Can you use your own bags for this or do you need proprietary bags?

You can use your own bags.  They come with two rolls of the bags that you can home-make with the food saver, but you could just as easily use the mylar bags that potato chips usually come in.  Or you could cut the top off of ziplock bags and use those. 

the one The Wilderness bought for us is awesome.  We've used it to save marshmallows, reseal chip bags, save a couple of dinners, store dried raviolini in (it also comes with a couple of canisters, and the hose to suck out all the air), and I've put home made bread in a couple of bags and sealed them in without crushing them (that takes a little practice, though ).

I whole-heartedly recommend these puppies to anybody and everybody!

Not a bad deal for the price.  Just be  ware that you need to keep the liquid from being sucked into the pump during operation.  that's the big killer of vac sealers.

Now, if we can just find a decent source for rolls of bag material.  Food saver double roll s of 11" material is $20.00 up here in the northeast !

Food Saver arrived today in a gigantic box.  Haven't had a chance to test it out yet since I was playing with other toys tonight.  Anyway, will report back when I do.

have you all looked at the Seal a Meal units?

I bought a VS240 model at a Big Lots for $32 and it works GREAT!!!


big lots also sells the deni freshlok for $22 but its kinda crappy.

I got a VS106 for Christmas. It has worked for me to seal up my venison summer sausage I put in the freezer. I also hit a pound of bread yeast I opened and poured some into my little yeast jar.

I wonder what the difference is in the models? Mine is just a sealer with an accessory port and hose, no other accessories. Yours?

mine has the same plus it has a spot in the back for a roll of bags and has a cutter. also it came with 3 containers too.

A question to the food saver brainwashed masses          Just kidding. So how good is this for long term storage for a year or more? Also is thing strong enough to seal clothing flat for B.O.B’s?

Walmart had a good price on the bags.  It of course had their name on it but was pretty much the same stuff.

Ok decided to store one bucket of rice untell I get a food saver. The other 2 will be used for upside down tomatos.
