tips and broadheads

 I have been mostly doing some target practice with field points, but I noticed at the store that broad heads are pretty expensive and the guy said you can only really use them once. I am curious on what the options are for tips and so on and may need to research that. They have these bludgeon points of some kind for small game, and they told me the field points I use for target practice might be good for small game as well.

 I bought some beman carbon arrows on sale last week for $38/dozen. They are regularly $60/dozen so that seemed like a good deal.

 I have 40+ arrows or so now total. I had lost a few, but I have been getting better at not doing that. I bought a shot blocker that is thicker and denser. The other one I had, the arrows started to go through it and it was not a dense material.
I think this damaged some of the feather material by going all the way through.

 This guy gave me an old recurve bow that is about 35 pound pull. It's 3 piece and kind of heavy and long, I haven't really set that up and have been using my compound bow mainly, though I did have a guy order me a string for it. I was thinking of buying arrows for the recurve bow, but it needs feather arrows and there was none of those on sale, so I spent money on the other arrows instead.

Surfivor there are other options besides the single use, expensive three heads to a pack type you see in most archery shops.  It isn't necessary to buy ultra expensive single use heads to have a high quality set up, don't buy into the hype.  It's there to sell you expensive crap & to keep you coming back with more money.

Here are three broadheads & two small game points that I use regularly & they're all multiple use heads.

From left to right...Ribtek broadhead, Stos broadhead, Grizzly broadhead, Ace Hex Head (bunny buster), A .38 shell casing.

I use these on wooden arrows but they can be adapted for use on carbon/aluminum by gluing them to one of these or the short version.

The broadheads are all high carbon steel & can be reused multiple times after resharpening.

The hex heads are available in a screw in version from 3 Rivers Archery or Ace Archery Tackle.  I've done tons of business with both companies & they're both top notch.

I did some google searches on the Ribtek broadhead, Stos broadhead, Grizzly broadheads and they seem to range from about $1.60 a tip to maybe $5 at the most. The ones at the store where like $10 a piece.

 How can I put one of those broadheads on a carbon arrow that has the screw in type of connector ?

on the very bottom of this page they have broadhead adapters for $1 each, maybe that's the way to go ?

I don't understand what 26 grains etc. means or how to tell which ones fit my arrows with which broadheads

Any of the adapters I linked in my first response to you will fit a glue on broadhead & allow you to screw it into a carbon or aluminum arrow.  26 grains means the adapter will weigh 26 grains, that's all.  It has nothing to do with the size of the adapter or the broadhead.  Aluminum adapters weigh less, steel adapters weigh more.  The 26gr. needs to be factored into figuring out what spine arrow you need to shoot out of your bow.

 Sorry, I missed that part, I had just rescanned over it and saw the part on hex heads.

 I'm not sure what a spine arrow is, but I have a 50 or 55 pound compound bow and use carbon beman arrows. If these adapters are all standard sizes, then maybe I should just mail order a dozen of those and some cheap broadheads and give it a try ..

anyone care to comment on some of these screw in broadheads that seem to be cheaper because they are on sale, discontinued etc ..

Eastman terminator titanium - on sale at cabelas for $10 for 3

cabelas fx-3 6 for $24

SGH - small game head 3 for $20

gold tip precision broadheads, marked down to 3 for $12, they where $22 but are discontinued

gold tip gladiator expanding type, marked down to 3 for $10 - discontinued I think

I also saw muzzy which was 6 for $35 and a bunch of cheap ones at wall mart, but the ones at wal mart looked kind of flimsy

some of these you have to assemble them and screw the blades in etc ..

This one would be a decent head for small game.  I can attest to that because I've used a very similar style that will take a beating & not be easily lost because of the spring arms.

The others I won't comment on specifically, but generally stay away from the multiple part assemble yourself type heads.  They won't hold up as well as a single piece, cut on contact type head.  When using traditional equipment cut on contact is a must.  Stay away from broadheads with any type of tip that sticks out separate from a blade.

Single piece, cut on contact type broadheads are like the ones I listed earlier in this thread.

You'll hear different arguments about heads with trocar tips & traditional archery.

In my book they're a no-go.  Trad gear IMO doesn't offer enough speed to make these heads good for much but seriously wounding larger game.  Just my opinion, but it's an opinion based on seeing how these heads hold up & perform.

 So I want to make sure I understand what you mean .. There is replaceable blade broadhead  which when you buy it, it comes in 3 parts .. a tip, a set of blades and a sort of collar. After you put the broadhead together it looks the same as a fixed one piece head and the blade does not move when you shoot it. I saw some people seem to like the muzzy heads which fall into this category.


 The there is the expandable head which the blade moves after you shoot the arrow. I was told those work better with compound bows. I only have 3 of those kind, I have a few of the replaceable blade ones which seem cheaper .. and I have a few fixed ones which don't come apart at all ..

 So the other thing I am curious is if people consider these replaceable blade heads to be horrible or just not as good. I realize people will have different opinions, but I am curious what people think. For me it's a survival thing since I am not a hunter, but am I better off having a few better quality heads or a larger supply of cheaper ones ? I sort of feel like the price of $10 a head is a bit high, or even $7 is kind of high as well, I also wonder if they are a good investment for inflation, that is if there is a high rate of inflation, could broad heads be worth the money to resell them at some point or will people not want to buy a broad head that was designed 5 or 10 years ago when there are newer ones available ?

 In relation to earlier posts, you had mentioned about adapters to make glue on heads work with screw in arrow shafts. No one at the archery places I went to seemed to want to guide me in that direction and I ended up buying the cheaper broadheads , but today I went to the trading post and I wanted to get more arrows, but they had no carbon arrows that would work for my recurve with feathers. I ended up buying 3 wooden arrows and a pencil sharpener like tool with some glue on field points. I asked the guy if the wooden arrows might warp and need to be straighened, but he was like 'nah' .

So, I have one of these:


 I wonder if I could use that to try out a few broadheds. I saw some cheaper shooting blocks at walmart that seem to have a side for broad heads. They had a cheap hay style block for $25 and a bigger block for like $40, I paid like $80 or something for mine.

but the arrows started going right through it. I leave that one at my girlfriends house and set it up the long way for target practice so that I am shooting into the side of it instead of the front.
