Norfolk area now represented! Hello to all! My husband, two kids (17 yr old daughter and 11 yr old son), and I just returned from a 2-week vacation, and, as I won't be employed outside the home for the remainder of the summer (at least), I've decided to start participating on the SPF. I've been an enthusiastic listener since October of 2008 and have enjoyed the forum from the sidelines since its beginning.
An observation about this great state we call home--Returning from Yellowstone via Hwy 20 across northern Nebraska really helped put in perspective (again) for me how much of "out-state" Nebraska there is and how for people living in (especially) extreme rural areas, preparedness is already a way of life--it has to be--no reasonable person is going to make the 100+ mile round-trip for a gallon of milk, and a winter storm could leave one stranded until spring thaw. Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but for me it was a profound reminder of the differing mentalities in this country and how fortunate I feel to be living in a region where there are people who still live the good life without the conveniences that so many of us take for granted.
