I've been metal detecting for years. It's a fun hobby, but few actually make enough finds to cover the cost of their equipment.
While I still have visions of that 'Big Find', I mostly use mine in conjunction with my interest in local history to search for coins and relics from the lost or little known sites.
I do get the occasional request to find lost jewelry or objects when people find out I have a detector.

Yes, most are hobbyiests and do it for fun.  LJR's fee is 150 AUD (~100 USD) for two hours.  People are very willing to pay that to recover jewelry worth thousands not to mention the sentimental value.  Very reasonable in my opinion. And, of corse, there is the youtube monetization. So that probably turns it into a "free hobby".
