If you want a good read on Chernobyl I would suggest Midnight in Chernobyl.

I'm about half way through it and need to pick it up form the library again to finish it. It was a very fascinating read and focused a lot on what happened with the events. There's some science/physics in it but it was well presented in 'non-rocket-scientist' language.
