Archers 15,000 new girlfriends... I have BEES!!!
« on: April 26, 2009, 02:26:02 PM »
I have my swarm moved into my hive box and all setup. The move went well, the bees were quite calm during the move of the frames from the small, tmp hive to the larger, perm hive.

Here's a link to the pictures:

Edit: If anyone has questions, let me know!

Grats man! Except for being little socialists, bees are the coolest things on more than 4 legs.

Long as they produce that sweet, sweet honey - they can have any form of government they want.  God bless those little communists!  :D

Hmm, maybe more like communists, everyone gets the same except the queen and the drones.. the queen is just the egg layer, if she fails to produce the workers will replace her. if the drones are not needed or times are hard they throw them out. and if a bee is sick or injured they throw it out of the hive.

Great stuff! When I get a bigger place, I am definitely going to have to look into bee keeping. Bat boxes always seemed cool too.

Was the colony <$1000 to set up?

Here are my costs (so far):
Deep Hive, frames, foundation, head veil, liquid smoke, gloves (starter package from local shop) $226.24
Entrance Feeder (local shop) $14.39
2nd deep super, frames, foundation, $2 for honey candy (yum!) (local shop)$69.83

My gear was stolen, so I had to buy gear again. grr.
Hobbyist pullover, goat skin gloves (betterbees.com)   $73.34
Epi-Pen (kaiser) $45.00

So total cost: ~$425

Bat boxes would be cool. Have to look up plans.

Do you live in a neighborhood or is it a rural area with neighbors?

The hive is at my mom's place since she has almost an acre of land and is more rural. I think I could have it at my house, but the wife/kids would not be the happiest... And I want to get a 2nd colony going.

Very Cool Archer!  What will be the primary source of the honey (clover or specific flowers)?  What's with the cans that the table legs are in?  Anti Ant device?

Congrats!  BP

Thanks BP!
Right now the forage is just whatever is growing around in the hills. The cans contain clean motor oil to keep the ants away (and it seems to weed out the stupid bees who don't know enough to keep out of motor oil). Hmm, might have to make a cover for the cans to keep the stupid bees out...

Well, first you need to get a little bee suit.. then get a large can. then you sit on the front opening with a sign that says 'got mites, cannot work, honey please?'

There are several ways to get the honey, you can just cut the comb and honey off of the frames, but the main way to get honey is to scratch the caps off, then put it in an extractor (clothes washer sized centrifuge) and spin the honey out.
When the bees fill the current hive box and the 2nd i'll add in a few weeks, i'll add some smaller boxes that will be my honey. any honey in the main boxes are theirs. So maybe 4-6 months from now I'll start collecting honey.

and Thanks sneauxb!

and being the little bolshevikkies they are, they will probly feed you for a long time with that gig!  Or sting you a lot.  Or maybe both.

Is there anything you have to do for the winter time? put them in an enclosed area? add heat?

In colder climates hives can be wrapped with black, heat absorbing pads to help keep the bees from freezing. My wife's dad used to winter his bees in his basement. I've been informed that if I try that (if I had a basement) I'd be living on the street with the bees.

Just curious about the epi-pen... is that a standard thing for beekeepers to keep around? Or are you allergic to stings? Love the pics and getting to hear about the project! +1 for you!

The BeeGuild I belong to recommends it for yourself and possible other people around the hive. My mentor has kept bees for 8 years. Never had a problem getting stung until last year when he had a strong reaction. Now he carries and Epi-pen with him all the time and wears a full body bee suit.
I am not allergic, I had myself tested last year and I was stung as a kid several times.
I have my blog @ http://journeytogreenerpastures.blogspot.com/, I post updated on my quest for new skills as well as Beekeeping.
