High desert permaculture

(1/1)

Digger55:
I have some land at 5000 ft that is half pine forest, half high desert (rock, pumice, gravel with underlying rocks).  Want to try growing some trees (nut, fruit), but not sure what would grow up here.  We have about 100 days of nice weather (about mid June thru mid October).  All suggestions are welcomed.

something_feral:
What's your USDA zone? Or, alternately, do you have a ballpark figure for minimum temperatures during a cold-spell up there?

Digger55:
I think we are zone 3 - avg winter cold is 20F, but can get to -10F.  And, to make it interesting, our July temps are up to day high of 98F with nights in 40's F!!!  We figure sheltered raised beds with drip system for vegs - also have mini twisters at times.
