There is a community for knitters & crocheters! It's called Ravelry, and you can find it here: http://www.ravelry.com/

There are thousands of patterns (a good portion of them are free) there, as well as personal tips and tricks for people who have worked those patterns, and tons of pics of different versions of the patterns done by different members of ravelry.

If you get over there, do a people search for "sister wolf" and add me as your friend!

Im on ravelry but I dont make too much use of the forums due to how they are moderated. Its a long and convoluted story but They gave me the impression that you were welcome to an opinion as long as it was thiers.

I don't use the forum at all. I'm there to get patterns and to show off projects and to organize myself. That's all I use it for.

I just joined - Now I need to actually learn how to knit. The only thing I've done is crochet crooked dishrags an a really horrid hat, urm basket ah... thingy dingy...

Look on you-tube for "how to cast on with continental knitting". Then here on this board (needles and strings) you'll find a thread with a bunch of knitting lingo explained. Then you just find yourself a free pattern on ravelry and voila! You knit!

you'll find TONS of vids. Believe me, I wish I were in Maine so I could teach ya myself. It's so much fun.

Continental is the only way I can cast on. If you're looking for free patterns to download Lion Brand Yarn has a ton of free patterns for knit and crochet. I'm going to check out ravelry now.

Ravelry has thousands of free patterns. They list all of Lion's patterns, and a ton of others. Just limit your searches to "free" and you'll find tons and tons of stuff.

Oh Sister Wolf - Thank you! I'm stalking you-tube as I type. Also; I found the group sections on Ravelry and there is a local shop within 20 minutes of my house. Now to rummage around in my craft room for those needles I have laying about.

Good luck to all beginners. Alot of knitting, crochet,etc. is just a matter of alot of practice to develop the kinetic memory. I'm the lesser seen left handed crafter but I offer my assistance to anyone with any questions. I am in the Dallas,TX area and have a line on a number of knitting groups meeting throughout the week if anyone wants to meet them.

SurvivorStudent: I'm also a left-handed crafter. Learning to knit was much easier to me than learning to crochet, simply due to knitting's ambidextrous nature.

I'm the same as you guys - I tend to check in on 2 or 3 groups every once in a while and make a few comments, but I'm mostly about the patterns.

Actually, I found Needles and Strings by searching the forums for "Ravelry". Figured this might be a good place to check out.

I love Ravelry's index of patterns. It's pretty much my go-to source when I need something new. There are lots of independent designers and I would never be able to get their patterns otherwise. I also love it to keep track of my projects. I don't use it as much as I used to though since I recently learned to spin and weave and that takes up more of my time than knitting.

I would. I'm not comfortable having my real name (or my specific employer, for that matter) out there in forums. I tend to use the same 2 basic formats for any forum ID I may have, so if people want to find me from forum to forum they can. But if they want to find me in real life, it's a little harder. To be honest, it's still not hard, just harder.
