Editing thread and posts
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:36:06 PM »
Is it possible to edit a topic title that I created and/or posts that I've made?  I see that some people have edited their items, but I don't see an apparent icon anywhere.  Is it a permissions issue or am I missing something?

There should be an edit or modify icon over the top right corner of your post.

I do not see an edit or modify icon. At the top right of my post, I only see an icon for Quote.
I've attached a snapshot. Hopefully it shows up.

Edited:

Ahh, it only shows up after you create/post the post. I can now see it for this post. But I cannot see it on different post. What is the trigger for the Modify icon to not be available?

I can only see the quote button as well... in all of my posts so far.

Haha... well, just like the previous person, I can now see a modify button on the post in which I said I couldn't see them. I checked my previous posts, though, and they still only have a quote button in the top right.

You may have been logged out on your first view, thus the lack of a modify button.  You should make sure you are logged in.

I've logged-out completely and then logged back in, but those original posts are still uneditable.

Honestly, I just want to edit the title of the topic in the Emergency Preparation section:
"Pantry: ready-to-eat vs. prep-needed?"

It's actually turned into more of a discussion on alternate methods of cooking (i.e. electricity is out, what do I do now?).  I wanted to modify the title so that it reflected that.  If a moderator could simply modify the title, I don't see myself needing to edit any other older items.  Going forward I wouldn't have this problem.

Could a mod change the title to:
"Ready-to-Eat vs. Prep-Needed / Alt Cooking Methods"

Thanks.

It's really weird that I'm having the same issue with the modify button. Yes, I am logged in. Some of my posts have the modify button and some don't. There is a post in the Emergency Prep forum concerning the "pounds per bucket" thread. I'd like to edit it to add new information. And again, yes, I know I was logged in when I checked as I just wrote this post.

I find that older posts I cannot come back and modify.

It would appear that if one logs out and then back in they can not modify any previous posts... that's not really cool.

That does not allow a particular post to be kept current as new information becomes available.

Is there any way we can fix this moderator?

Thanks :)

Well, I just went in to the Settings section, and it's supposed to be set so that you can edit your own posts.
I'm not sure why you can't.
I must confer with the others.

This one has me profoundly stumped. I've gone into the Permissions section of the Administration control panel and it says that members are already set to be able to edit their own posts.

This is most frustrating.

OK, I've talked to Jack about the issue, and it's apparently the software, it's supposed to be that way.
It's to keep one member from trying to back pedal and sand bag another by editing prior posts in a thread.
That's from the boss himself.  ;D
If you run into something you want added or need spelling edited, PM me or a moderator and they will mod it for you.

Thanks for looking into this for me and the justification makes pefect sense. Honestly, it kinda sucks though.  As as right now, I don't see as we have that devious kind of a group. Every board that I've visisted allows for editing of posts, all the way back to the beginning. I do realize that this is Jack's board and it's his rules and I appreciate that he has setup this great community.

It it possible to say that once a member hits a certain mark, or preparedness level, that editing of posts becomes available?

My reasoning: I can see a thread about a topic that is a very good reference. Instead of scrolling down and looking at every post within the thread, the original poster, OP, can edit the first post in the thread with the relevant, very current, information and if an individual wants to read thru the entire thread they can do that but if they wanted the informtion only, just read the first post.

I'm not trying to be rude or rock the boat, just trying to put aother perspective on the situation. Heck, I maybe the only one who cares. LOL
Please feel free to PM me if this does not make sense and maybe I can try and explain it better.

Thanks,
Tash

Tash,
your post makes sense.
I can see how that would be a good thing.
I'll have to see what the boss says.
