Police officer trainee in gunbattle to get Medal of Valor

Seeing this in my local news reminded me of a recent conversation I had with one of my fellow gun-nut doctor friends (we are a rather rare and closeted breed, speaking in whispers about such things when in professional company) regarding this officer's training.  This is the first news report I've seen that has listed the trainee's name, due to previous concerns for his safety.

This shootout happened a year ago, while Pesquera was being trained by Garcia and had less than two months experience in the field.

These officers are San Bernardino City Police, which has serious money issues since the city declared bankruptcy three years ago, so bear in mind that training funds might not be all they should be.  In a nut shell, the two officers rolled up on 4 or 5 guys at 2am in the bad part of town and Garcia took a (I believe from a short barrel AK) round to the head.  Amazingly, Pesquera, the trainee, was able to return fire, kill the shooter, and get medical aid to his training officer in time to save his life.  News reports are praising the recruit's police training, but my friend heard from the trainee's parents that they attribute their son's Front Sight training, done on his own time and dime, as the real reason he was able to keep his wits about him and get the job done under fire.

I can't find any evidence at Front Sight to verify this claim, but I have no reason to doubt my friend, he's more dialed into this stuff than I am.

Good for him and if he did go to Front Site, good on him for taking the initiative.

This is correct. I am a member of Front Sight.   This link has the details:
