Title: Pyrodex Pellet question
Post by: Jim H on October 13, 2014, 05:32:10 AM
Have a Pyrodex Pellet question for reloaders:

Has anyone tried Pyrodex 44/45 Caliber 30-Grain Pellets in 45 Colt?

Just so this doesn't devolve into a what's better argument, I know smokeless and real BP is better. This is more along the lines of will it work if nothing else is available. Also not real big on the new rules down here on buying BP.

They work fine in a ruger old army with cci caps.  Haven't tried other revolvers or caps.

Sorry.  Missed the "colt" in "45 colt".  I have not tried them in cartridges.  It never even dawned on me to try.  Looking forward to see if anyone else has.

Had some free time tonight so did a little research.  Sure enough, it is being done. Here is a good article with some initial results:  http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammo/ammunition_hodgdon_0728/ (http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammo/ammunition_hodgdon_0728/)  There is also some discussion on SASS forums about having to soak brass in soapy water to get residue off for reloading again.  For some reason the pellet fouling seems tougher to remove than pyrodex powder.  Perhaps a different burn rate?

Thanks for the link, I'll have to look into it!
