Great article! At the bottom there is a list of discount bulk grocers from around the country.

Unfortunately the closest one to me is 2 hours away!

+1, paintballborg! I found a local store and was able to call and get the hours of operation for a local store near me. I started a thread in my region (TX) and will follow up after I get to visit.

Great way to add to the preps and save a dollar or two.

I'm a bit leery of grocery outlet being in the list. It's okay, but highly random and not always quite the level of lots you can find in the really big warehouse ones.

Still, for those who aren't seeing anything on the list nearby, grocery outlet is a widespread outfit- we have one just 14 miles away from where we are now (that will go up to 45 miles when we move this summer) and our "local" one isn't on the list.

After having visited the local store here, I think you do have to be quite wary when shopping there. Many of the foods were being sold long after their expiration date. There are some good bargains... just be careful.

We sell some stuff to a place like these at work. They have all kinds of out dated and otherwise distressed products. However they also sell perfectly good items as well. We actually only sell them one item, basically a pallet at a time. You can buy this item at the bargain place for less than we sell it to the club stores. Notice I didn't say less than you can buy it at the club stores, but actually less than it costs the store to buy.
So, the point is, there are real bargains at places like this.

I saw that too and found one about half an hour from us. The store itself was a very sad, falling apart kinda place.

The deal were very good, they are best a week or two after a major holiday, during the summer, not so much.
It's never the same twice so you should go often. You do have to pick and choose.

That was a nice article. As to the expiration date I have to be honest when I say no matter where I shop I look at the expiration date.

The Grocery outlet stores that there is only one listed for WA is an understatement, they are everywhere.

But, like others have said, you need to make sure that you know what you are buying. There are a lot of name brand items that are close to the expiration dates, of those many are perfectly usable well after that time. "Best By" does not mean that it has gone bad in the can.

Do be weary of the off brand stuff, you never know exactly what you are going to wind up with. If you stick with the name brands that you recognize, there are some great deals to be found. We frequent the chain exactly for that reason.

As with all things, YMMV.

Yep, love the one by my house. My favorite thing to do is walk through and find the most outdated stuff. Some stuff is barely in date, some just out of date, other stuff so out of date it is funny. (Found 3 year old turkey ham, and 2 year shrimp!)

I wish I had one of the good ones by me.

A great prepping store I found in Southern California is called honeyville farms. They also have an online store, but when I went to look at the online store prices are 3 times as much as they are in the store itself. I will just be making the short drive to the store to buy it has been a great resource for me. I have also been impressed with the 99cent store. You can find some good deals there. Not all of them are but if you take your time and look around you can get great deals on some stuff.

We have a locally owned salvage shop in our town. Mostly it's just junk, but I've gotten handwarmers (Oxygen absorbers!) 6/$1 , kleenex with expired coupons on the packaging for 50 cents/box (bought everything they had) and organic tomato paste with whacked out labels and an expiration date 2 years out. Fun place to wander around.

Have been to several of those. Lots of expired items, and the price is many times not much cheaper so be mindful of.
