a sunny day for a couple days and still be able to run the fridge to keep food.

Next up is to get a battery cut off switch so I can choose to run the inverter off of either the truck batteries or the solar set up.

When I was running two batteries in my truck, I used a $20 battery solenoid so I didn't have to run heavy gauge wire to the dash, but could switch it on and off at my leisure for charging or emergency starting.

Suggestion for the cab-to-van connection.
Cut your holes, use steel C-channel to line the holes, but don't weld it into the wall - instead, float it like a panel-in-molding door, only inside out. The channel goes around the cut edge of the metal, and you can tack weld the four sections to the cab, but be ready to grind off the tacks. Then weld the four sections together, grind off the tacks, and you've got a floating frame. Caulk the dickens out of it, and do this on both the van side and the cab side of the jump. Between the two, you can simply slide in a steel box that fits tightly, and either pop rivet it to the two frames and caulk, or tack weld it all the way around.
The C channel and the caulk should direct any rainwater down and around the opening, instead of forcing it to pile up on a flat surface. You could add to that tendency by putting a little "spoiler" on the top rear of the cab, to act, in effect, like flashing, or a roof overhang. Might even be able to find a bug deflector type deal that'd do the trick.
Project's looking ridiculously awesome. I'm currently working on an Yamaha RS250. You could probably strap my BOV to the back of yours and not even notice. Hell, I could probably plug in all my tools, and finish the restoration in the back of your BOV, too!
Keep up the wickedly awesome work.
-
You could find a commercial truck salvage yard and get the rubber boot that goes between the cab and sleeper pretty cheap.

But that would obviate the need to drive over to my place and use my tig welder... and then I wouldn't be able to finagle my way behind the wheel for a beer and burger run... THINK man, THINK!!!!
:P

CMXterra - I couldn't tell in the pic if there was some kind of locking device on the fridge door, but if there isn't and you intend to leave the pavement, I'd suggest adding one so it doesn't swing open when you're crossing uneven terrain.
Looking good overall. Interested to hear how the shake-down camping trip goes.

I found my 220V outlet in my garage.
The hard way.
Almost said goodbye to my 12V battery charger. However, she survived, and so did I, smoke and sparks notwithstanding.
I am rewiring the outlet to a big 3-prong 220-compatible outlet and a box with a cover on it... instead of the standard 2-prong, polarized outlet that's on it now. *facepalm*
Swing by if you want some TIG welding done - I pick up a tank of argon next week. I figure 2-3 hours for fabrication and weatherproofing for your project is a decent estimate. i.e. bring hot dogs, buns, and beer, and we're set.

Fun last couple days.
I got the new windshields put in. (pics to come soon)
Installed a second set of two 12v batteries for a total of 4 (2 series + 2 parallel)

LOL! I do believe it has. Just pick up a couple boxes on the way home and leave them on the passenger seat. Then if she complains you can just say "you said if there is boxed wine I can get it." Then walk away. Lol

With the windows open I did not have any fear of cooking back there as there was plenty of air movement. At night it was not stuffy (again plenty of air movement). I really need to do a week long base camp style camp to see how it all works out. I also think I need more solar on the roof as after two days (one of which was cloudy) I was getting a little low on juice. So I figure two more panels would make it charge up faster on the sunny days.
This was just a short overnight trip and I have already started a list of things I need to add to the truck. Good learning experience.
-
Might want to put one of those battery powered carbon-monoxide monitors in the sleeping area, just in case. Similarly, a small fan blowing out the window could go a long way toward keeping any CO build-up to a minimum.
Awesome to see it go from project to working vehicle now! :)

