I agree with Hellboy. I've got a buddy who's local law enforcement, He says they get calls all the time about people doing open carry. They are required to respond even though it's legal. Most of the time it's just some guy who's been hunting and hasn't removed his side arm before going into Lowe's or the gas station. They have to show up and talk to the guy for a second then go fill out a report. Drives him wild, but it's part of the job to hold the publics hand.

Hey everyone, I'm moving back to the Fredricksburg area, out near Colonial Beach. I won't be moving up there till after March.
-
wv northern panhandle here .
-
Grew up in Mecklenburg county, lived in Farmville, Evergreen (a post office and train station between Farmville and Appomattox), and now have a majority of my family down near Lynchburg. I am up in Charles Town, WV right now but plan Lynchburg as my rally point should things get interesting this year... We have about 150 acres of land down in Mecklenburg county, plus some 'relative'ly owned areas in Charlotte County. I am expecting those areas to be much safer than the tristate area when people get hungry enough to get brave.

Va beach here.

Va beach here also.

Va Beach ! Open Carry 80 %, and CCW 20 %. Here are some good sites, WWW.open carry.org, and WWW.VCDL.org

HF is only a hop skip and jump from me (15mi). Hiding in the woods along the AT, it's nice but traffic busy during hiking season. Lots of traffic on one of the shortest sections of the AT there is. Lots of folks hike this part to say "I hiked the AT".
Local KOA is just a city park with campers: Nice, but crowded and expensive.
There are a few small and primitive places west of I-81, but lack the trails.
-
Hey all. Im a newbie to the site. I figure Id introduce my self in this post since it will be my home.
Grew up and live in Richmond
-
I'm in Tidewater. I'm up in Richmond a lot. Two more like minded folk in Richmond that are off-line.
-
This post is the closest to my neck of the woods, I'm near the Farmville area. And yeah I was at that gun show and the long line but I looked for myself and didn't see me! It must have been the earlier time, I was there about 11:30 that day, the line was the same length.

Not off hand, we do have a few nice gun shops in the area, two in Keysville right off of hwy 360. They will tell you if any other dealer has any if they don't.

arms reach, whoa, I just moved from Fairfax on Courthouse Dr, across the street from city hall
About the get together, I just moved to Maryland a month ago, but I'd be interested in a get together since I consider myself a Virginian, and I'm in the area often.

Might as well chime in: hailing from the Frederick/Shenandoah county area.

-
From Virginia here. Anyone do open carry?
Only CCW. Although legal, many of the recent legal issues have kept me from wanting to walk around open carrying my .45.
-
Currently, we live in West Alexandria near Annandale, in a place called Lincolnia.
However, last September, we purchased 45 acres (half pasture) near Brandy Station in Culpeper County. As soon as we can make the 1924 house habitable (literally), we (wife, two year old, and 5 German Shepherd dogs) are all relocating. We hope by Summer, but that may be too optimistic.
(My wife wanted the place for Schutzhund training, and I wanted a homestead. It's a happy compromise, even if I'll have to be out the door by 5AM to commute back to DC. My wife currently commutes down 95 to Fredericksburg - so she's very pleased).
P.S. If you drive though that neck of the woods and notice a nice 1959 Massey Ferguson 65 sitting near a beat up old farm house . . . . that's us (or will be).

I must request that I be no longer considered on Virginia's illustrious shore. I have left this Great Southern state which has been home to my family since 1641.
You can take me out of Virginia, but you'll never take Virginia from me.
I sorely miss her.
-
No freaking way!
Why'd you leave!!!???
-
I ask myself that every day.
Short answer is BOL is in a different state and I've moved closer to it so that I can more easily get it ready. Nothing wrong with where I'm at; I just have Virginia in my veins. Big difference between here and home.

