Raised Bed Build ~ 3hrs, $55
« on: December 29, 2008, 04:35:10 PM »
I had some spare time so I decided to put together a raised bed (I have been relying on containers in the past) to be ready for spring planting.

So in summation, it took me 3 hours to build a stupid wooden box - but whatever.

Before picture of the site:

The lumber:

The ends:

Me discovering that I had the wrong screw length:

Almost there:

The finished product:

Now, what did that box of screws ever really do to you?  Oh, the vulgarity!   ;)

Actually, very nice post and documentation of your work.  Thanks for sharing!

Do you guys think it is safe (re: growing vegetables) to put sealant on the wood?  Thanks for the comments.

It's for short term body storage as well...seriously man, these things need to be planned in advance. ;D

I guess you could seal the wood, but I think it would probably be a waste of time.  The dirt is going to be against the wood which is going to hold the moisture right on the wood anyway.  Any type of safe sealant probably isn't going to last long in those conditions.  At least not a sealant that I can think of right off the top of my head.  I think you'd be better off making sure the box is well drained & then replacing a board or two in a few years when they need it.  You'll have gotten your money's worth by then.

I wouldn't use normal wood sealant, I was seriously thinking about trying  wax my self.

I have holes dug, and two bags of lime in the garage. 3 AM is not the time to try and buy lime.  ;D

Paraffin I guess but I dont know. What ever might seal the wood but remain inert and not be ingested by my veggies. I haven't really thought it through yet.

Very nice!  Looks like you'll have to haul in alot of dirt as it doesn't look like you can pull a truck up there.  Good luck and I hope you post the picts of your success.
