Title: Anyone from Arkansas?
Post by: partisan15 on January 03, 2009, 07:12:49 AM
Hey guys, im new. So i was looking through this, and i got to wondering...anyone from Arkansas have any tips on survival in general in our state?
Things like what to include in the BOB, lists of edible plants, hunting seasons, anything?

Head nets and bug repelant are mandatory.  Mosquitoes and chiggers (redbugs) can ruin an outing.

I second the watch for chiggers. you really have to watch out for them. Twice at the range in Ft Smith did I get bitten alive by them suckers

well the only thing i can think of now is that i have two phases to my to go bags, they just got repacked from winter mode.
repacking my bags twice a year gives me a chance to relearn where everything is and to look at exp dates on food.
also change out water and update my med kit for anything i have just shoved in there or used.

Bug repellant is mandatory, also consider Benadryl and Calamine lotion.

Ragnar, what range do you go to in Ft Smith?  I am a member at OFGC.

Might be nice to ahve a meet and greet here locally.  I would love to go some of the other get togethers but work putsw a big damper on that.

Bwachob,
I am also a member at OFGC. I usually shoot all the USPSA matches there, but have not been in a while (got married last week, so that has taken some of my time) But I was planning on going there Sun if the weather holds out (does not look like it). We need to plan a meet up sometime soon

I'm in Garfield, Ar. and the ticks are the worst pest i encounter in the woods around here. i have been told flea colliers around your ankles will help keep them off. i  have not tried this yet but i can see how this might work. i bet keeping one on your BOB will keep bugs out if you put it down while in the woods.

Hey!  I live in the stix just west of Batesville, and want to join the chorus about chiggers.  They will tear you up!  That said, I'm glad I'm here.  A couple of months ago, I was standing on the main drag in Newport, trying to sell a shotgun to a guy in front of his business.  People were walking and driving by, and nobody batted an eye!  And, here's the amazing part, NOBODY CALLED THE COPS!  It was as if owning and possessing firearms was a normal part of life!  GOD, I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

But I still recommend you lay in a good supply of insect repellent as part of your preps.

The flea collar thing will work somewhat.  They stop ticks that have to crawl past them.  Be sure to blouse your boots.  Any that attach themselves above will be glad to go to higher territory.  Thank goodness it is beginning to cool off.  Mosquitos are finally tolerable again.

Bentonville area.  We should try to have some kind of NWA meet and greet or something.  Seems like announcing yourself is great, but I'd sure love to actually meet some of you in person.
Could just be something really simple, anyone up for it?  Any ideas?

Matt the Farmer a meeting would be great. When and where. I have store we could use.
Title: Re: Anyone from Arkansas?
Post by: ozarked on March 08, 2010, 10:27:10 PM
Since we come from all over, we need to pick a central location for a meet-up.  How about the Folk Center at Mt.View?  It is a pretty area and they have picnic areas, or they will arrange for a private area in their dining room for a luncheon.

Another possibility would be somewhere in the Mountain Home area.  Maybe Gaston's.

Maybe Chris70 would let us use his store.  That's assuming he doesn't mind having a bunch of strangers having a party in it.

What are some other ideas?

IIRC, Ozark is just off I-40, so it should be fairly convienient for everyone.  How about a potluck and everybody BYOB?

I'm dealing with some medical issues, so any weekend 20-21 March or later is best for me.  We'll need some specific directions to the meet-up site.

Would also be helpful to get a head count once a date/location is established.

OK, from the feedback I'm getting, Chris70's store, Scotties, in Ozark seems to be agreeable.  He has agreed to provide some simple refreshments (coffee, tea, cookies).  This being our first meeting, I think it wise to keep things simple and limit the meeting to a few hours, say 2 - 4 PM on Sunday 21 March 10.

Chris will need to provide directions, a phone # and his email so we get a head count.  Please let Chris know if you think you can make it.

Any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact either me or Chris.

