Title: Am I in the right forum - are there many ladies around?
Post by: MissAnthrope Plant Nerd on June 06, 2013, 11:11:19 PM
This forum seems to be very slow - I'm surprised.  Are there not many other females around here?  I feel somewhat dismal looking at the sparse posting dates.  Not very active.  Maybe I'm in the wrong place??  Is there anyone (female and preferably middle-aged like myself) out there?

while i am not a lady, i will say when i first joined i found the forums a little slow as well. i know for a fact there are many women on here. give the forum some time and i think you'll start to get a feel for the pace of it. plus once your post count gets up and you're involved in more threads it really picks up. it's not nearly as upbeat as my other go to forum, but i will say this has become my favorite and most visited one.

There are a lot of women that are active on TSPF. More often than not they're posting in sections and about topics that don't necessarily fall under the category of "Lady Survivors" and might fit better elsewhere.

There are a bunch of us here.  Personally, I stay busy (with not a lot of Internet time) and often do more reading than writing.  But I'll gladly chime in if someone posts a question.

I'm here:) The forum tends to slow down some in the spring (at least for me) because its a busy time for prepping. Gotta get that garden going!

I am also female and here, and like Nic said, mostly we save the Lady's thread for discussion of periods, bras, and childbirth  ;)  But we are all over the other threads as well.  And, like Cheryl said - it is a busy time of year.

one thing i forgot to add about this forum: the quality of the posts are so much better! if i start a thread i usually duplicate it at another forum and i am amazed at how much better/more mature the answers are that i get here.

I am here and I post alot when I am able. But like Cheryl said, it is spring and most forums do slow down. I am generally not around from Spring to Fall but I am finding time in the mornings usually or when I come in for lunch.

I'm here too.  I just tend to hang out on the other threads more.

As far as being middle aged,  I'm 48 but I subscribe to the theory that you're only as old as the man you feel... aw, heck.  I just remembered Jay is 7 years older than me.  So I guess I AM middle aged.  I just don't act like it.

I came here to say that one reason this forum is slow this time of the year is that a lot of people are busy in their gardens, but apparently that point has already been made.

That said, I am not a female, so I was just going to give my $0.02 and walk away.

Woohoo!   Now that we know who is who...let the flirting begin!

Seriously though, the best part about this forum is the wide variety of people;   male/female....old/young....outspoken/reserved.    I've found it "gender neutral" for the most part.   Bottom line, I've never found any other place on the net that folks get along so well.   One would think the diversity would cause more arguments, but it really seems to do the opposite.

I rely on the opinions and info I get here to structure my preparedness, and the female point of view is essential for that.  Particularly because my girlfriend has not bought into this lifestyle as much as I have.  It's more of an "eye rolling" than an "argumentative" attitude, but it helps to read these posts and know that this just isn't a "guy thing".

i think this forum tends to have more mature members, be they young or old. it takes a certain person who desires to be prepared and self sufficient/self reliant.

I was a little hesitant to come to these boards because I was worried there would have racist and sexist attitudes.  I was happy to find they didn't exist.  Besides being clearly open to all races, I'm not finding any of the "Now don't worry your pretty little head, and make sure the beans don't burn..." attitude in any way. Everyone's contribution is valuable.

I had a guy (back when I was a skinny blonde 20-year-old) replace the engine in my '68 VW Bug.  As I drove away, I noticed the oil pressure gauge wasn't working.  I pulled right around and pointed it out.  He actually admitted he disconnected it on purpose.  Why?  "Because you don't need to worry your pretty little head about things like that."

I doubt his hearing ever was the same after I got through with him.

I am old and male and do not post much but do check everyday to see what is being said.  I completely agree with the above posts on the reasoned responses and supportive nature of this forum.

I do not check other forums since finding TSP unless I am after a particular issue which I know I might find elsewhere.

So it may seem slow, but people are otherwise occupied with their lives and preps.

I find most things I ask questions about are answered equally well by men or women so unless I had a specific concern about prepping and being a woman I would generally post in another part of the forum.

And maybe being a bit 'experienced' I don't have the same concerns as some younger women might.