Adding more panels may or may not make a difference on cloudy days. While it would seem that you would get more power, there may be a hitch.
With charge controllers, the output of the solar panels must exceed the nominal battery voltage by about two volts. If there's not quite enough voltage to charge on a cloudy day (let's say it's only 11 volts on a 12 volt system) adding more of "not enough voltage" won't help.
With the right charger controller, panels may be wired in series, yielding a higher input voltage. Let's say two panels were put in series, twice the voltage of what's there now. On a cloudy day, our hypothetical case would have 22 volts coming in (instead off 11), which is plenty to charge, trickle, or float the batteries.
If a standard PWM charge controller would accommodate the higher input voltage, the excess voltage will be dissipated as heat, which is very inefficient. Wired in series, the panels will deliver 1/2 the charge current. A MPPT charge controller, while costing a little more, will convert the excess voltage into useable power (current).
"But, what if I don't want to upgrade my PWM controller?"
There is a "rig-up" way to get around the cloudy day scenario, but you will need to check the max input voltage on your charge controller. If it's several times higher than your solar panel's max output, you could re-wire the panel configuration with a "series/parallel" switch. On sunny days, all the panels would run in "parallel" for maximum current. On a cloudy day, flip the switch so that half the panels would be in series with the other half, doubling the voltage at the expense of getting half the current.

Excellent post, TG. I was unaware of the issue of insufficient voltage relative to the charge controller.

I was just thinking of the added current for the sunny days to help top off the batteries more so than the added voltage for the cloudy days (although on the cloudy days I was still seeing some charging)
-
Generally on cloudy days there is some variation to the solar intensity. If the level is close to the threshold (battery voltage + 2v), there will be times where it is above the +2 threshold and provide a good charge rate, times where it is only slightly above battery voltage and might trickle a little, and times where it falls below battery voltage and charging stops.
Adding panels is good up to the point they exceed the current rating of the charge controller. When that happens, some will do an automatic shutdown, but many cheaper ones just let the magic smoke out.
Try not to let the magic smoke out of any electronic device. As long as the magic smoke stays inside the box, the product will work just fine. But once you see the magic smoke getting loose, it will no longer work properly. I have yet to see anyone get all the magic smoke back into the product where it's like new again.

Here is the Lowes unit
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jXNSDBL9Lxw/TuFp1Q7rXGI/AAAAAAAABwA/B538QEHIzPY/s500/lowes.jpg)
The only thing that bums me out about the Lowes cabinet is that they do not have a five drawer unit that would go with it. I would have to get two of the same.
Speaking as an aircraft mechanic, the BEST toolboxes I have found short of snap-on would actually be Kobalt toolboxes and they can be found at Lowes. They're very well made and very durable, pricewise my personal toolbox which has around 13 drawers and is about 4-5 feet wide for around 700 dollars.

Nikon D300s body and I think I shot that image with the 18-35mm
Post processing using Photomatix
I used a total of 7 images at different exposure to compile the image.

Man, this whole project is just too cool. All these DIY RV projects make me green with envy (olive drab in this case).
A friend of a friend stopped by my 'stead while traveling through in his converted Sprinter van and he'd put in a diesel powered stovetop/heater. He said it was designed for boats and vented outdoors. When you wanted to use it as a heater, you put the lid down, a fan came on and blew across the stovetop. Never a chance that you'd forget to fill the propane tank and be without heat or the ability to cook since you have a full tank anytime you travel. He said it was his most expensive addition in his whole conversion, but wow, what a stove!

I took a look at the link above and It is just not correct. All of the 5 ton trucks are labeled 2-1/2 ton, and every price for any item is 150.00. The price thing I can understand, it is an auction, who knows where the price will settle in.
I am slowly returning to the land of the living.

I saw in a previous post that you referred to AC install. Was that air conditioner? How did you do that?
Thanks! Enjoying this thread tremendously. I think that I may be picking one of these up shortly. Believe it or not, a guy has one for sale in the neighborhood. Gave me the chance to actually see 1st hand the size and space you are working with inside and out.
Thanks,

No Air conditioning.. but I do have 110 alternating current (AC) in the back now
But air conditioning would be a nice addition.

How difficult would that be to do now with some of the small units on the market?

I just stumbled upon a unit that might work. It a PetCool (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CFMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thermassure3.com%2F&ei=HODpT7KrMoWk9ATD8cDEDQ&usg=AFQjCNFddbgwvKV2vmUOMJAYmlcZyiw5xQ) - a external unit for a pet for AC and heat - The put out about 2500 btus. I've seen them in some of the custom tiny travel trailers.
-
thats a nice little unit but def too small btu wise for the Landmaster2 Extreme. the avg human puts out about 400 btus plus moisture, you'd need atleast 8,000btu to make up for the people and equipment on board not to mention heat load if its in the sun, ever better with 12,500btu for a roof mount RV style from coleman or a quality Delongi 12k portable if you have room inside to store it. to give you an idea of the capacity of the automotive ac system an 70-80s gm car with R-12 and a 3.75 pound charge could put out almost 36,000btus of cooling power just something to think about in sizing ac units

Little update time.
I replaced the rear brake/turn lights with LED replacements. I also picked up (but have not replaced) some new panels for the roof. Switching out the 4 90w 12v panels for 2 236w 24v panels. It will be a nice bump in power.