Hey all, I'm from Fayetteville.  Matt the Farmer, what kind of farming do you do?  I figured I might give a fellow TSPer some business if I get the chance.
Title: Re: Anyone from Arkansas?

perseus-m31,

I'm actually a bit more of a beginning farmer.  I just live by the idea of if you want to be something then claim it.

My wife and I have started farming our .25ish acre yard.  I'm calling it a nano-farm.  Basically we are growing food for a few friends on a subscription/CSA sort of basis, as well as selling at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and hopefully mail-order (dehydrated stuff, like mushrooms), as well as some crafty stuff like fine silver and copper jewelry that I make, clothing and accessories that my wife makes, etc.
I'm trying to apply my systems integration and engineering skills to developing some good products for homesteading like a rainwater management system (solar-powered, cpu/sensor system, collects rainwater, irrigates intelligently, fertilizes via compost tea, etc.).

As far as what we grow, we grow many things but are kind of tailoring to peoples' wants this year since we are now trying to move toward making a living at it.  So, what would you like?  We are actually finalizing that stuff now...

We can/have grown: tomatoes (all types), ground cherries, winter squash, summer squash, potatoes, beans (green, lima, etc.), peas, many varieties of lettuce, spinach, beets, carrots, amaranth, hops (not going too good), mushrooms (oyster, shitake, maitake, etc.), Hot peppers, sweet peppers, bell peppers, onions, eggplant, cabbage, brussels sprouts, sunflowers, most common herbs, raspberries, dewberrries, blueberries, pumpkins, melons, cucumbers, probably many more but I'll stop there.

Oh yeah, working on a podcast/video show too.  Mostly about "scroungineering" which I will explain in the show if I ever get it going.
Anyway, wehat kind of produce do you prefer?  We're in Gravette, by the way...

Well, golly bill gee whiz.  I'm absolutely underwhelmed by the response we received to the solicitation to a meet-up of Arkansas TSPers.  Maybe it was the day of the week or the location. but no one showed any interest.

Let's give it a rest and try again later.  In the meantime, we can enjoy our association here on the TSP Forum.

I will be closing on my house in Monte Ne in 1 week. I will be encountering many firsts with this move, my first well, garden, rain harvesting system, septic/gray water system and I want to set up a shooting range. I need all the help and advice I can get, that being said I would love to host a meeting for local TSP members at my new homestead. anytime will be good for me and everyone is welcome to come if they want, we will need to set a date and i am thinking it can be done casually over a weekend so those coming from futher away can make it a mini vacation and bring RVs or campers/tents and camp on my land or at Horseshoe Bend state park 4mi away on Beaver Lake.

Anyone interested?

I actually saw a mosquitoe trying to rape a blackbird in the delta last year. ;D you might be better off with a shotgun instead of insect repellent.

Well, after being lost for the past year and a half, I'm back on TSP.  Since then plans for the move to south Texas fell through, and I find myself in central Arkansas.  I plan on this being my final spot.  Just bought a nice rural place with 5 acres, a pond and lots of wildlife.  I'm in the Malvern region.  If anyone is in the area and would like to meet up sometime, let me know.  I'm still trying to learn all the areas.

I think that is some type of PO box there. I'm not sure where they are physically located or if they even have a physical address. I got a card from them at a gun show in LR a few months ago. They had a booth and were giving out samples of Wise food. I ordered some things off there web site. Received it ok and got an invite to there workshop/seminar. Me and a buddy from work are going. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Good times. I also plan on going to some of the events at Pinnacle Mountain (http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/pinnaclemountain/events/). They're either free or really cheap. They have Dutch Oven Outdoor Cooking, Water Purification, Survival Skills Weekend, Orienteering Workshop, Fire Building, Wild Edibles, Edible and Medicinal Plants.... plus more. You'll find I'm a cheap bastard so things like this really appeal to me.