New member here. Richmond area

I've been in Va. for all of my 42 years. Parts of my family have been here since 1607. Can't wait to leave. Currently, family committments keep me here for a few more years. Gotta get to flyover country. I've figured out that everyplace within 200 miles of the ocean (Atlantic or Pacific) sucks. The salt air does somethign that puts a chip on people's shoulders and causes the governments to be overbearing. I would settle for the Shenendoah Valley, though. It's far enough away from the coast. All my hatred aside, I surely understand General Lee fighting for Virginia. Also, we can badmouth Virginia, but some SOB from somewhere else better keep his mouth shut.
-
Damn straight!
Btw - when are we going to grab coffee?
I feel like the Virginia Outcast.
Cool guns, lots of tools, but nobody wants to come and play.
*sniffle*
How's everyone holding up with the snow?
-
How about definately this week. Tues, Wed. or Thursday, about 5 o'clock? You name the place.
We have 11.5 inches here and still falling. Power is still on, so that's a bonus!
-
Woke up at the crack of noon (stayed up till 5 am reading "Under the Dome") to find a foot of snow here in the Star City.. looked out my window and found that one of my neighbors had used his snowblower to clear my driveway. How cool is that? Power is on, and I'm warm and toasty, listening to ep #367. I think later a little video game action, then moving around my preps a little and cleaning a few weapons. Who doesn't love being snowed in??
-
Is there anybody out there interested in a Richmond meet-n-greet? Obviously not in the next couple of days but just looking to see if there's an interests.
-
I go to richmond every 6-10 weeks with my grandmother - she sees a primary care physician at MCV. Wouldn't mind grabbing some coffee at the hospital or nearby, or some ice cream at the sandston deli.
Freaking awesome food.
-
Jim3 - I'm up for Richmond on a weekend. I live in New Kent and commute to Hampton Roads every day, but I'm much more conncect to the Richmond area. Sandston Deli is a good spot for me as well.

I'm up for a Richmond meet

One part of my family goes back to the 1600's... Another part has been living in the same part of VA for about 15000 years.
And I can hear the South Boston speedway cars from my moms house. I will be at VIR on the weekend of August 7th. If anybody else will, let me know.
-
15,000 years! Now that is FFV (First Families of Virginia). And my grandmother thought she was something because she was in the Jamestown Society ;)
That's pretty cool. Most folks don't realize there were humans here that far back. My dad found a couple arrowheads in his field that the Va. Historical Society dated to 5-10,000 years.
-
Patriot here, checking in from Fredericksburg, Va.. just saying howdy.. live off of Rte. 3 West. Close to Riverbend HS.

Charlottesville here. Family is in Lynchburg - that is my planned BOL. Anyone else in the Cville area?
Lynchburg is our family get-out-of-dodge meetup if we have to leave Northern Va. I went to Lynchburg College so I know the area pretty well. Good place to "hide."
frosty
-
I'm interested to know why it's a good place to hide. Does it have anything to do with Falwell's church or his university? Or something else altogether?
-
Demographics and density.
-
I'm in Southwest Virginia, Abingdon to be more precise.
-
Newly transplanted to the greater Richmond area from Long Island, New York seeking a lower cost of living and better quality of life.
I'm renting now but am looking to buy at least 6 acres in Chesterfield County as my homestead where I plan on building a greenhouse with aquaponics and employing other permaculture principles around the property. Hoping to get this off the ground with the next year or so.
Would love to network with my fellow preppers around here!
-
petersburg, been here on and off for two years still own home in tenn, work brought me out this way, and I OC .45 1911 makes the bad guys think twice. have hade no prob.

Think twice about Chesterfield - becoming more and more urbanized with high taxes and government oversite. Check out Charles City, King William, Amelia, maybe the counties south of Chesterfield. I grew up in Henrico and Hanover, now in New Kent, and wishing I was in Gloucester. The spread grows constantly.
-
You can always buy a barge and anchor it out in the chesapeake. Only about 40K for a used one - cheaper than the same sized piece of suburban real estate. :-p
Also - goat - we still need to grab coffee.
Anyone else in hampton roads that's up for a get-together, I have some work to do on my smithy, but a cup of hot chocolate and a 2500 degree charcoal fire should warm things up nicely for a hammer-in.
-
I'm new here, from Weyers Cave, VA (near Harrisonburg), originally from Winchester.