There are more males on the TSP forum than females. I agree with what FrugalFannie said "I find most things I ask questions about are answered equally well by men or women so unless I had a specific concern about prepping and being a woman I would generally post in another part of the forum."

IIRC, I don't think I've ever posted in the Lady Survivors thread. My posts and questions usually fall under another category. Post your remarks, ask your questions - somebody will offer their advice. Another thing, some of the females on this forum have user names that don't specifically identify them as female.

Looking forward to reading your posts!

The "Chuck Norris" is a relatively new thing that a moderator gave me. I have been here two years and from the very beginning I have been 'mis-gendered'. I have always chosen what i think are gender neutral nicks, but apparently they are leaning towards un-feminine anyway. Oh well.. it is fun when people find out I am female.

62 and going strong although the inner child keeps trying to convince me that I'm really 24. I just don't find that  most aspects of prepping are gender specific and so I end up posting wherever I find a subject of interest being discussed.

Yup a girl here too.  Was quite a while the guys thought I was a guy.  While I thought the guys were gals.   ;)  It can be funny that way.  I have so much going on that I am doing more reading here and there.  winter time I can spend more time here.  I also have other places that I frequent that are more relevant to what I am doing at that time.

I think you will find most of the people here very friendly willing to help and genuinely care.  Quite often many are very quick to lend a helping hand to someone in trouble.

Glad to see there are ladies on this forum. Makes me feel better knowing I am not the only female prepper. I am a little over middle age, in my 60's. But we to need to keep up with what's happening to our country and be prepared for the worse of all phases. Hurricanes, tornado's, a collapse of our country, whatever the case may be, we all need to be ready. Hope to be of some help as well as learn a lot from everyone on here.

Oh well.. it is fun when people find out I am female.
Funny story, I was almost placed in a boys dorm during a weekend stay for a college honor band when I was in high school because I accidentally put my (androgynous) nickname on the form. I found this out a year later when I ended up enrolling at the school and talking with the band director.

(KNOCK-KNOCK)

HELLO? ANYBODY HOME?

I believe I have been gone for three months! It is spring and I had a great deal to do!

The garden is now planted and the press-on flooring has been laid in the bathroom. I always HATED the avacado green and gold floor in there but the money has not been there to replace it. Well the money is STILL not there so I went to Home Depot and bought $22 worth of cheap plastic squares and I hope they last for 2 years! The new color looks like black marble instead of avacado and gold from the 70's.

I should be putting up sweet corn next weekend. And, if my watermelons are STILL not up then I need to buy seeds or it will be too late to grow them. DS and I went fishing last week and came home with 2 bluegill which we had with lunch. I had to kill my rooster, which was hard but he hurt himself (his back?) and he could not walk.

We had to put down my son's at due to kidney failure. We tried out a dog but she did not suit us, and so he has replaced her with a kitten. It's a nice little guy who plays with our dog. (The dog we returned was lovely with people but tried to attack the dog 3 times. So she could not stay)

How have you folks been? How is the summer shaping up for you folk?

Glad to have you here, Gam... there are plenty of ladies on this forum. I am probably like a lot of them, though, and spend more time in the sections about food preservation than in the gun section (haha). Just jump right in and don't be afraid to resurrect an old thread. Just search for a topic you have interest in and make comments or ask questions... you'll get helpful answers here.

Welcome!

I look forward to exploring the whole board, but I'd love to talk to other women, esp. woman who are making a transition from urban to rural life, women who are going it alone or are in long-distance relationships, women who are vegetarian/vegan living in a farming community...if any of those sound familiar, please feel free to be in touch!  :)

Welcome!  I'm still living in the city (ugh) and a meat eater (though I'm leaning more toward pescatarian the older I get) but it's all good.  You'll find a lot of amazing people here that treat each other right and are a treasure trove of information.

Yes... Welcome! Wish you good luck on your transition... there is a lot of good stuff on here in the old threads... just use a search on any topic and don't be afraid to resurrect a thread that is an old one... we like to revisit that old stuff, too.

Thanks, everybody. I'm going to do some reading through past discussions and will throw some comments/questions on old topics!
