Discounted big box fruit trees

This time of year the big box stores have trees half off.  I've not gotten the space for the orchard expansion cleared of weed trees and eastern red cedars.  And, best laid plans to the contrary, work and other projects suggest it will be autumn, or even next spring before I'd be ready to put them in their spots.

Any point to getting some and leaving them in their pots in the back yard until we're ready? If so, any tips for survivability?

I've heard of people planting the pot in the ground.  That way they don't require as much watering as if they are left in the pot above ground.  Either way, they will require attention to make sure they don't dry out.
