Fish traps (or katiska as we call them)

(1/1)

Mielikki:
I think fish traps are one of the best ways to get fish either in normal conditions or if you absolutely have to after SHTF. They require almost no effort, they keep fish fresh and once you find a sweet spot to place them into, they provide you with more fish you can eat or store reasonably and because how they are built, you can let the extra fish go unharmed.

In here we use stuff like this (the traditional model):

And this is what one of those can catch in a day during summer:

And during winter:

You can build one by yourself, it is like a cage for fish. You just need a bit of chickenfence , steel wire for the frame and assembly and a lake to throw it into. It will be a good idea to build a sort of hatch for easy collecting of fish, but it is not neccessary. You position it so that the part where fish swim in is pointing at the shore, throw it in, and come back to take a look in the morning and in the evening. Best place is to put it is somewhere close to rocks, reeds or places where fish seek shelter of food. If you want, you can use baits inside, and get predatory fish that way, but then you usually get just one (he eats everything smaller than himself). The eyesize of the chickenwire will determine the size of the fish (small ones can freely swim in and out) but if some fish you really don't like to eat gets in and is big enough to not to get out, you can just release it, they don't get themselves caught in the chickewire like they do in a net.

There are several models available commercially, but older guys like to invent their own models, tailored for the fish they like to eat, how much they want and so on. There are instructions on how to build one in the internet, but the ones I found were written in finnish. If anyone is interested building one, I could translate something to get you started, but I think I have covered all the neccessary stuff already :P

Hei Mielikki, kiitos paljon apuasi ja neuvoasi.  Voin puhua hieman suomea, sitten kirjoittaisit URL nettisivua millä on käyttöohjea.  Se olisi todella kiva.  Jos en ymmärrä mitään sitten ehkä voin soitella sinulle :P
Kiitos
Yystävällinen terveisin :)

p.s. just asking for those URLs and practising :)
