How to build a wind generator
batfire:
OK, didn't see much in the area of how to build a wind generator in your garage on the blog so thought I would put out some info I have found. I will include the video and the source from which he gets his parts.

Those look like standard car alternators on that website. Can these be used to charge batteries? It works in my truck, why not in my shed?

Wind turbines are usually (?) used to charge your battery bank. There isn't usually a steady wind to supply the power to whatever you need it for. There are some plans floating around that use a standard alternator.
I've been digging into micro wind power for a while. There's some good info out there. Here's a page on building a savonius rotor to power a driveway gate.
Here's another page on using an alternator to charge batteries. Not a wind powered page, but still useful information.

Car alternators are a bad idea for a wind turbine. They don't achieve the a usable voltage until they are at a high RPM. Your truck motor can spin that thing far faster than the wind ever will.
