PX-777 VHF vs UHF

(1/1)

Rob, The current radios you carry are VHF, is there a plan to carry the UHF version? What are the differences between UHF and VHF?

Hi Randy,

The VHF version is the only one FCC approved at the moment (and therefore legal to import to the US). It is rumored that the UHF version will be following soon. (MURS is VHF and GMRS/FRS is UHF). With the VHF version you get NOAA weather broadcasts and 2 meter ham radio.

With hand held radios the difference isn't huge but due to the lower frequency VHF it will tend to perform better outdoors. UHF is a higher frequency range and therefore performs better in large buildings, malls, etc.

For a real world example, most forestry agencies, fish and game depts, etc. use VHF and lower frequencies for their communications as they are communicating across outdoor terrain. Urban police, fire, mall security, etc. tend to use UHF and higher frequencies as it will penetrate buildings better.
