What if my tap runs dry?

One good source that many folks forget about is the water heater.
That is assuming you are not running a tankless water heater configuration or hot water is provided outside of your apartment.
I do keep a few older 5 gal water containers in the basement to store water to be used for the toilet.
If I am hard pressed, I do keep a spare toilette seat in the garage along with the necessary lumber to make my own 'outhouse' setup. I had to use that configuration once when the water main broke and there was no water for a few days.

^^^ This. I think that, in a place with pretty good amount of rainfall, collecting rain should go a long way, as long as you have a Berkey or some other method to filter it, or else a means to boil it and filter.
