I had a 15 dollar pair made out of rubber and it looks like cut off nails embedded in the rubber. It seems some of the spikes have fallen out.

I've been using these this winter.
Not sure if they are heirloom quality, but they work well. Don't walk on your hardwood floor with them.

as far as long term goes, you might look into a dedicated pair of boots with these screwed into the soles head down.

i have been using these
http://www.icespike.com/
for three years now. hiking, construction and walking dog. we have slate sidewalks in town and these have been life savers. cheap and they don't damage shoes, but don't walk on the hardwood or vinyl floors.
i used Yak-Traks and other cleats with rubber on them and they all failed after 10-100 miles hiking.
i add

for more extreme hikes