Just found this thread. Very jealous. Home boss gave the green light as soon as pay off debt, I can get one, maybe just her way to motivate me more. Great posting and progress. All the things I wanted to do! Still have a while until I get my own, but making a project book of all the ideas I like and how people did them. Definitely a thread I will be back for reference. With a family of 6 may need more bunks, or…as bus. Torn between space and ability to go off paved roads when necessary.

yup cmxterra, if you're low on blinker fluid you better check your Frabastat valve before it leaks on the muffler bearings and they seize up

Next on the list is to remove the 4 90w solar panels and replace them with the 2 225w solar panels. And while up there put a nice thick coating of roof sealant.

These are considerably larger than the 90w 12v panels I have up there now.

that looks like a lot of potential power!

What are the dimensions of those panels? Sorry, no perspective in the picture. Looks to be about 32 x 50 or so but I'm just guessing. ;D

We live in the area, and would love to come see it. Also, it would be nice to meet like minded people. From looking at the posts, your skill set is similar to mine. Love the truck!

Advantages are less rotational mass up front when not in all wheel drive which should equal slightly better gas mileage. It also makes it MUCH easier to turn the wheel at slower speeds.

I did not know you could do that.. wow.... good to know.

good job! brought abck military service memories too.
I would like to coomment on 2 things
Regarding the spare tire....should you have it in the trailer? what if you ditch it or leave it at a campsite to run errants?
How about putting the spare on the cabin roof?
I was dissapointed when you repalced the headlights with the LED ones.
unless the LEDs in them are high CRiI (high collor rendition) ones... you will be missing alot of color rendition, depth recognition and driving in fog will be harder too. It is all about the high color temp of the LEDs (starting from 5500K and going up)

The spare tires are anything but light. putting them on the cab roof is a no go. Seeing as they are dual in the back if by chance I lost a rear I could still make it back to base. If I lost a front I would just take one off the rear.
The LED are the drop in .mil replacements that they are putting on all the new vehicles. I can see farther with them then I could the failure prone filament bulbs that it came with. I agree with the fog comment and have been looking into finding yellow filters that can fit on the aux lights.

I see on the tire.....
I did not knwo that the US mil is retrofitting lights with LEDs.....

Much better vibration resistance and much longer service life. Combine that with multiple elements that are not prone to single point failure you have a superior product.

they have 2 sizes 140mm and 170mm polycarbonate lenses for their lights, you could make a spring wire clip or holder to attach it to the lamp and pop em on when you need them

I will see tomorrow how fast that will get the batteries back up to snuff. If not fast enough then I am already working on how to throw the other 225w panel up there. Now that would be a major upgrade from 180w to 450w.

All I can say is that I want to be like you when I grow up. Seriously though, you have done an awesome job and are a true inspiration to a guy who could only dream of having such a cool vehicle. Keep up the great work and keep posting those great pics. Thanks.

Ok, I think I missed something here. You took down 4 - 90 watt pannels and replaced them with 1 - 225 watt pannel? How will going down from 360 watts to 225 watts charge your batteries faster?
-

90w panels were 12v.
So you had to series two of them together to get 24v. When you do that the watts do not change but the voltage doubles. So with 4 panels I was only getting 180w @ 24v.
Now this one panel is 225w @ 24v. So I gain 45w.

From what BSutter has told me though is that the 8-10MPG is loaded or unloaded.. So you know from the tank size that you can cover x number of miles... or idle for so long. That is unless you use the furnace (you removed I believe) or have a leak.

After the first full day of having both panels up there I can report that even with running the fridge non stop (and part of yesterday and today were totally cloudy) that the panels can keep the batteries at full charge. I imagine that even if I have several days of total clouds that the panels will be able to get the batteries topped off in no time.

