Cascadia 9.2 earthquake: 318 years ago this evening
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:53:00 PM »
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has created a fascinating animation, using their real-time tsunami forecast software, of the probable motion of the 1/26/1700 tsunami wave across the Pacific in the 24 hours following the quake:

Relatively low odds, bit i figured the extra $50 a year for earthquake insurance on my house was worth it.

TED talk from OSU geologist about the "discovery" that the PNW is actually due for a magnitude 9+ earthquake.

https://youtu.be/Iy5a2P3zXl4

He's also featured in this CBS segment:  https://youtu.be/f4l7tHGLgA4

  - On a preparedness scale of 1 to 10 the PNW is maybe a 1.

  - 33% chance the next one hits within 50 years.

  - Minimum 10k deaths, many, many more if the beaches are crowded during tourist season.

It is scary. My eldest lives, practically on the beach, in the tsunami zone from that potential earthquake.  Looks like will need to stay there for the forseeable future, so for now preps are shoes, flashlight, gloves and small go bag under the bed and practice on how to move to higher ground quickly, which will become a little more complicated when they have a child.  There is a lag time of I forget how many minutes, less than 5 I believe to move to higher ground.  SO, feel a big earthquake, need to move quickly, and I reminded them that very likely everything in the house will be on the ground, etc....

Scary stuff, I have read quite a bit of research on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. If an event happens anywhere close to the predictions the PNW will probably take at least a decade to rebuild. Furthermore, believe that we are way behind the power curve on this one and matter how much the citizen of the PNW are warned, they'll continue to choose not to prepare.
