Title: Need Some Repurposing Ideas For Rebar Circles
Post by: Calista on March 20, 2011, 08:12:15 PM
So hubby and I found six rebar circles (about three feet in diameter) in a trash heap and couldn't resist the idea of rescuing them for repurposing. So far we've found this rebar log holder design:

Does anyone have other ideas for using these? Thanks!  :)

My wife suggests that these would be excellent hula hoops for sumo wrestlers.

I was thinking they could reinforce something cylindrical, like a round wooden planter.

Or if you bound them together somehow, they could be the skeleton of a small geodesic-ish structure.  (One ring in the middle for the "roof", the other 5 bound to it and to each other for the 5 walls.)

I LOVE scrap rebar! I work at a construction site, and am always looking for rebar to bring home. I like long, straight pieces better, so your circles may pose a challenge. But think about growing vertically. Get some straight pieces to make cages.

Not to tell you something you already know, but make sure you have some #9 tie wire and a good pair of pliers to work with. Sturdy gloves are helpful in saving your hands, and I like to grind the cut edges of the rebar, to save my kids from damage. (I've still got a scar on my arm from college ~ The edges of cut rebar are SHARP!)

You may need to look up some resources on tying. Maybe youtube has videos on "rod-busting"?