Nah, I'm in the market myself for one. I just bought three 275w panels this summer and have yet to put them up because I haven't saved enough pennies for the charge controller or battery bank I want. So, I'm just gathering all the information I can along the way.

Scored a NIB Sony rear view camera from a Best Buy that is closing in the area for 18 bucks. And it is the nice made in Japan one not the crappy made in China. Regular price of 129. It is just the camera but i can wire it into the TV and it will make an awesome camera to see who is outside the van body. Woot.

Griz,
It looks like you're in the Spokane area. I don't know where cmxterra's supplier is, but I would doubt that you'd want to drive an M109 from the Minnesota area to Washington.
Have you tried? http://www.idahomotorpool.com/ (http://www.idahomotorpool.com/)
They may not have one in, but they get them pretty frequently, and Fruitland is considerably closer.

Is there any chance that this thing can drink veggie oil to help offset the fuel cost?

Updates on the solar/ battery/ inverter
The truck was sitting for about a month with the fridge running 24/7 to test out the system.
Seems I ran into a little snag. The truck where it is parked, I discovered, is partially shaded by some evergreens. Oops
When I went to work on the truck some the battery bank was down to about 40%. Took three days (two partly cloudy and one cloudy) to get the battery bank back up to 100%
So even with the crappy angle of the sun (we are at the 45th parallel) the system was able to catch back up rather quick. I'm sure it would have been quicker had the panels been pointed more toward the sun rather than just flat on the roof.
-
Good to hear it's working even under less than idea climatic conditions.

I can get it hauled for less than a grand, probably closer to $500 if time is not an issue. I have moved vehicles from Wasington to MN for as low as $200, and frm AZ to MN for $300 and back for the same.
One came on a truck that had a huge part for the space shuttle, a 65 tbird that we dropped at a farm with a loading dock. Came with as wide load and a military escort. Just needs to be drivable. It takes me about a month to move stuff cheap around the states. I have gotten cars in 2 days, and also 30 days. But, the price is right.

I wonder if you could implement a system which would allow you to tilt the panels. I'm picturing a collapsible frame upon which the panels are mounted. This frame could be tilted in either direction. Titling it, of course, could advertise your panels on the top and you may not want to risk it for fear of theft or vandalism. But it might be a nice feature should you find yourself in remote areas. Don't mind my armchair, hindsight contributions. I like your BOV. Job Well Done.

My guess would be a heater of some sort. This is an inline pump to grab a heat source (such as coolant). The pot gets hot and you pull air through the pot for warm air. Not sure....just a guess.

it is a waste oil centrifuge designed to clean used motor oil (and other oils) and cleans it to fuel grade.
Time to place the empty 25 gallon barrels at the local shop to collect used motor oil for fuel. :D

that's pretty cool

I figure I can get the waste oil for about .50c a gallon (or less) and with diesel selling for over 4.00 a gallon it is quite the savings.

So, that's super cool. How many gallons of waste oil do you required to harvest a gallon of diesel fuel? I know of a neighbor who has a sign at the end of his driveway stating that he takes used motor oil. I always figured that he uses it for heating.

a gallon of waste oil.. makes a gallon of fuel :-)
Centrifuge just gets the crap out of the oil so as to not clog up your fuel filter.
Edit to add. It also gets the water out.

I'm sure you just used that tabletop to take the picture cmxterra. It just shocked me when I saw the grain mill in the background. My initial thought was, "OMG is he processing waste oil on the same table he prepares food!"
:o
Really great set up! I'm going to try to get the same set up when I get my "Army truck". I don't know if the 6.5 diesel I have now would run it very well.

CMX - Why did you opt for a external system versus a system mounted on the truck. Bsutter has one mounted to the frame rail of his and it works on the fly...
I'm sure there is a reason.. Pro / Con for either setup.

