Title: Got knives on the brain!
Post by: yrone on May 15, 2009, 05:37:04 PM
Hey everyone! A recent knife thread has made me crazy and now Im obsessing over a new knife. Not that I'll be able to afford one of any quality any time soon. This leads me to the "point" of the thread  ;D

Since I cant afford one of these - (http://www.benchmade.com/images/products/model_main/211.jpg) (http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=211)

I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with http://knifekits.com (http://knifekits.com) they are very reasonable and its a very professional looking website.

I've bought lots of stuff from them.  Mostly kydex sheath making supplies & I've always had good luck with them.  I've never experienced any problems with anything I've purchased.

However, I've never purchased any of their knife blanks.  I've seen a few knives that others have built from them on another forum & they seemed satisfied.  They are a reputable company, but I can't speak to the quality of their blade blanks.

Here are some of the ones that I'm daydreaming about. I'll start with the most expensive:

A custom job from Bison Bushcraft (http://www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk/page10/page10.html) for around $300, + a one year waiting list.

The next, from Dozier Knives (http://www.dozierknives.com/) around $250 (or more depending on handle material)+ a one year to 16 month wait.

And, getting more into my price range, a Nessmuk, by CT fisher (http://www.ctfischerknives.com/nessmuk_style.htm) for around $120 (not sure on the wait time)

Finally a Marble's Woodcraft (http://www.marblesoutdoors.com/cutlery/woodcraft.html)  for around $80

Not sure which one to go with first, probably one of the lesser expensive ones and then put one of the other ones on order.

That soounds like a good plan.  In a related note, I just unearthed an old Marble's knife while cleaning out my Wife's Grandpa's shop.  It's got to be 40yrs old (not seen the light of day in 20!) and it's still sharp enough to shave with.  It's goin' huntin' with me this fall!

Good luck!

Yeah, probably definitely gonna have to wait on the custom ones. I just put one of these custom axes on order.

I don't think I could justify to the better half a $300 knife while I've got a $200 axe on order.  ;D
I'm trying to think out a way though, any advice?

That's easy!  Just go out and tell her you just ordered a $34,000.00 Ford truck, then after she's done throwing things at you, tell her you were just kidding, that you had only ordered $500.00 worth of razor sharp survival steel!

It can't fail!!!!   ;D
