The Californians are talking big because the quake didn't happen here. When there was a 7.2 (about 10 times as strong as the one in VA) last year in Coronado (San Diego), it shook everybody up down here. Didn't hurt anybody seriously, IIRC, but we were concerned about our own.

As for how often quakes happen down here... here's a graph from the last week:



As you can see, central and southern California are pretty much always doing the cha cha.

EDIT: Huh, that's cool. If you reload, it reloads that map and makes it accurate to within a couple of minutes.
