testing for purity

(1/1)

TwoBluesMama:
Hey Berkey Guy - Was telling a friend about the Big Berkey water filter we have and she asked if there was a way to know how pure your water is - especially if you were filtering it out of a lake or stream or some other source.  Is there any kind of test kit for this? Also how do you know you've reached the life of the filter?  Thanks for the help - TBM

Thanks for the questions, there are many different tests that can be done.  You can pickup some of the tests at your local hardware store, I just don't have any that i personally recommend.  You can possibly contact your city, and ask them who tests their water, and then call that company, and ask if they can test your water for free, or hopefully at a nominal price.

There are 2 ways to see when you need to change out the filters:
1. Put some food coloring in the top chamber, and then it should filter it completely out, if it does not, the black berkey elements need to be replaced.
2. The taste of the water does change if the filters are not working correctly.

Also, if the black berkey elements are 2-3 years or older, i would recommend getting a new set.