Welcome.
I can only imagine what you're stuffing into that cave... :-p

Yorktown, VA. I have live in the Hampton roads area for eight years after leaving SC. I miss the woods!
Whoa. I grew up in Yorktown. Right across 17 from the battlefields. That's awesome. '
I now spend my time up in Loudoun county, near Oatlands plantation, after almost 15 years in side the beltway (Arlington/DC).
Charlottesville here. Family is in Lynchburg - that is my planned BOL. Anyone else in the Cville area?
My long term (next 5 years) is looking to get as much land as I can down around C-ville or slightly south. Maybe Louisa, not sure. Depends on the missus ;)
-
I spend some time out in Louisa off Rt33 from time to time,.. nice area. I can see if I can find some property out there if ya need... Knowing people in the area that know the roads and the 'back lots' is helpful.
-
"Barford", Lancaster County
yes, I'm a Carter ;)
I live just south of one of your family's ancestral homes (Oatlands)
George Carter at least. one of the six kids who each got a property from their father in the late 1700s/early 1800s.

Thanks! The missus is on a 2 - 3 year leave-the-beltway plan. We'll see if I can speed that up, but she is in charge :) We did see some things looking around various realty sites that were old federal style houses on 20 or so acres that looked beautiful. I'd rather get another 0 after "20" but I need to win the lottery first I think :)
-
Whoa. I grew up in Yorktown. Right across 17 from the battlefields. That's awesome.
I grew up right down the road from the Battlefields across the highway from Harwood Mills Reservoir and back in what used to be woods and wetlands. I miss me some Joe & Mima's Pizza!

Woodbridge / Dumfries area here. I'm new to the whole prepping thing but I've always been interested! (First post!)
CCW, don't want the attention. I could go for an open carry luncheon though.
I'd really enjoy a get together to meet my local like minded survivalists!
-
Still there. :) We swing by for targets or ammo on occasion when heading over to Lafayette gun club.
Haven't actually been in for a long time, but I drove past yesterday on the way to the range. Yay for getting my membership in July instead of waiting... Orientation fee goes up 100 bucks today!
-
Howdy! My husband and I live out in the woods down by the river on a few acres in Louisa County. Moved to VA in 2004 from the St Louis area.

I'm in Richmond, but I am originally from Tazwell County.
I'm relatively new to prepping.
-
I'm in Martinsville.

I'm a new member living in Chalottesville. I skimmed through the responses but didn't see anyone else in my area. Would really like to connect with other VA preppers.

Hi drwho, I live in Louisa county also. I was wondering, have I seen those chickens before? Maybe on PCOV????? That pic sure looks familiar. ;D. I belong to PVOC my chicks are 10 weeks old now.

Shenadoah Valley area here.

Jenlala, and Drwho I'm in your general area as I'm outside of Richmond now and will be buying some acreage west of the city in 2012.
Drwho, if your name refers to the TV show I think it's a very well-written program.
I'm eager to get like-minded individuals in our area together and work on networking and community building.
I'm sure we all have areas of expertise as well as skills and strengths that could be mutually beneficial.
Anyone else in the area with like feelings please give me a holler!
-
I'm in Beaverdam, Hanover County. We moved here from Fredericksburg this summer, finally on our rural 10 acres with no HOA for miles! I credit Ron Paul and Jack for giving us the motivation and know-how to exit suburbia.
-
Checking in here from Midlothian (just SW of Richmond)
Moved here about a year and a half ago from Tampa FL - veteran of the 2004 Triple Hurricane Fest with no power for 2 weeks - not very pretty.
Still getting used to Virginia, but I am a bit surprised that you have to pay tax on a car you already own each year. What is that about? There is already property tax and income tax here - so why tax my already owned car? Hmmmmm......
Anyway, just wanted to check in - love the site!
-
I'm back onthe forum after a long hiatus with other irons in the fire.
I'm in New Kent, work in Hampton Roads.
Maybe a meet up at the next gun show at the Showplace or Racetrack?