Bills just keeps the oil in the crankcase clean. Mine processes waste oil to fuel. I don't think there is a provision to allow him to filter waste oil to use as fuel on his as there is no outside source to spin the thing up other than oil pressure so his has to stay on the truck.
-
My only concern (possibly unfounded) of using engine oil for daily-use fuel is, the additives. Apecifically, the ones added to make the oil resistant to burning. I've heard (my wife is young, so it can't be her tale), it causes a substantial amount of gunky build-up over time. Are you concerned about this issue, CMX?
I wouldn't hesitate a second to burn it in my '91 IDI if I were short of fuel pennies, or all the way up to SHTF. Hell, that's why I bought the truck I did!! I use outboard 2-stroke to supplement my fuel, and add a little lubricity to the acetone-smelling crap they're peddling as diesel nowadays...

Not sure where my original response to this went.. so let me see if I can fish it out of my brain again.
There are many in the Military Vehicle community that run some level of used motor oil in their trucks and have been doing so for years with no ill effects. So I am not really concerned. Especially since I do not plan to run 100% used oil.

That is one of the things that Bill and I talked about when I was up visiting.. Thought is that straight oil is to thick - even when heated could cause 'issues'.. so cut in a percentage with diesel, gas, etc and it'll change the viscosity enough...

Where may I ask did you get the centrifuge from?
I have on 01 F250 7.3L and am interested in getting one also.
Thanks

Tires are getting upgraded
current pattern is on the far right. Upgrading to the pattern on the far left.
Aside from better traction these tires are a bit taller which will increase the top speed by about 5 mph to 60.
Edit to add that I am keeping them as duals in the back.

Are you kidding me? If I know all she has is an AK, I'm good with that. It's the LAW rocket painted like a candy cane that scares the hell out of me. ;)

Have you heard of any problems throwing lugs on those newer style tires? I know it was a while ago, but back in the early 90's we had tons of problems with those styles throwing lugs (Both on the HMMWV's and the Deuces and 5 Tons, we went through so many tires they switched us back to the old style and never changed back until some time after I got out.

These are new tires (still have the nubbies on the tread blocks) and I have not heard of any problems with these in the .mil community.
-
We had them on the deuces and 5 tons, and didn't have issues (not to say they couldn't). Our HMMWVs had the Wrangler ATs.

Are you/have you recalibrated the spedometer? Do these things even have a spedometer?
I mean, I would hate to be speeding and not even know it. ;)

They do have a speedo but I worry more about the RPM's than speed in this thing. I don't think I have ever been on a road that cars were not passing me so speeding is not high on my worry list :)

they are made to go, go anywhere, with anything, but not go fast.

Well, he did say it would do 60 now. Here, if they bust you for speeding in a 20 mph school zone it is a $400 fine. In town, speed limits are generally 35-45 mph. That is a $200 fine.
If you are in a school zone and your spedometer reads 20, but the cop's radar says 22, you are busted.
So, as long as he stays out of active school zones and little towns like Pantego, TX (where the police spend most of their day looking for traffic violations 'cuz there's nothing else to do) he will be fine. ;)

No worries, it's physically impossible to not realize how fast you're going in a deuce. If you're going 60mph, that bad boy will be absolutely SCREAMING!! ;D

I managed to get an empty duece up to to about 73 once down a long slight downhill highway in Germany, talk about freakin loud LOL Thought it was gonna come apart at the seems. I've also had one up on 5 wheels before too. Scary cornering job that day. Learned a lesson about keeping her slow in the corners.
Some day I'd love to have one of my own along with a trailer.

Considering how long it takes to get up to the higher speeds I don't have any worries about breaking the speed limits on residential streets. o-60 in 15 minutes

I did some mods. I can get from zero to fifty in thirteen minutes fifteen seconds. Mine tops out at about fifty two. ;)

go ahead and paint a bulleye on the back and get it over with not exactly a low profile vehicle, get out unnoticed, good luck, to big of an attention drawer, first to be searched at a road block,I don't understand the concept behind this kind of BOV. But then again I don't plan on fighting my way out of the city . In a vehicle like that chances are you will, Not exactlly a polar bear in a snow storm , SO WHY this makes no sense
-
I would guess that most folks here don't plan to fight their way out of anywhere unless it's absolutely the last option left and most hope to Bug Out before there is the potential of being locked down in an area they have little hope of escaping.
Regarding a roadblock set up in such a situation, I would think that every vehicle is more than likely going to be searched with the exception of perhaps unicycle, and then don't expect to get waved through with a backpack.
I would estimate that the number of situations where a truck like this would be useful far outnumber the ones in which it might be a detriment.
-
I would tend to agree with Nico, Preppers tend to be a bit more aware of the current situation and would most likely bug out long before things reached that point. (Things don't generally just instantly develop into a lock-down police state). And the most likely scenarios that would require bugging out are weather and natural disasters in which case this would be an ideal vehicle to make the move with.

