does it separate after a short while?
Mine does, and I do not know if it should. (I used ATF type 3 I have for my car)

Probably about like water and oil. The lighter of the two will rise to the top. Probably needs to be shaken before use.

I am using a gun cleaning solution called Ed's red that is a mix of ATF, Acetone, Kerosene and mineral spirits. I have not seen any signs of it separating. I had to look up the materials in it and saw some posts that were taking about separation so it is not unheard of. I will have to make sure to shake mine before I use it incase I ma missing something.

Lacquer thinner isn't quite as harsh. Try it over the acetone.
I don't think it will separate.

Doesn't evaporate as fast as acetone either. I've had acetone evaporate from cans closed with plastic snap on lids.
