After 980 days I guess we can tolerate one reboot.

I started to get the shakes,so I listened to a couple of TSP Podcasts and took a nap....and now it works!!!!
Good work guys!

nap... a good idea.... zzzzzzz

I immediately recognized this as the first step of martial law, donned gas masks, and retreated to my bunker.
Honestly I didn't notice. The page didn't load when I spun up the laptop but I was too busy stripping the stain off my deck to be disappointed.
These things will happen. All things manmade fail from time to time.

Archer and I plan to reboot both of Jack's servers on Monday 1/15/18 some time between 9:45 AM and 12 noon Pacific time.
This will affect
thesurvivalpodcast.com
survivalpodcast.net
grandaddysgun.com
tspwiki.com
walkingtofreedom.com
ninemile.farm
and a few other sites.
Normally this causes only a few minutes of outage, during which you'll receive nothing at all (not even an error message) from the websites hosted on that server. So don't panic. 8)
-
is it time to panic yet? oh wait, i'm not allowed to panic..
-
You may not panic. That's my job.

We'll have a few more minutes of downtime (on the forum only) Tuesday 1/16/18 around 10 AM Pacific. A few people are reporting oddities in their read/unread posts, so I'm going to run some database repair and testing routines. Oughta take 5 or 10 minutes.

Time for another server reboot. Expect several minutes of interrupted service on Tuesday 5/1/18, around 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern.

We're back, and apparently functional.
We just made another little change, in the way that we block the bad guys from accessing us. For the past year we've been using a list of "toxic" IP addresses compiled by a spam-monitoring service. These are sources of 100% evilness, and the list doesn't include any Tor exit nodes or other addresses that are used for some-good/some-bad purposes.
[nerd]We've been blocking this list in .htaccess; starting today we're blocking it in iptables instead.[/nerd]
This ought to make the server run a tiny bit faster. Dunno if the difference will be noticeable.
Let us know if you notice any problems -- I mean, assuming you can find a way to get a message to us. 8)
-
We also updated the kernel.