Like stated above. If you wait till everything is locked down then no matter what you are driving you are going to get the stink eye from anyone you pass.

Like you're going to pass anyone.
I see a lot of situations where an RV-style exodus is ideal. The flexibility of having a primary BOL, but due to unforeseen circumstances (like a road closure due to a severe snow storm, etc.) you have the ability to go in any direction and still have everything you need to be self-supported. A cabin in the woods can get vandalized and a homestead can be in the line of fire from a hurricane.

Driving on radials rather than bias tires feels way different. Turning at slow speeds is about the same but these tires do not whip the steering wheel around when you let go of it. And of course my top speed is now almost 60 MPH. Now I just need a good snow to really get a feel for how much better the traction will be.

I agree with this opinion so much that yesterday I purchased an M109A3. I currently have an M185A3 and am M150A3 trailer. This makes (2) trucks and a trailer in my stable in addition to cars, If I need low profile I have the cars. I prefer Green Iron.
No thread hijack intended, just an update about little old me.

I made an error, my trailer is an M105A3 not an M150A3. Perhaps one day I will become a better proofreader.

Can I visit and drive one? ;D

Sure you may, matter of fact you may accompany me to the Spring Rally in Indiana. You drive one, I will drive the other. :)

Do tell about the Spring Rally. I am here in Indiana and home boss (wife) did say I can have one. There were lots of conditions and stipulations (I somewhat listened) but I can have one. would be nice to go and see all the possibilities.

For people coming over from ZS wondering why I nuked all the pics and info from the message board over there, here is the reason.
Politics are part of prepping as they affect all of us. To not allow us to discuss how the current administration is fucking us over is a dis-service to the prepper community.
FBO = Fk Barack Obama
Anyway. I have processed about 35 gallons of used motor oil and hope to be picking up another hundred gallons to add to my fuel storage.

At this point I am in the process of stocking it with food and other goods so there is less time needed to get it rolling. Planning several camping trips this summer with it to work out any bugs I might find and to see what supplies I need to put in it to make it more "complete"
-
THAT is a beautiful sight!! Badd ass squared!!!
-
Damn it!!! Now I'm going to have to get one!!
-
Changed the oil today. Installed the rear camera..
Pics to follow.
-
I was actually thinking about your rig yesterday. I missed the snow pics before.. have you gone camping in it yet?
Cedar
-
So here we go.
5.5 gallons of oil. Two filters and the bonus is I can filter the oil and use it as fuel.
draining it to the 35 gallon bucket
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-WqY9AF8RqcY/UcHaU0j0kxI/AAAAAAAAFs0/7YVQwHSYPMQ/s912/IMAGE_1627C93D-57E6-4F97-BC42-AFD10D3296EC.JPG)
one filter off and getting ready to refill with new oil
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6Y5fUmVGVbY/UcHaWkdwwkI/AAAAAAAAFs8/Bzo3mklQJo8/s720/IMAGE_2259733F-BF19-4EED-8497-17E1A1CAE64D.JPG)
Might have to come up with a better way of getting the oil in there as lifting a 5 gallon bucket and not spilling (even with a funnel) is challenging
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-VWEu79q9NaA/UcHaYsyl36I/AAAAAAAAFtE/5mnHR0L3Fho/s912/IMAGE_33ADCABB-1FA9-46E2-A517-7DABD21D5F8E.JPG)
oil is in and about to put on the second oil filter
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--OlBBts4udA/UcHaaaEF_fI/AAAAAAAAFtM/5tj0BxwecAo/s912/IMAGE_DAE28052-A0D5-4622-9C22-C46BF8865AD2.JPG)
Got everything buttoned up and she runs great.
-
Drilled the hole on the exhaust fan. It was the easiest place to mount the camera with the least number of problems.
Hole on the inside for the cable to pass.
Got the camera installed. I used rivets to attach the mount. Not shown is the hole sealed up.
Monitor on the inside of the van. I need to get a splitter so I can also use it in the cab. That and I have to get 12v up there.
Right now the wiring is a bit of a mess and I have yet to wire in a switch to activate it. So for now I have to manually connect the system to one of the 12v batteries I keep back there.
Good field of view and should work for both backing up and for seeing who might be around the back while camping.