Nice and quiet. I'd shy away from Albemarle, several reasons. Fluvanna or Buckingham counties are where we looked and picked Fluvanna. Only thing I don't care for is the drive to Charlottesville every day.
-
Hey guys, my name is Van and I am 34 years old and live in Newport News, Virginia.
I have been married for almost 3 years now and I have been listening to TSP for almost a year. I finally joined the members support brigade in December and have been trying to catch up to the latest podcast while at work. I have started growing my own garden plants from seed since mid January and I am waiting for march/April timeframe to plant them in our raised bed garden this spring. We have a 55gallon drum setup as a rain barrel to water our garden and we have started buying some food grade buckets for food storage. My wife is starting to come on board with being prepared for our future and we are looking at investing in a berkey water filter system soon. Well I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello and I am looking forward to learning even more on the forums. Thanks and God Bless.
Anyone else in the Hampton Roads area?
Van
-
*waves*
Hampton here.
PM me sometime, Van.
-
I might have to move to the Richmond area. I've never even set foot in Virginia so any information you all can provide me with about Richmond and the surrounding area would be greatly appreciated.
We are planning to vacation in June and see how we like it around Richmond so any ideas about stuff to see and do withing a few hours drive would be a great start.
Thanks!
-
Try for West End or Henrico County... Short Pump ain't too terrible either - a straight shot down Broad Street and you're in the heart of Richmond proper in 20 minutes. Stay away from the Fan, VCU, and for god's sake, don't pick a residence within walking distance of Hull Street Road anywhere near the Island. Immediately across the james river (which is about 500 feet across at that point) you've got some wonderful townhomes and live-aboves and a decently low crime rate - and Virginia is an open-carry state, and it's easy to get a concealed permit, so rock out with your heat out.
I'd be happy to meet up with you if you're in town for a while - I'm about 70 miles east in Hampton, but I travel up there frequently and know some folks that can help show you around.
Definitely try the irish pub, Sine's (like... Shinea's). Epic, EPIC food. And not a horrible section of town. That's down in Shockoe slip/shockoe bottom. Stay away from there for residential stuff, since it's prone to flooding. Everyone's used to it, so they just have dyed concrete floors they can hose off out into the street, and reopen a day later. Southern ingeneuity at it's best. ::)
-
Hey, thanks for the response. We are definitely going to be looking around the west part of town as the wife's job would be over there. I've been digging into crime rates by zip code, school quality, and such things and looking at prefered areas we could possibly live in.
First step we decided on a family vacation. We are going to orient ourselves for a few days in Richmond area then head to Williamsburg for family fun. Just a week to get the flavor of the area before we dive into the details of moving.
The chances are very good we will be in VA before the end of the year. My wife likes to push forward with these things once she sets her mind to it. I suspect I'll be in VA several times in the next couple months...
I would love to meet up with you on one of my return trips to the area. So you live in the Hampton area, is there any good sport fishing out of there? I lived within smell of the Pacific most of my life and miss ocean fishing lol.
-
Hello all.
The Mrs. and I purchased some great land in Patrick County. I am intersted in meeting some TSPers in this area. We currently reside in Charlotte. Please do not hold that against us. With God's Grace and Will we will someday (sooner rather than later) be permanent residents.
Looking to continue to learn, share knowledge and network.

Patrick or Patrick Henry?
I have some family out towards Lawrenceville, Buckingham, Charlotte Courthouse, and Alta Vista. I hit Richmond every few months, and run around Hampton Roads like it's my back yard.
Feel free to network more directly, and we can work out a meetup or two.

Hi all,
I live in Northern VA, work in Maryland. Been prepping this past year and its overwhelming how much there is to learn. I'm hoping to learn from other TSP listeners, maybe even from the same area, as I personally don't know a single other prepper, especially among my peers/age group. I'm 23 a few years out of college trying to take a realistic approach to all this.

Nokesville here. Work in Woodbridge.

Hello, live in Stafford and work in Falls Church/Arlington.
-
Nokesville here. Work in Woodbridge.
Nice I lived in Woodbridge last year till September of this year. Just off of Minneville. Moved to Louisiana and haven't looked back.
I'll actually be up in Fredericksburg the first week of December for work. My parents live there as well so I'll be staying there. I telecommute for my position in Tysons Corner. Used to commute from Woodbridge, and then Fredericksburg up to Tysons every day. Fun.
Glad I moved.
-
That great you escaped from "here", still plugging away not able to telecommute, but that's awesome your able to make that happen. Have many friends in the greater NoLa area, most that live there enjoy that location over NoVa.