Hey Everyone,

I'm Nathan.  We are originally from central Arkansas but have moved away and then moved back several times over the past 13 years.  I went to college in Fayetteville, commissioned as an Infantry Officer, went to the Army for 4 years, and then moved home to Maumelle.  After 5 years with a major retail distribution center, it closed it's doors and I moved with the company to Savannah, GA.  After another two years, we decided to move back home, buy land, focus on preps, and start our own business.

We're living on 10 acres of partial field / partial woods just outside of Cabot.  I'm starting a new business called "Arkansas Armory" in Sherwood

Lunch is going to be at the Golden Corral in NLR at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, Feb 15.  We'll be back in the meeting room.  Everyone is buying their own lunch - just a get-together to meet other like minded people / preppers in the community.  Would love to meet you guys in person!

I'd love to meet with you guys, but my work won't allow for it.  Maybe a future meet will work out for me.  I'm down in the Malvern area, but don't mind a short trip.

Thanks for a great turn-out at Golden Corral yesterday.  We had 10 people there, including a Captain in the NLR PD.  Lots of good discussion about firearms, emergency preps, NLR's emergency planning, and more.  I'll plan another one in March!

All,

I need to warn you about this operation. I ordered something and they never shipped it. When I contacted them 3 months after I ordered (I forgot all about it), I was advised the item was discontinued and they would ship a replacement. I was lied to that the product would ship. After another month, I asked for a refund. I was lied to again that they would credit my paypal account and then lied to that a check was in the mail. After six months of the run around, I just wrote off the $99 as a learning experience.  I can back all this up with emails from them.

My advice would be not to do business with them.

There's no store front but the guy lives in Little Rock. The address on the website is a mailbox at the UPS store. I met him at a workshop he held a few weeks ago.

I got an email back from the owner that sounds like he is going to correct the problem. Keep me posted.

Hey  PrepperJim
I emailed Mike at ineed2prepare.com today inquiring about an order that I placed at the workshop UK just mentioned.
He emailed me back with a ups tracking # showing that I should get my order Monday.
Sorry you had a bad experience, but so far I have no complaints.
I had placed and received 2 previous orders.
Each time took about 5 or 6 weeks to get products.
That seemed like a rather long time but I was told by a couple of different people that it was about normal for these type products.
Good luck

That was from an order you made the day of the workshop RH?

I talked to the owner again to negotiate the refund. Honestly it sounds like a lack of communication of both sides but lets see. The owner said he would comply so lets see what happens.

Just an update PrepperJim has been refunded. I was emailed by the owner of ineed2prepare.com (http://ineed2prepare.com/) this morning and Jim confirmed it. ineed2prepare.com is also sending out free products to make up for the error. I don't believe this was intentional so hopefully there's no bad blood.

Yes UK I ordered the day of the workshop.
I received the order today.
Jan 28th to March 9th.
Not real fast, but like I said in an earlier post, I'm new in the
prepper world so I'm not sure what is considered the "norm"
for products of this kind. I hear that business is booming and some companies are having
trouble keeping up with the demand.

Hey guys, im new. So i was looking through this, and i got to wondering...anyone from Arkansas have any tips on survival in general in our state?
Things like what to include in the BOB, lists of edible plants, hunting seasons, anything?

For a great plant walk consider Sigma 3 (http://"http://survivalschool.us") in Fort Smith. They do it three times a year so you can see the plants in all of thier different stages of growth. They show and discuss about 60 different edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants each time. They also have a great bushcrafting program that culminates in a 5 day Knife only course. Check them out!

Not sure how active this post still is since the last was posted in 2012. But here goes anyway

I am in NWA, where I have been for going on 6 years, started getting into prepping around 2011 but due to a variety of circumstances I am not quite where I would like to be, but we are still trudging along

Hi y'all, guess I missed this post when I joined the TSPF.  My wife and I are in central Arkansas.  We have talked about moving up north ( north Arkansas that is) in a few years but we will see what happens.  We won't be leaving AR though, we love it here.

Hello fellow Arkansan's.
We're located in NWA and have been here since '83.
I've been a LONG time listener, first time forum'er.
I'm looking forward to making some local connections - any interest?
