This antenna is one of the best command post antennas that works especially well in hills and valleys (where VHF and UHF fail) and it is easy to build and sets up with only one 15 foot support pole and an automatic antenna matcher(OK tuner) to match the antenna to the radio. Check out the links and see hotw to cover ,with HF,from one to 300 plus miles (the forbidden zone) with your HF radio.This is the area that HF does not normally cover and is also the area you,as a prepper,are most interested in communication with.

There are many as 2259 links available ,here are a few to get you started. Many wire length combinations are worth considering and you either want it resonant on 40 and 80 meters or NON RESONANT to take advantage of all bands.
I think 40-60-80 meters are the best options for NVIS within the Ham bands.

Mine was ct to 40 and 80 meters (35 and 68 feet as I recall) but were I to build again...I would go with non resonant wires and an auto matcher at the base of the antenna ,rather than at the radio so as to avoid some loss due to high SWR and coax.

  The remote tuner is a good way to go. I used one for two years until the ants set up house keeping in it. It was 30 feet off the ground too. Oh well. It's back from the MFJ repair shop and if the snow goes away I might put it back outside, this time in a plastic ammo box.
  73 Amateur Radio Magazine had an artical back in 1968 (??) or so. About a German antenna that was like the 2259. I think the numbers on it were 51 and 47 feet for the wire. when feed thru a 4 to 1 balun it was about 50 ohms on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters. When I built one it was 25 ohms thru the balun.  If you go to the web site look for the cover with a drawing of a ham on a tower. Dark colors. The drawing is from a bird eyes view close to the ham looking down.