The driving force was that my wife got a job with chevron down here. Coming into my job it was my intent to make myself indispensable. I even wrote that on this like just starting review sheet. It also helped that the company has great leadership and have common sense. Its one of the reasons I took the job. Combination of luck and serious hard work and now that I am disadvantaged because I'm not on site and can't listen to the customer's suggestions on a regular basis, I force myself to work just a wee bit harder.
I didn't know how I was going to like this place, but all I can say after living all over the country, I think I like this place best. If Northern Virginia was cut off from Virginia I think I'd like Virginia best. Unfortunately its kind of a lost cause blue state now since it has been gobbled up by the Federal Capital.

trjg,
What do you mean by "gobbled up by the Federal Capital"?
I grew up in NOVA and over the years have been moving southward as urban sprawl has consumed every remote area I have tried to call home,
my last and most likely final move was to the agricultural county of Orange Va 100 miles south of NOVA (Not Our Virginia).
By viewing the election results for the state by county you'll see that the the county's of Prince William, Fairfax & Loudoun had strong Dem support.
Prince William has a large Latino population that I'm sure all turned out to vote for their savior (probably more than once using different ID)
Fairfax has a large Asian population along with numerous federal workers who want to keep their unproductive jobs that I'm sure also all turned out to vote for their savior.
I don't know what the hell is up with Loudoun I guess being the highest income county in the nation the majority are probably overpaid fed workers as well.

I know Virginia and NOVA quite well now. I've lived in Fredericksburg, Blacksburg, Virginia Beach, Manassas, and Woodbridge. I've worked in Virginia Beach, Arlington and in Tysons Corner. Everything you've said is what I've heard. I know orange very well for having never lived there since I've driven through it at least a few hundred or so times. Love driving through it, except that damn 25 mile an hour road that is at the intersection of 20 and 15. God its annoying. I used to buy meats at the farmer's market in Fredericksburg (very nice by the way) from this family that has their farm in Orange. My Audi broke down in Orange one time and had to wait like 2 hours for somebody to pick met up.
What do I mean about the gobbled up? Washington, DC has completely taken over not only the entire North of the state, but now is capable of essentially dictating the entire policies of the state. Every dollar that exists in Northern Virginia is essentially derived from the federal purse. I tried explaining to this chick at one of my contract jobs that she (and I) didn't pay any taxes. Needless to say she didn't want to hear any of that. (Government contractors don't pay taxes, they shuffle the same taxed productivity back to the gubbmnt)
Without a doubt the best place in Virginia (in my opinion) is South Western Virginia (minus roanoke).
-
We tend to like things here in Southwest Virginia.
Northern Virginia's proximity to Washington D.C. is part of the reason it receives such a large sum in salaries and wages paid by the government. It's not only that, though. The state receives 12% of the total of The Department of Defense's procurement spending and is home to 20+ military bases including NS Norfolk (The Atlantic Fleet), MCB Quantico (US Marine Corps Crossroads, FBI Academy, DEA, etc), Langley AFB and Fort A.P. Hill.

Ya don't forget ol' Virginia Beach. Home of the Navy/Marine Intelligence Training Center and Navy Seals. (Damneck). I know quantico allllll too well. Was a marine there for 7 years.
Where ya at in Virginia? My wife is from blacksburg. Guess I swooped into tech and picked up a townie.

We are relocating for my wifes career. She will be working on the west side. I have no idea where I will be working lol.

Id go for Goochland then. It's a lot more rural than Henrico or Hanover. West end of Henrico is tightly packed population wise and Hanover is more towards the north and east of Henrico which wraps around the city.

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this, if not, would someone please correct me:
All, I'm looking for a partner for a venture into Custom Holsters that lives within 90-120 minutes of Loudoun County, and I wanted to reach out to this community first, before trying to go wider with my search. I won't put all of the details out here... but if anyone is interested in a part time venture to make some side money, and likes working with their hands, I'm willing to chat. Responsibilities etc. are flexible. I had my former partner decide he was no longer interested earlier this year, and I have had some changes in my life that mean i can't run the business completely buy my self.