Towbar. Works for either the 2.5 or 5 ton trucks. Might be worth my while to see what would be needed to get it modded so I can hook up a civvy car or truck to the back of the M109.

Both
Camera is a Nikon D700
The lens for those two images is the awesome made from magic Nikon 14-24 2.8
Post production depends on how I shot the images. The two above are a combination of 3 different frames shot at different exposures to capture the light range (commonly called HDR photography)
-
i love the tires in the last once. they look unreal.

Interesting effects, that picture looks like it was from a manufacture of puzzles...or one of those desktop backgrounds that come with the OS . . that make the photo look more real than real life.

I don't run strait used oil. I use a mixture of diesel, used motor oil and whatever half empty can of ATF or whatever I find in the garage.

I have BOV envy too. I was told when we get property I get to have one. Happening next spring!! Yeah me. After listening to the BOV podcast a while back the two guys made me stop and think. How available are parts? how easy is it to find parts if I really needed them? I have a buddy who has like 4 deuce's, we actually nicknamed him deuce, but two of them are mainly parts trucks, and two were running trucks. He bought the parts trucks because it was the easiest way to get extra parts.
A family member loves to tinker with cars and trucks, and wife said I could build my own BOV with his help, if I wanted, however I wanted. so now I am torn. She has no idea what I have come up with in my head. Part tractor, part truck, part RV.
CMX how hard is it to find parts for your BOV? How hard would it be if there was no access to internet or shipping?

Part Tractor, truck, RV ? I'm interested in what you come up with.. could be a interesting and fun build.
As for my thoughts on getting parts post internet and shipping? Good luck. I would think that damn near anything and most likely everything will be difficult to get much less find post internet and you can almost forget shipping.
I would think that the best options is to get it before you need it. Or you'll have to do without. I could however be wrong.

I have access to two sources locally for bigger parts (injector pump, compressor. engine if I REALLY need it etc) and other parts like filters I can get at NAPA. That said I do have on hand a few parts that I just keep on hand. I have a spare alternator and voltage regulator.
All in all there are not many parts on these trucks that could fail to leave you stuck.
There are two fuel pumps. An electrical and and mechanical. Once running there are not any real need for any sort of electrical part (and you can roll start them)

i was going to say, how the hell do you roll start something that big? park it on a mountain side facing down?

I did that on the 4th of July because I wanted to be quiet leaving the house. Rolled half way down the street and just put it in 2nd and slipped the clutch. Nice and sort of quiet

I don't need much grade when I start in in low range and first gear

Well she did not leave me on the side of the road.
Drove over 768 miles doing a rally this past weekend. On the way home about 3 hours from home I started hearing a chattering noise when I coasted in 5th gear. (now I bet it was making noise under throttle too but I just could not hear it)
Today got out there to look into the transmission (about 15 minutes to get eyes on it) found this.
Yup.. Red Neck transmission. Missing some teeth.
I am going to swap in a "new" one and rebuild this one so that I have a spare.
Good Good truck for getting me home with that much missing on the gear.
-
Ouch. Good truck.

if it's not too much trouble i'd love to see pics of the repair/replacement process.

Sorry to hear about the transmission trouble. At least she got you home safe.

That she did. And a testament to how robust the transmission is to still function with that much damage to a gear ring.

I'll see what I can do. :)

i can make your life/my request easy... i only was asking for plain jane point and shoot pics, you don't need to pull out your pocket hubble telescope and shoot the same shot five different times using eight different light filters in order to catch the infrared sun rays at the apex of their celestial journey to the solar panels no the roof of your BOV... just saying ;)

Point & shoot? Not sure he knows how to do that! ;D

Well I picked up the replacement transmission.
Tomorrow the work begins.
And I will use my Iphone to take the pics. As close to point and shoot as I can get :P

I did a couple other things like transfer the clutch linkage from the old transmission to the new one and filled the new one with fresh oil.
And that ends the excitement for day one. Will have to wait till Thursday for the swap. I have a photoshoot tomorrow and after that going to see Grumpy Cat at the internet film festival at the MN state fair.

