Title: Junk silver
Post by: fishjayrofish on April 18, 2010, 06:05:04 PM
I am try to acquire junk silver and I haven't been very successful, or have I? I have purchased $250 worth of half dollar rolls, and I have only found 5 40% and 1 90%. I have also have purchased $100 worth of rolled quarters with no luck finding a pre '64. Any suggestions, or ideas would be helpful.

Thanks, Jay

Not a lot of silver dimes and quarters floating around in circulation any more.  People have gotten to know what they are.

I think you've been really lucky to find those couple of silver halfs.  I never really thought about going through rolls of half dollars.

What I've had luck with is buying pre-64 coins on Ebay.  You do have to shop around and remind yourself not to bid over what the spot price is for the quantity your looking at. has a silver calculator that I have found useful as well for calculating the quantity that is up for auction.  Good Luck !!

I came into some Bicentennial silver proof set's recently (dollar, half dollar, and a quarter).  They're pretty, although only 40% silver.  Anyway, I had no idea what they were worth but glancing at ebay they seem to sell for not much over spot sometimes.  I assume they were so numerous that their only value is the silver.

Ok,  I've read what is here.

Ebay and local coin dealers are good places to get junk silver and coinflation is a good place to determine the value of junk silver.

Are there any other places that are good to get junk silver?

How easy is it to sell once you've got it?

The local coin dealer I frequent is just as happy to buy as he is to sell.