Did any of you make it to this weekend's gun show near Dulles? I went on Friday and it was a madhouse. Had to park a quarter mile away. Long lines to get in. The longest lines inside the show were for ammo deals -- cases, reloads, etc. One of the ammo vendors was trying to work a deal to sell back their spot for Saturday and Sunday, because they were almost wiped out by Friday at 8. If you were looking for a bargain, I'm going to guess that hunting rifles, hunting shotguns, 19th century guns, and maybe knives were the places to find them. Those were certainly the least crowded booths. I heard one guy complaining about the price of a "tactical" gun, and the vendors honest response: "I know, and yet it will sell.". Complete ARs were $1800-$2500. Yugo SKS's were $449-$499 cash. Mosin Nagant's were $275. Pmags were $40.
The best line I overheard was, "Dude, you just spent a thousand dollars. If you don't buy her something..."

Purchasing 17 acres just outside of Hillsville. It will be the new homestead.

I am highly addicted to high speed internet living in NOVA and looking for a new place live, specifically some place I can get for under 100k with land. I have been looking online around farmville and fredericksburg but was wondering if anyone else had suggestions?
Would like the obvious list of goodies, land (2+ acres), water on property, pref access to well / septic / electricity, etc.
Included link is an interactive broadband map of virginia, note there is very few places with fios >_<

Not sure what would bring me down that way but I'll try to remember the offer! Thanks. I'm probably pretty grounded up here since one of my classes for my master's program this semester is on Saturday! Ugh.

Yeah its not a race. Do alittle bit at a time and don't get discouraged.
-
It is easy to get sidetracked by all of the information. Pick one thing you want to accomplish or do better. If it seems to big then break it down into smaller tasks. Celebrate the little achievements. Try to learn something new everyday. Try to practice a skill every day.
This forum is a great community of people with a vast set of skills and abilities. I am grateful to the person who introduce me and grateful to all of the people I get to learn from every time I am here.
-
Prince William County but am building a place south of Charlottesville. I CCW so no one freaks.
-
If anyone in Northern Virginia is interested in meeting up, let me know. There are several budding "Meet up" groups but their activity is sporadic. Would like to meet, exchange thoughts and share advice.
-
@WB132,
I too am in NOVA and would support a meetup. Perhaps it might be beneficial to be more specific on what sort of meetup you're aiming for, such as meeting up for a meal/fellowship, taking a class as a group, doing an activity, etc.
I for example would definitely show up to any meetup to shoot at a local gun range or someone's private property that's near by. I'm a huge fan of shotgun sports and go shoot trap nearly every weekend that the weather is nice over at the Bull Run Public Shooting Center and anyone is welcome to join me anytime I go.

I have ccw, I don't want the attention.
I'm in the Tidewater, Hampton Roads area... to answer the OPr's question from 2008, lol
As far as open carry, I do every once n awhile more as an exercising of my right to do so.
I carry concealed 4 out of 5 times though. Tough with a Glock 23 but I make it work ;)

Just moved to the Fredericksburg area a couple weeks ago. I have never been real active on the forums, have been active on Zello for 3 or so years. Most of the posts here are a couple years or more older. I imagine some people have moved on and more have moved in. Anyone in the area that would like to get together and teach me some of the local plants, places to hang out, fish maybe hunt, etc. would be appreciated.
-
Another Virginia Beach resident here. Seems like there's enough to come up with some sort of get together.

In Fredericksburg, I don't normally do forums. I'm just wondering if there is anyone in this area?

I moved to central VA away from the coast, flooding, hurricanes, traffic, military bases, crime & now live in Lynchburg.
Very happy with the move & it's been conducive to my prepping too.
No more salty clay soil. I had been trying to garden for years- working the soil etc.. with weak results.
I'm really excited to see how this Spring goes!

Thanks!

I am from the Suffolk area. Wanting to move to my grandparents old homestead in Lynchburg, VA. Need to get away from the military bases around here and yes hurricanes, though we have been very blessed so far on those. To close to ocean as well. Maybe about an hours drive to VA Beach ocean front.
