Radiation Sickness - Being Prepared

Radiation Sickness - Be Prepared

Our prayers go out to those suffering as a result of the devastating earthquake/tsunami and now nuclear disaster in Japan. Japan understood and prepared for earthquakes like no other nation. And yet we are reminded of the power that can be unleashed by nature.  During the past few days, we have received many calls regarding what can be done in the event of an exposure to radiation.  There is still much uncertainty surrounding the nuclear facilities in Japan as to what the short-term and long-term effects will be.  As a result there is a lot of fear and misinformation being thrown about.

First, understand that a cloud of radiation is not going to float over from Japan like Mothra destroying everything in its path.  Radiation risk to other nations is very low and even the radiation that has been released or could be released should not be able to make it across the Pacific Ocean in any significant or harmful degree.

However, learning what to do in the event of radiation exposure, whether it is a result of repeated TSA screenings, radiation therapy for cancer or a nuclear event is worthwhile.

Radiation Sickness or Radiation Poisoning unfortunately is not uncommon.  There is much that can be done that has proven worthwhile and effective.  One of the nice aspects of natural health is that the methods of care are rarely invasive or carry the potential to cause more harm.  If a loved one of mine were suffering from the effects of exposure to radiation, I would do as many of the following as I was prepared and able to do.

1) Potassium Iodide or Potassium Iodate.  This is a natural tablet or capsule that can be taken as a supplement.  It will block the receptor sites in the thyroid gland in an effort to prevent radioactive particles from affecting this most vulnerable gland.
2) Baking Soda and/or Epsom Salt bath.  Put two cups of either of these in a bath of warm water.  This can help pull the radiation out of the body through the skin.  In a sense, the bath water will then become radioactive, so you will not want to share baths by putting the next kid in after it has been used.  Do this once or multiple times daily as the case may dictate.
3) Detox Powder(also known as Colon Detox Powder)  The clays in this formula have great drawing power and can be used like the Baking Soda bath.  This is a great product to have on hand for many purposes.  Purchase a five pound bag of Detox Powder and receive a second one FREE (while supplies last).
4) Miso soup – those who consumed miso soup after the atomic bombs devastated Japan in World War II fared significantly better than those who did not.  Miso is best purchased as a paste in the refrigerated section of the health food store and can be kept for years in your freezer.  Drink at least one cup daily. Miso soup is delicious.
5) Kombucha is a drink rich in probiotics that can be consumed daily.  It is easy to make once you find a start (called a scobi).  Also naturally fermented vegetables such as homemade sauerkraut is also excellent.  Need a recipe?  Email us and we’ll forward some great probiotics recipes to you.
6) Seaweeds – many of the dietary seaweeds, such as Kelp, Dulse, Irish Moss and Bladderwrack are high in natural iodine and have proven to be very effective in relieving the effects of radiation.  We sell and recommend our Thyroid Formula as a great supplement containing these vital sea “vegetables”.
7) Spirulina and Chlorella are both algae that have shown to be useful in dealing with ionizing radiation.  They can be taken in capsule form or as part of a green drink such as Earth’s Nutrition and Bountiful Blend.
8) We thank our friend Ian “Doc” Shillington, N.D. for his Body Balance Plus Formula that you can make on your own.
He tells us:
The best source of easily absorbable ORGANIC Potassium and Iodine is in my Body Balance+ Formula (Recipe at the bottom of this note).  The main ingredients in the Formula are:  Black Strap Molasses, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Black Walnut Hulls.  Black Strap Molasses is by far the richest source of ORGANIC POTASSIUM.  Black Walnut Hulls are the largest natural source of ORGANIC IODINE.  And Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is one of the best Catalysts known to man so that even those with poor health and lousy digestion can easily absorb it into their systems.
RECIPE for Body Balance Plus
This can be made by mixing & shaking together
2 cups of Organic, Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses
2 cups of Organic, Raw, Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (we like Braggs brand)
3 dropperfuls (about 90-100 drops) of Black Walnut Hull tincture (we like Western Botanicals brand – of course)
Dosage:  2 dropperfuls – taken 3 to 6 times daily as needed.

As with any catastrophe or disaster, it is wise to prepare well in advance and not rely on being able to run to the store for what you need.  Speaking practically, it is better for everyone, if you buy what you may need early so that those who are rushing out at the last minute to get what they need won’t have to compete with you.

As we see from Japan, natural and man-made catastrophes can happen anywhere and at anytime.  We urge you to prepare for your own needs as well as the needs of those you love (who may not be as preparedness minded as you).

A lot of good stuff in your post, herbdoc, especially the parts about miso soup, and such.

However, I just have to disagree with you on the the last part of what I quoted above.

While the radiation will not literally blast the earth like Mothra's bad breath, the radioactive particles can and will (and have) migrated clear across the Pacific Ocean and put in their appearance here in the US.

Just for perspective, about half of California's famous smog originates in China and blows right over. We even get dust from those drought-based Chinese windstorms.

Radioactive particles are being found all over the US now. No amount, BTW, is insignificant, and no amount is harmless.

The problem with, say, Plutonium, is that it can be inhaled and will lodge in the lungs. Then it will slowly irradiate a portion of the lung maybe the size of a large marble, killing tissue and possibly spawning lethal cancers in 10-30 years.

Strontium 90 settles right into the bones and starts killing off blood cells, setting up the body for many kinds of cancer. Especially leukemia.

All that's really bad for young children. They will bear the brunt of the radiation damage.

Exposure to a dispersed particulate is almost impossible to spot without a full body scan after the fact.

The danger is real, and significant. I read an article a while back that indicated Seattle residents had probably vacuumed up at least three Plutonium particles each, and that was in the very early stages of the release.

Hindsight, 30 years from now, will reveal exactly how much the American people were harmed by the Japanese radiation. In the mean time, everyone in the US--and I do mean everyone--should assume they have been contaminated, and follow the procedures you suggest.

It's no harm and no foul if they haven't been contaminated, but the odds are that they have--or soon will be. So they should do whatever they can, while they can.

Moreover, the radiation release is not over, and will continue to grow until the yutzes over there finally get the damage contained. And that will not be soon.

Anti-radiation protocols should be an ongoing part of all of our lives for at least the next 30 years.

Most people can't or won't make that effort. They'll just trust to luck until they win or lose. Or until their kids do.

But then, I guess that's just the way it goes.
