Got Lucky (Remington 597)
« on: June 25, 2015, 04:50:42 PM »
I've been looking to buy my first .22LR and was debating between the Ruger 10/22 and Remington 597. I'm not all for accessorizing my guns, so accessibility to extras wasn't a big deal. Anyways, I liked the fact the Remington 597 had a held the bolt open after the last round. Anyways, I found a heavy barrel 597, with a scope, for $170 at my local gun store! They're going for $250 brand new and this was slightly used. Sorry had to brag!

I really like the 597, I bought one when they first came out and went a little crazy with mine to compete with the 10/22 guys. They are accurate guns the mags sometimes need a little tweaking but they work well enough. If you take it apart make sure you dont over tighten the guide rods, they are suppose to move around a little if you over tighten they can bind the action up. Also get a bunch of ammo and see which one it likes.

I have 5-6 brands of .22LR that I'm going to feed through it next week. I was told, though, that I'll most likely need high velocity rounds to work reliability.

Target rounds definitely cause issues, but standard velocity should work.

I have some of that. I think I'll head to the range tomorrow...probably won't get there today.

I went to the range today and put 6 different types of .22LR through the rifle (about 300 rounds) and had zero misfeeds (that weren't caused by an aftermarket magazine I bought...and will be returned). I used the cheap $3 a box stuff to the $15 a box stuff with about the same performance (the match grade stuff was slightly more accurate, but not noticeable at 75 feet...max range at this indoor range).
