I have one of the Gerber hatchets and have used it quite extensively over the last couple years.  Frankly, I never thought it would hold up to what I've put it through, but it's still going strong.  Nicely weighted, the handle flare is perfect for an easy grip, and it's zero maintenance other than sharpening (unlike a wood handle that needs to be refinished every year if it stays outside and needs new wedges from time to time).

I think Jack had one with the knife inside instead of the saw and he worried about it coming out when using it, but it never turned out to be a problem.

It's not nearly the quality of steel that you'll get with a fine woodsman's axe, but for general purpose chopping and cutting, it's a good tool for the money.