I'm going to look at it. Clutch can't be that old and is still pulling strong.

thanks for the pics!

It was getting dark so I just did a quick test to see if I needed to adjust the clutch. Started her up and she went right into first with no grinding. Drove her around the block this morning and I am calling this repair DONE.
-
nice. that beats my filler neck tube replacement on my truck...
and again, thanks for the pics! i'm starting to take care of all of my vehicle maintenance and seeing stuff like this is a huge motivator. i don't mean this to sound negative, but if you can replace a transmission on a truck that big, i can fix stuff on my little truck. it's all a big set of legos.
-
Good work man! Thanks for sharing. I love seeing this stuff.

Hey Guys and Gals , this is my first post on your site. I found this site , and joined specifically for this perticular thread. I'm considering picking up an M109A3/A4 in the next month or so. This thread pretty much covers exactly what I'd like to do with mine. But ,it seems like the thread has ended ! Was the truck completed ? Did it get sold ? Or did the initial poster just disappear ? What gives ? Thanks ! Also , besides the Govt. auctions , does anyone know a good place to pick up a clean-ish M109A3 or 4 in FL. ? I can't seem to find anything on Craig'slist. I like the ones on C&C equipment. But , they're a little pricey. Idaho Motor poole's trucks look OK. Anyone have any other sites I should check out ? Thanks again.

cmxterra is still alive and kicking, but now he's moved onto this new project right here: http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php?topic=45427.0

I still have her and the build is NEVER done.
In fact now that spring is finally here I am planning on getting her back to the house to do some more work. Replace the J pipe. New starting batteries... it never ends :)
The 109A3's are getting very scarce. I have not seen one on GL in forever and even the ones on Craigslist are few and far between.

Radio truck is the way to go, 99% of the hard work has been done.

Hey guys. Glad to hear you're still at it cm ! If I decide to do the whole prepper RV , than I'll go with an M109. Otherwise , I might just get a bobbed M35A2 or 3. I plan on getting a toyhauler trailer anyway. I could always just sleep in that and just have the " pickup " for fun. Havn't decided yet.
-
Not much to update.
I do have her at the house so I can do some cleaning and a few upgrades/ fixes.
Putting on new windshield wipers and working on some general maintainence

I have always thought one of these are so cool!!! I would love one but how much life do they really have left? also what are the other functions you can stack into something like this? Maybe a tow rig for off road only vehicles? a boat? I dont know just trying to see whats might be a good use of my money when time comes and I am able to spend some on something cool like this.

Life left? It only had 12k miles on it when I got it. Motor is not even fully broken in at 12,000 miles. So plenty of life. Towing is not a problem. It just does not get there fast.

good to know all that! yea I am not to worried about getting one then so long as I can buy it in cash

Most of the vehicles you're getting from DRMS nowadays are the remnants from reserve/NG units, and stock rotation from PREPO and national stockpile. The vast majority of these guys were run long enough to make sure they function, used for a little skills training, and a hundred mile or so jaunt to and back from a 3-day off site drill somewhere once a year. Other than weather degradation, they're practically brand new.
I just wish I had the spare money to scoop up an old 939 wrecker, and a 1009!! Won't be long before they're all dried up... :-\
-
Truth about the dried up part. I have not seen a M35A2 or M109A3 at auction for quite a while.

Those 1998 Stewart & Stevenson M1079 LMTV 4x4 Van Truck's look way nice. Sort of Expedition Vehicle looking.
The opening bid for the humvee's is 10 g's
too steep for me.

So, on the way home, did you notice the sensation of the road in front of you just "opening up"? No one daring to cut you off in traffic? People accelerating or changing lanes to make room for the camo creature in their rear view mirror?
;D
I've driven these back in the day, in the Army. People really DO get out of your way- it's quite noticeable lol
Nice Rig!! I love the style of yours with the box & windows. I've never seen one like that!
